Do you need his number flyboy? Obviously he doesn't understand how good government is for business? Maybe you can help him understand? Maybe he is brighter than me?

Maybe it's a Georgia thing. While my CPA handles my tax forms for me down here, my only interface to the State of Florida is a once a year Annual Report due to the Dept of Corporations, and that's a simple web page and a $150 fee. 

 

Almost forgot, my city also requires me to renew my business license once a year at $60.

You have a business, you charge customers what services cost plus a profit margin. If you can't pay then you can't have the services.

OK, Tifton General charges $5,000 for an operating room per hour and $1,200 a day for a bed (these are real numbers by the way), plus plus plus. Here comes little Timmy with a tummy ache that turns out to be appendicitis and the E/R doctor says "Young man, your appendix has to come out right away". At that time Timmy's daddy meets with the billing department and they tell him that the hospital charges will be approximately $25k, but it doesn't include the surgeon's fee ($6,000), the assistant surgeon ($3,000), surgical staff nurses or the anesthesiologist ($4,500). Then Timmy's daddy says "but I can't pay these outrageous amounts, I don't have the money or insurance, at which time the billing clerks shouts out "next!".

 

You think I'm being funny here but this is how it is Dave. Would Timmy's father go somewhere else where they may charge $500 less? What does Timmy's dad do in this case? Let little Timmy die?

My point in all this, and I'm sorry if you can't grasp it, is that a lot of hospitals - large and small - are not in a business that can sustain itself by the income (or lack of) that they generate. These are institution's that have tremendous overhead and a clientele that can't necessarily pay for the services provided.

 

What would be the result be if your airline charged $1,500 for each and every seat between Augusta and Atlanta? Of course there may be two or three people on the 50 seat aircraft, but how long would that route be in service may I ask? This is an apples to apples example.

No my airline does generate the income by the service provided. Airplanes and the staff to support, maintain, and operate them are expensive, as we aircraft owners all well know. Nevertheless there are small operators providing good service at a reasonable price. So in your apples to apples example ... You sort of proves my point. Unless of course you want to say the underprivileged don't get to fly, so we need the government to take over the airlines ...

 

 

My point was that the airline beancounters determined that each seat would need to generate $1,500 each to break even and make a small profit. That number is based upon the assumption that every seat would be filled at $1,500, but on a typical flight only two people would be able to afford it and board, resulting in a loss for each flight that requires the carrier to discontinue service to Augusta.

 

That's the same as the hospital beancounter determining that they need to fill every bed, every day at $1,200 a day or face shutting down. Which is exactly what is happening.

You are (in my view) 100% correct about people that elect to kill themselves by indulging in really bad habits.

 

However, you would have a hard time convincing me that a 22 year old woman has babies just to collect her $156 monthly welfare payment. If that were the case they would spit out dozens, not just 1 or two. I found this about the subject:

 

1. Poor women have more children because of the "financial incentives" of welfare benefits.

Repeated studies show no correlation between benefit levels and women's choice to have children.  States providing relatively higher benefits do not show higher birth rates among recipients.

In any case, welfare allowances are far too low to serve as any kind of "incentive": A mother on welfare can expect about $90 in additional AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) benefits if she has another child.

Furthermore, the real value of AFDC benefits, which do not rise with inflation, has fallen 37 percent during the last two decades (The Nation, 12/12/94). Birth rates among poor women have not dropped correspondingly.

The average family receiving AFDC has 1.9 children -- about the same as the national average.

Your A&P or airplane shop owner can't charge anyway near these prices despite having the lives of many more people in his or her hands at any one time.

Complications develop and the child ends up in the Neonatal ICU, (NICU), and a special pediatric physician attending. A week of that business, then mother goes home with child. The bill comes, for 80,000$ and the insurance company denies it.  Eighty grand, you say, WTF?  The insurance company denies it because, although the hospital is in network, and the NICU there is as well, the attending physician is not, and you didnt pre-authorize it,  therefore you pay. Now they didnt see this coming, and they dont have any way to shop and compare.  Turns out, in the Houston market, there is no combination of NICU and Neo Dr. in he entire city of TEN million.   not one.

A good friend of mine is a Neonatologist down here and he doesn't contract with health plans because he has no need to. He's a great guy and I'd like to think that he would be open to negotiation on his fees if needed, but it's one subject which I don't discuss with him.

Where did I say that fraud and abuse doesn't take place? What I tried to get across is that it's a myth that women on welfare keep spitting out babies so they can get a larger check each month, and that is clearly not the case.

 

 

The video brings out an interesting point. Under the Welfare Reform Act which Clinton signed and the Republican's wrote, welfare queens were supposed to be a thing of the past. What happened?

$80k? Maybe per week and if a kid makes it to the Nick-U, some come home quick, but most don't...so it's more like a quarter mil.

 

Now, about paying this money out of pocket? We may, but our immigrant neighbors from the south who join our huttled masses, don't. And of course we are aware of their excellent neonatal care.

 

Lastly, insurance is either or. Everyone will soon be taxed if they aren't insured (to the extent of burden).

 

NICU-NEO Doc's....... purely a function of malpractice insurance. In Maryland, half of our Obsetricians have quit. 

 

Why hasn't the ACA solved these issues?

And then I'd get another hundred bucks to pay for all of my other expenses like car insurance, cell phone and day care. Wait a minute - did I say cell phone?
