Oscar Avalle Posted September 26, 2016 Report Posted September 26, 2016 it seems that I will need to get a new prop... So I am looking for a replacement for my three blade McCauley. Any suggestions, ideas? Considering what it may cost me.. I would like to get something efficient and effective... (are those the right words???)...Changing from three to two blades will be most likely expensive? So let's open a discussion... I am all ears! Quote
Oscar Avalle Posted September 26, 2016 Author Report Posted September 26, 2016 one additional question: What does it take to change from a three blade to a two blade? Quote
Hank Posted September 26, 2016 Report Posted September 26, 2016 Since our planes were originally certified with a 2-blade, it shouldn't take anything but a new prop and a glance at the markings on the tach. These may or may not need to be changed, depending if they changed when the 3-blade was put on. The Top Prop may have different markings anyway. The CG will also shift slightly to the rear. But I like my 3- blade, she looks good parked and climbs really well, and even though it's supposed to be slow, I still true out at over 140 knots. Quote
Bob_Belville Posted September 26, 2016 Report Posted September 26, 2016 Plus 1 for the Scimitar. (Hartzell top Prop - 2 blade) 1 Quote
carusoam Posted September 26, 2016 Report Posted September 26, 2016 Go Hartzell! Expect... 1) one blade per 100hp... approximately 2 blades for the C. As hank points out, If T/O and climb rate is primary, go three blade. If cruise speed is primary go with two. 2) The new prop should eliminate the AD. 3) the new prop should take out the yellow arcs at TP speeds. 4) the scimitar blades look really modern. 5) Verify the diameter of the spinner is the same as on your plane now. Too small looks like a mis-fit. Too large will look goofy. Mine is off by a 1/4". Tough to get used to. 6) the TopProp people are great to have discussions with. 7) Consider composite blades if available. 8) there were three blade design to consider when I got my top prop. Beefy thick, lightweight thin, and ultra light weight composite. 9) Contact MT directly they have an office in Florida. They were easy to have discussions with regarding the STC and its coverage. I was looking into the four blade composite that they had for the Bravo already. Just the STC hadn't expanded yet. It took a few more months than I was willing to wait. 10) climb rate with the 310HP and a four blade MT would be greater than 2000FPM. Would be looking forward to cold days just for the stronger grab the prop would have with each turn. Happy prop hunting! Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
Piloto Posted September 26, 2016 Report Posted September 26, 2016 I would definitely go with two blades. Taking in and out the cowling by yourself with three blades is a PIA. José 1 Quote
