PMcClure Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 Weather, check. Plane, check. Mission, check. So why am I driving 12 hours to Baylor for a college visit? Because momma wants to show him how far Baylor really is from home in real time instead of mooney time. That's how I ended up in the back seat looking up. Parenting is cruel and unusual punishment indeed! 5 Quote
takair Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 I feel your pain. I recently refused to go for a 2 hour drive for a college visit because mom and the boy didn't want to fly there. Same scenario...blue sky's and convenient airport. Cruel and unusual punishment indeed! 1 Quote
gsxrpilot Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 You should have suggested they go on ahead. You'll be waiting for them when they pull in after a short flight to Waco in the Mooney. That way you get to stay home an extra day and get things done around the house, etc, etc, etc. ;-) 4 Quote
TWinter Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 When people talk about taking a vacation or trip I automatically calculate in Mooney time and not driving time..We've all gotten spoiled and soft..Anything longer than an hour and half drive is too long and I'm already thinking nope..not going unless there is a convenient airport nearby. -Tom 4 Quote

If the kid is smart enough to go to Baylor, he can do the simple math to figure out how far away it is for any given speed....maybe he wants to be far away 7 Quote

Bravoman Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 I could never do a 12 hour drive. In may we had a non stop flight from Rome back to Atlanta which was almost that long. I can't sleep on a plane, so it was shear brutality for me. At least when you're the pilot you stay busy and are having fun so the time goes by quickly. Quote
Marauder Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 Look at the bright side. You'll have a destination you can fly to for the next 4 years. My kids both went to the University of Delaware. 15 minutes by car. No flying for me 2 Quote

Multiple crossings of Atlantic and Pacific, I sleep good then. Short flights, like ATL to Connecticut, I still manage a nap of at least 30 minutes depending on seatmates and timing of the drink cart. But then again, I grew up in the backseat, riding several hundred miles up and down the interstates. Sleeping is the best way to make long trips! 1 Quote
TWinter Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 I was reading through the replies on this and then thought about my brother. He and his family live in Orlando, but his middle son is a freshman at University of Hawaii. What a visit by Mooney that would be... 28 hrs, 4036 miles, 330 gal.. accordingto FF. lol.. His oldest is son attends Auburn, a little closer.. I now am hearing the Hawaii son is getting homesick, so University of Florida is looking like a transfer possibility next year. -Tom 2 Quote
Gone Posted November 14, 2016 Report Posted November 14, 2016 I don't get it. When I left home at 18, all I had was a bus ticket, a scholarship and a suitcase. That was it!!! When my youngest decided to go to college, my girl had us rent a freaking van to schlep all his stuff to his dorm!! We drove him the four hours to his residence and then gave him a credit card to buy groceries (he had already paid his tuition and housing fees himself). What have we done???? No wonder the world is full of Gen X'rs and Millenials who have such a high sense of entitlement. We did this. 5 Quote

I did the actual flight plan today and it was 3 hours 4 minutes vs a 11.5 hour drive each way. What took 4 days could have easily have been done in 2. Our little planes sure are amazing. 1 Quote

We have another project coming up this summer. We will end up going to the old bar on DE campus. I like the airport. I got a ticket the week they outlawed talking on a cell phone though. The cop was a jerk. I had a rental car, Ohio drivers license and did do anything wrong (I was under the speed limit by a couple of mph - which really is rare.) He handed me the ticket and I told him "you have to be kidding me". How in the world would I have known they just passed this law. There weren't any signs or anything. Quote
