I am having the GTN 650 installed with two G5's.

I notice in all the images I see online that the active waypoint is not displayed when in map mode unless it is zoomed way out. 

Is there anyway to have the point being navigated to be displayed on the G5 units or on the GTN650 screen when zoomed in to see other features?

It does not make sense to not be able to see where you are going.

 

I know there is a nav screen on the GTN where you can see this stuff, but can you see the points on the map page without being zoomed way out?

OK, thank you,  

I woud want DTK, TRK, ETE, and then I guess the name of the point. and Distance.,,,,need more fields.  Is there a way to get rid of the transponder view and put one of these there?

If you need more fields, you can interface an aera510 and get 4 more or a 660 and get 8 more. That is what I’ve done with gtn/G5s setup, as I’m in process of replacing at 510 with a 660.  Also I will leave the 660 zoomed in with compass arc or synthetic vision and the gtn zoomed out.

Personally, I don't leave it in map mode. I much prefer the data on the Default Nav page. That's the way to navigate and fly approaches IMO. Use an iPad or something else for the big picture moving map.

My whole right side is dedicated to an iPad with a nice mount. 

It would be nice to have the GTN display the traffic page with several bits of nav info. 

Any word if the G5 united will have waypoint names in the future. 

The aspens can do it.

The GTN Default Nav page provides critical or important info you won't get on any other page; specifically the details about the current approach leg. For example on a missed approach, the first segment may be a heading only to intercept a radial. (Older GNS navigators didn't even have heading only segments). So IMO, I use another device to display a MAP and traffic - such as the GTN750 or an ipad or the MFD on the G500 etc. When not monitoring changes in flight plan segments, i find the TRK and DTK critical information and keep them in my scan. 

G5 is tapped out real estate wise so I really doubt it, plus it doesn't have the ports to get that info. What it does is incredible for the $, but its never going to replace the functionality of true glass panel display like the Aspen or G500.  I am working with with one instrument student now that has a pair of G5's coupled to the GNS430W and the G5's are an awesome improvement over the gyro attitude and HSI that they replaced. Its important though to have a magnetometer for the HSI unit though. At the pricepoint the G5's sell for, I think they'll compete very well with the current Aspens. A pair of G5's don't do nearly as much as a single Aspen but then a loss of airdata won't fail them entirely like the Aspen. Similarly, I can't see Garmin building much more into the G5's if they want to keep their G500 line viable.

My personal advice would be to put an iPad mini on the yoke for your map display with traffic as well as the approach plate when needed. if you have the FS510 as well, you're well set up to integrate the iPad and GTN. If yours is on the right side, it doesn't sound very easy to manipulate when desired - but maybe its just a dedicated map page overlayed with traffic and weather.

Thank you for all that info.  In my C room is limited and even though it is on the right side it is still basically in front of me.  I plan on using the 9.7 inch iPad Pro with foreflight on a nice mount that can be either flat against the panel or pulled out towards me quite a bit on an angle.  MygoFlight has many options.  

Very annoying that after spending tons and I mean TONS of money you cannot have the name of the waypoint you are navigating to on a panel mount device in map mode unless you are zoomed out to the point that the map is useless.

I here you, but just leave one off the field. I'd drop TRK and use your waypoint Fix instead. IFR you'll actually really dig the Nav page vs. the map page. The 650 screen is just too small and there is too much data on the map to make sense of anything. It really doesn't matter IFR. It's nice for SA, but that's what the IPad is for.

Traffic and Nav are about the only 2 650 screens I use.  

Enjoy the new box! They are really neat!!

I asked Trek if they can give us 2 data fields per corner like the Aera 660. Maybe if a few more asked they would do it  I mean seriously a 17k box and it has only 4 default data fields and it requires an iPad for situational awareness? That’s not good. I do have the Aera 660 and that’s a great unit. It’s almost like having a second GTN. But it has a couple features the GTN costs major to have, terrain/obstacle alerts, approach plates that display Even when expired, the 8 data fields and,   display from the remote AHRS.

Since you are getting a GTN650 AND two G5's...

If I'm not mistaken, the G5 that acts as your HSI will display groundspeed in the lower left corner and distance to the next waypoint in the upper left corner.  Your HSI will also have a current ground track indicator.  Just center the CDI, and turn until the current ground track indicator lines up with the CDI and you'll be tracking the course.  And if you look at your GTN map, if the aircraft trend vector lines up with the magenta line you will be tracking the course.  Your ADI will also show groundspeed and ground track.

That leaves 4 user selectable fields on the GTN650.  You could put next waypoint (ACTV WPT) in the upper left corner and ETE to next waypoint in the bottom left.  That still leaves the two on the right.  Personally, I like having distance to destination in the bottom right, however, putting it in the upper right corner will give you more choices for that last data field in the bottom right corner.  I use distance to destination to determine when to start my descent (5 or 6 miles for every 1000' to lose depending on my planned speed in the descent).  That STILL leaves the lower right indication.

For the bottom right field you might choose:

ETA to you destination, however, I don't especially care for that because it will only be accurate if my groundspeed never changes.

TIME if you don't have a clock in the cockpit.

FLIGHT PLAN so you can get to the flightplan page with one touch.

NEAREST AIRPORT page so you can get to that page in a hurry if you need to land right now.

CHECKLIST.  If you have set up checklists in your GTN you could quickly get to normal or emergency checklists.

Owning a 650 along with the Aspens, I found that everything I needed was being ported over to the Aspens and the GTN was relegated to the "entry" device. I set up the screens on the GTN to use the fields to quickly access things I normally use, i.e. the approach button, VCALC and the flight plan. Yeah, I know, some of these are two button pushes away, I just like having quick access to them. 

The Aspens provide all of the nav information to the current waypoint and shows the next waypoint in the sequence. If I need to know the timing to the second waypoint, I can go back to the flight plan on the GTN for it. This new technology sure beats the old stuff.

I try to focus most of my attention on what’s in front of me.— Happens to be the G500.  The GTN750s and iPad are for auxiliary data & as Marauder states, for data entry.

It’s all right there in view: bearing, track, next waypoint, terrain, traffic, nearby airports, the FAR 91.205 clock, and even that nasty 45 knot headwind factor.

But he doesn't have a G500, he has two G5's.  One as an ADI and one as an HSI.  What he gets is different than what you get.
