gsxrpilot Posted December 2, 2015 Report Posted December 2, 2015 iPad Mini w/Retina display, Landscape position in the yoke, is the hot set up for me. It's never in the way, easy to see, use, etc. On long flights with sun streaming in and heating everything in the cockpit, a small white hand towel draped over the iPad keeps it cool and functional. 1 Quote

How does the full-sized iPad fit between the yoke horns better in the "landscape mode"? I prefer the landscape mode in foreflight when displaying the AHRS/AI screen but haven't had that work out for me on the yoke. And I also like the iPhone mounted near the panel (mine's on the center post just below the vertical card compass) but sadly I can't display the "synthetic vision" screen on an iPhone like you can on an iPad. On my last trip into Colorado I really liked having the SV display which I mounted on the right-seat yoke (iPad mini) turned towards me. A retina mini on the yoke like GSXR's setup looks pretty good but requires me to pull out the reading glasses just a little more often. Hell I'd put one of the new iPad Pro's on the yoke it I could find room for the 12.9" screen. Quote

cnoe Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 As requested I'm posting a few pics of the ipad air and mini for reference. I mount the air with a medium length arm "under" the yoke to avoid blocking the panel view. The mini has a short arm "over" the yoke making it easier to get in and out of the plane (no blockage issue on right). Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Hector Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 I wish I could use SV for Foreflight on my iphone. I don't want to sacrifice screen real state in my mini when looking at an approach plate. But would like to be able to have SV as well. Anyone found a solution for this short of two iPads? Quote
cnoe Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 I'm with you; I'd love to have Foreflight w/ SV on my phone. The 6Plus is almost as big as the mini but doesn't have it. You can still get the backup AI/AHRS using the Stratus app but without ground reference. I've suggested to Foreflight that they cut the SV display to only 1/3 screen on the ipad (in portrait view) as that would help a lot but so far that's not an option. If enough people ask for it perhaps they'd offer that option. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
LANCECASPER Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 Garmin Pilot has SV on the iPad or iPhone and probably Android phones too 1 Quote
bradp Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 Send an email to foreflight if you want SV turned on. They listen to user requests if they are popular enough and practical/feasible from from their business perspective. Here's an email I sent last week. I've been a foreflight user for a while now (2012 I think) and had three features in mind. I'm sure this is a popular one, but please consider enabling synthetic vision on the iPhones (or perhaps limited to certain models of iPhones). I have a iPhone 6+, which I consider to be closer to an iPad mini than a iPhone 4/5/6. It would be a perfect setup for SV. Even if it was limited to full screen (i.e. No split window capability with maps), it would still be incredibly useful. Second, please consider allowing full charts in the plate viewer to be split screen with SV rather than having to view maps on a chart split with SV. I currently put the opacity to full opaque to be able to brief a chart on maps on a chart if I still want SV turned on. Then I go back and redial some transparency for the map. It would save some steps to be able to view a split window with the plate viewer. In fact, it seems not that far a jump to be able to incorporate a split view (ala wingX) from where you are now with SV/Maps split. You would probably gain some additional popularity with the WingX users if this were available. Finally, it would be great for general aviation pilots to be able to filter out PIREPS based on altitude. I more often than not see PIREPS for airliners in the flight levels when all I'm interested in is those below a set altitude (10k, 12.5k, the service ceiling of my airplane , etc). It seems like the ability to do this wouldn't be too difficult as winds aloft can currently be filtered by altitude. Thanks 2 Quote

One full-size iPad Only semi tongue-in-cheek. I'm planing on trying a mini for the first time this week (borrowing from a friend) although I have been very happy with my full-size iPad in the cockpit for the past ~5 years. Quote

If you're not carrying two ipads then I assume you're still carrying paper charts and approach plates as a backup? Backup iPads are cheap. I just sold a pristine iPad mini 1st generation on Ebay last night for $180. It also made a great independent SV display device. Quote
KSMooniac Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 and I just purchased an Android 7" Nexus tablet with 16gb of memory for $120 for my backup device. For now I've just loaded fltplan.com GO app, but might add Garmin Pilot as well. I'm using GP on my iPad Mini w/Retina for my primary chart/map/ADS-B display for now. Nice to have so many options these days! Quote

Unfortunately Foreflight on the iPhone will not do SV. I have another iPad mini but mounting two iPads in the cockpit would be a hassle. 1 Quote
cnoe Posted December 8, 2015 Report Posted December 8, 2015 We likely need to start a campaign urging Foreflight to support SV on iPhones. They're usually quite responsive and the number of cool updates they continually release is impressive. I'll try to start a poll in the morning when I'm at the computer and if the results are favorable I'll pass them on to Foreflight. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

Don't know of any technical reasons it could not be done. The processor in my iPhone 6 is at least as good as the one in my mini 2. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

Raptor05121 Posted December 9, 2015 Author Report Posted December 9, 2015 My stuff came in. 9.7" Samsung Tab A (white) running Avare Free. Plan on building a Stratux dual-band ADS-B in receiver (parts on the way). Running the RAM Tab-Tite system and 6" arm on a suction cup. I was hoping to suction cup this to the pilots side window and have it bent down, but this is the only good posiiton I can find for the suction cup. I'm going to order the yoke mount and try that. Holding it there, it doesn't block nearly as much and I think it might be better. Quote
