markejackson02 Posted August 30, 2015 Report Posted August 30, 2015 I need to remove three 40 year old servos to send to Brittain for overhaul. Is it okay to fly without the servos in place? I read somewhere that you should definitely not cap the vacuum lines to the servos after they are removed. Otherwise will wait until the airplane is down for annual to remove them. Thx Mark Jackson N201TK
Hank Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Check Brittain's turn around time. They did one aileron servo for me and I had it back in about a week. Didn't try to fly, it was winter in WV, which is either CAVU or low IMC with icing.
carusoam Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 You probably want an official response to your question... The source of the vacuum and what else is attached may be important to know. If the source is the vacuum pump, this could effect the other vacuum instruments. The parts manual has drawings of the vacuum system. The POH should/may have them. I am only a PP, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a-
Guest Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 I would suggest that capping the lines would make the most sense, the servo at the end of the vacuum line really a cap, unless it's leaking. Clarence
Yetti Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 do you want to suck dirt through your vacuum lines?

Clarence I would agree with Clarence, otherwise you are pulling in unfiltered air into your vacuum system.
Alan Fox Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Pull the small line off of the yoke switch that goes to the main valve and the system will be Idle... 1
geoffb Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Brittain keeps servos on the shelf for exchange. They don't even hit you for the core charge as long as you return yours within 30 days. So why deal with downtime?
Mooneymite Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 I suspect the good folks at Brittain could answer your question with a fair amount of authority.
markejackson02 Posted September 6, 2015 Author Report Posted September 6, 2015 I removed all four servos. They will go back to Brittain for overhaul/exchange. The servo in the left wing had a broken vacuum line. Now I need to figure out if I can fix the end of the line or need to pull new vacuum line. Thanks for the suggestion about disabling the system. Hadn't even occurred to me.
