golfpilot Posted July 29, 2015 Report Posted July 29, 2015 just curious, what does this do that an Ipad with a gdl39 doesn't? Quote
LANCECASPER Posted July 30, 2015 Author Report Posted July 30, 2015 I am an Apple fanboy if there ever was one. I bought my first Mac in 1984. I like my iPad and I have a subscription to Garmin Pilot, but living in TX I have had my iPad overheat on me a couple times in the cockpit. I have had to wait for it to cool down and then restart. Although the screen on the iPad is great for a lot of things it is not bright enough for me at full brightness during the day in an airplane. I already own a 796 and have it mounted in the airplane. I intend on keeping it - it's rugged and made for the cockpit environment. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 +1 for industrial strength of the Garmin portable. My LCD based Garmin is over a decade old and has WAAS accuracy and uses AA batteries. My iPad 1 became outdated after a few years followed by being unsupported... Good to have both if you can... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
Txbyker Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 Ditto on the iPad heat issue. I had a 796 in the J and the XM weather and maps were great as was the music through the ships audio. 1 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted July 30, 2015 Report Posted July 30, 2015 I have a 696 and love it even though I have a GTN 750. It is hard wired in and comes on with the avionics master. I gets flight plans and changes from the 750. I pull up destination info and approach plate on the 696 and have it set on map. It delvers XM music that auto mutes. I really like not having to fuss with hand held devices in the air. I have a scratch pad and pen to scribble down clearances long enough to get them in the 750/xponder. Quote
