rdv Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Is Ipad an option for tablet computer navigation in Canada? If not, what should I be looking for? I'm mostly interested in moving map capabilities. Ryan Quote
drapo Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 It's now the "Talk of the town" around here.... Foreflight Pro, in it's latest release, is now including Canadian approach plates. It already had airport info and IFR and VFR maps for the southern part of Québec, we can now have the approach plates, which makes the $150/yr price a bargain... Quote
danb35 Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 Another option would be the Jeppesen app, which now includes enroute data. It's pricey, of course, being Jepp, but you should be able to get coverage of anywhere in the world. Quote
skyking Posted August 1, 2011 Report Posted August 1, 2011 I have the new Garmin Aera 510 and i love it. Moving map, terrain, weather etc all in one device. Quote
jetdriven Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 Our aera has all the canadian data plus approaches (not legal for primary), and the iPad with Foreflight had the canadian data as well. But many of the waypoints were a few miles off, for example the VOR we were navigating to, the Foreflight spot the unit was navigating to didnt match the map. We also had the Jepp enroute charts and the Canadian pilot, so we had all the data for sure. Quote
BorealOne Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 hey folks - Foreflight is great - but it doesn't really have Canadian IFR enroute or VFR sectional coverage other than in southern Ontario and Quebec where those sectionals overlap with the US ones. Weather and other features work fine. I'm now experimenting with the new Jepp product, which has full coverages. Quote
Becca Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 So, Foreflight JUST (i mean, JUST) introduced Canadian charts this month. The charts weren't available when we left for Osh in the middle of July and by the time we left Canada they were available. There's details here: http://www.foreflight.com/canada. The guy at the Osh foreflight booth said soon there will be a separate subscription service for them. The reason the charts Byron said we were looking at were slightly out of alignment is that they were the US charts, which overlap with the southern half of Canada. There is a big warning when you read AOPA's guide to flying that the US chart segments of Canada have historically been fairly error prone. Quote
jetdriven Posted August 3, 2011 Report Posted August 3, 2011 It appears YXI is now in alignment with the charts. But you can't enter the airway to make it do the flight plan right. And you cannot file an ICAO (canadian or international) flight plan with it. But Foreflight is a nice product for supplementary info. Quote
