Again, another looney here. Just upgrading my 1978 M20J. Installed Monroy long range tanks (now 10.5 hors running LOP with 104 usable gallons), and the avionics will be from original M20J panel to G500 w/SVT, GTN650, G255, trashing Century IIB in exchange for Stec55X, new G330/ES transponder, insight 3 Engine monitor, G350 audio panel. Glad to know Im not the only one. Will post pics of panel next week, should get by friday... Still wondering if difference of $5000 for Stec55x over Stec30 is worth it, but what the heck.

Going from an Insight G3 to something like a JPI 930, or 900, or the EI equivalent would be just round off money in your overall project and would really clean up your panel real estate since you can loose all the legacy engine gauges.

Dear Hramirez8 ( I tried finding your name in your profile but no joy)

Have you considered the PMA450? I'm not going to make this a sales pitch at all but I wanted to get a reading if you looked at it before you made your GMA350 decision.

If you hadn't , id be grateful to give you the three major advantages the PMa450 brings to a panel.

Thanks for letting me chime in here, audio panels is the central nervous system of your aircraft and careful consideration might be a worth while investment.

Sincerely,

Mark -- two quick questions. One sales related, the other service (suspect you haven't lost your technical prowess).

Sales: Are there any advantages of upgrading from a 8000BT (2 years old) to the new unit? If so, are you running any trade-in deals now or in the near future?

Service: take a look at these YouTube videos. Can an audio panel cause either of these issues? Your buddies at Penn, now Agape, still haven't figured this one out. BTW: why would the "alternate intercom" message that used to be broadcast immediately, now sometimes broadcast a minute or so after power-up.

This video shows noise coming through the system after pressing the push to talk button. I think the Agape guys fixed this by addressing a grounding issue with one if the rear jack sets.

http://youtu.be/hKabGqaeu28

Can the intercom be involved with this problem? Only appears to be happening on the second radio.

Thanks for any feedback on these questions.

Welcome aboard...

Yes, spending 5k is worth it, when it is spent modifying a plane that you intend to keep forever....

Forever depends on who you are and where you are in your life....

Best regards,

Dear Maraurder, the first answer is the Annunciation's are secondary and thus, the configuration announcements will be delayed when "other" functions are being initiated. You'll notice that at time they will announce immediately upon power up and other times there is a delay. If this is distracting, you can turn off the power up Annunciations, call me Monday and I'll walk you through.

The second question the answer is probably not. I listened to the audio and it appears the front end of the radio is somehow being overdriven. You'll notice the AGC kicks in when the radio became active. There are no AGC circuits in our audio panel.

Finally, there are 3 major advantages the PMA450 has over the PMA8000 series

1) IntelliAudio - True Dimensional Sound

2) extremely easy to use, if you can read English, you probably won't ever open up the pilot guide more than once. The graphics display and soft-keys helps you easily configure the unit

3) advanced Bluetooth capabilities including caller ID, phone volume control and answering capability from the front panel.

There is actually a whole lot of capability that the 8000 does not have.

While we don't have a trade in program I'm pretty sure you'll have little trouble having your dealer offer a reasonable trade in, the 8000 is still our largest seller.

Hope this helps

Thanks Mark. It does. I will check it out with the folks at Agape (Penn) Avionics.

Dear Mark. The name is Humberto. (I will update my profile).

I had not considered the PMA450 and believe I still have time to change my mind. Will know tomorrow. Can you comment on main advantages vs GMA350? One of them is obviously BT tech which is not available in the G product.

Thanks!

Bob;

Thanks for your comments. I believe the G3 is TSOd so I could technically loose the old stuff. Thought I like to have it as redundant and easier to read- RPM-MP. My only concern at this point is if it will talk to the GTN and the 500 which I think it will assuming they did software upgrade. (A guy at the avionics shop told me he had experienced some trouble with an earlier version). Comments on this topic would be welcome.

btw: You have it very nice at your farm in NC. My sister lives in a farm near Farmville and I fly KPGV all the time. Enjoy!

God Morning Humberto:

One important capasbility is our IntelliAudio. Aviation Consumer just did an evaluation of the PMA450 and did a quick comparison of our IntelliAudio and GARMIN's GMA350 3D audio. You can read that by going to www.ps-engineering.com/docs/Aviation_Consumer_PMA450.pdf.

What they pointed out is that they found the 3D overwhelming. I believe this is because the passengers sound like they are coming from behind your head while the copilot is coming from your right ear. IntelliAudio places passengers and copilot in both ears, which is totally natural for pilots who have used intercoms before.

IntelliAudio allows the pilot to place Com 1 and Com 2 in 9 different positions. This allows the pilot not only to tailer the configuration that best suits the pilot but it also can be used as an aid for someone who has a partial hearing loss in one ear. You can read what Aviation Consumer felt about our implementation of True Dimensional sound.

The graphics display and 3-Soft key interface really makes the advanced functions easy to use. Just playing with the panel for a while will give the pilot a good under standing in how to use it. Compare our interface to learning the key strokes on the GMA350 that uses flashing Blue lights as an indication you are changing to something as simply changing how the music sources are routed, is not necessarily trivial.

There are two simulators on our web site www.ps-engineering.com/PMA450.shtml that you can download, one is for operational demonstrations and the other is for IntelliAudio demonstration that allows you to move the Coms around in a stereo headset connected to your computer.

I'd enjoy speaking with you if you would like to talk in more detail.

Thanks for your response and your interest.

Sincerely,

Mark Scheuer

Jajajaja... Always equipped... Also, The goal s not necessarily to fly all those hours in one leg, but to be safer (over water flying in case of necessary deviations due to weather), and to be able to go places where fuel is not available/ or reliable for the return trip.

Still don't have it back though, holidays got in the way.. Should be picking up tomorrow.

mark,

Thank you for your advice. I took you up on it and ordered PMA450 for my plane. after looking over all details it looked like a better prospect. Besides, if Im not happy I know who to reach!! hahaha...

Happy New year.

I have a 92 m20j missle conversion in 95. I also want to do this,. Who did it?

Robert;

My panel is being put together by Sarasota Avionics in Lantana. Garret is the Tech, seems to be a pretty detail oriented guy. I will be able to be more precise after I get the bird...

For my plane (start of this thread), Executive Autopilots in Sacramento, CA did most of my panel. Top Gun Aviation in Stockton, CA did the AOA indicator and CGR-30P (the latter during my most recent annual, which saved a bit of labor time).

Not to hijack this thread, but I really like my AOA.  I had it installed just after Phil's and Phil assisted me with my Calibration, since he had already done his.  You can land on a dime with it.

These panels look awesome! Although, I'm not sure you can retain your membership in the CB club Chris... lol!

That picture is a little dated, I have a new transponder installed and a few other things planned for later this year. Consider me a poster child for how to get yourself kicked out of the CB club.:)

Some mentioned how we get this crazy adiction to spending on new avionics and approval of our spouses using the community checkbook..., "But honey, the GDL-88 will make our flying much safer..it's much more accurate than what we have now and I will save $65 per month on my XM".  I always play the "safety card and we will save a few bucks". This usually this gets the okay, if not I do it anyway and hope she will get over it. A man once asked, your plane or your significant other? I said, "Do I have to decide right now, my Mooney was made in limited numbers, but on the other hand my easy going spouse is actually less upgrade and maintenance costs".. lol  :)
