I know (I think) we have a French Mooney here that posted video or photos of landing in the Alps. Yes, that is what it is. It is based in Zurich (LSZH). It's a 1965 M20C, so 50 years old. It had a massive panel upgrade this year, see the picture attached. Here's a couple of pics from flying in the alps. The airport pictured is Samedan (LSZS) one of the highest regular airports in Europe. 5 Quote

RobertGary1 Posted November 20, 2015 Report Posted November 20, 2015 At gross taking off in a hot/high day it will climb but be aware your initial climb pitch will be nearly flat. Pitch for climb speed never pitch for attitude in piston planes at high DA. Once you get 500 feet or so agl climb rate always increases in these conditions. I have suspicions why but it's been something I've seen consistently in my nearly 20 years of flying the family around in the F in such conditions. -Robert 1 Quote
Glenn Posted November 20, 2015 Report Posted November 20, 2015 An F climbs at higher Vy and lower pitch attitude than the Cherokees that many of us transitioned from. I believe it has to do with the laminar flow wing. Use ground effect to accelerate then gently pitch up to Vx or Vy. When flown as designed the F will give surprisingly good climb performance. 2 Quote
Marauder Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 Since we are talking Fs, what are the normal true speeds you see? It was in the low 50s on the surface and around 40° at altitude here today and I did a flight at 4,500 over to Maryland to see my daughter. I normally flight plan for 150 KTAS but in cooler weather can see speeds in the mid 150s. This flight was made at 23.5 MP and 2500 RPMs. On hotter summer days, I am in the 149 to 152 range fairly consistently. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Shadrach Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 I was up today in central MD. I don't have the fancy instrumentation that you do. But at 2500' THE ASI showed 156KIAS WOTRAO 2500rpm 35LOP. Quote
