Cruiser Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 I predict a flood of used Garmin 530/430 GPS units for sale soon. Quote
rbridges Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 I hope that it's a sign that they're close to marketing it. Quote
KSMooniac Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Well, they've been having these weekly webinars for at least a year now...this is nothing new. I've read elsewhere that they are indeed in the finishing straight for the 540 and anticipate being able to deliver before or at OSH...which is fast approaching! Garmin's release of their new Flight Stream product (announced yesterday) might be enough to cause folks to think twice about upgrading IMO. A 1 AMU box that allows you to enter flight plan data on a tablet and then sync TO the GNS box is a very nice feature that might extend the useful live of these things. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out, and what else gets announced next week. I'm still hoping for regulation relaxation to give us more/cheaper options for PFDs and ADS-B tech in the panel. I think Aspen is overdue on delivering some ADS-B tech and more connected panel stuff. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk I bet! I'm anxious but you've got to be far more so after "investing" so much in your panel. I'm still waiting to see if I can put a 4 AMU Dynon or G3 in my panel before dropping 10+ AMU into a single Aspen. 1 Quote
aviatoreb Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 I predict a flood of used Garmin 530/430 GPS units for sale soon. I would happily buy one of those 430W if it were cheap enough as a second to single 430W. Quote
Marauder Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 I would happily buy one of those 430W if it were cheap enough as a second to single 430W. I think there will probably be a healthy secondary market for them. Everyone looking for their first GPS to people looking for replacement units will in the game. Danb Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 We need more plug and play options..the cost of installation is killing us..I just had. Bendix AOA installed without asking the installation price also somehow Lancaster avionics got involved..Im still in shock for a item that's marketed as easy to install...the service providers are just killing us! Have you ever worked on an aircraft? I've worked on a few and it appears to me that Al Mooney's first wife must have run off with an avionics technician. Not a single single other than maybe a Socata TB-20/21 have been designed with any sort of avionics access in mind. After a little while I threw in the towel and realized it's a lot easier to just stay at work and make real money than to try to save pennies working on my own airplane. Took me almost a month to get over a pinched nerve I got twisting to get my HSI out. Screw that. I tell my mechanic all the time he doesn't charge enough ;-) Anyone capable of being shocked by an aircraft maintenance bill should buy a boat or an RV for a hobby. The base charge for a Pilatus annual is about the same as G36.You want to know why? Look at the PC-12 access panels. Got to love them Swiss. Quote
PTK Posted July 25, 2014 Report Posted July 25, 2014 I predict a flood of used Garmin 530/430 GPS units for sale soon.I don't think so! Not with Flightstream and an iPad running Pilot! This is a game changer. It transforms your panel to a touchscreen for under $1000! Most people use an iPad already. Plus you have the added flexibility outside the cockpit the iPad provides. People will choose to keep the proven GNS! Wisely so! Avidyne, like Aspen, is attempting to latch onto Garmin's success. It's interesting to watch the dynamics how Garmin shakes both of them off in one move! Quote

PTK Posted July 25, 2014 Report Posted July 25, 2014 Now...now Chris, we need to accept the inevitable truth...even if it hurts sometimes! I like the Avidyne IFD. I truly hope the company has the wherewithal to make it a success. I have my reservations based on their history but remain hopeful. It's encouraging that after a lot of hardship they finally did it! My hat off to Avidyne! This can teach Aspen a thing or two about building a "sandbox" of their own! 1 Quote
DaV8or Posted July 25, 2014 Report Posted July 25, 2014 If Avidyne wants to survive, they need to rethink their pricing. The MSRP is insane on these new boxes. That is not the way you inspire a customer to take a chance on a new and untested product. These should be priced under the Garmin boxes, not well over. Maybe it is just what they have to charge to dig themselves out of the R&D hole and it just is what it is. If that's the case, I sincerely wish them the best of luck, admire their effort and have my fingers crossed for them. 1 Quote
Awful_Charlie Posted July 26, 2014 Report Posted July 26, 2014 Other good news from the certification e-mail is that the 540 has Bluetooth and WiFi built in, so some exciting possibilities for handheld device integration should be on the horizon Quote
omega708 Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 IFD540 now certified! Did they give a timeline for the 440? Quote
KSMooniac Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 I think I read somewhere that the 440 would by "end of the year" but we've heard that before! Quote
1964-M20E Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 That is what Avidyne is saying and what I'm hoping I would be up for the 540 but my current panel does not fit the 540 and I do not want to dig that deep into the panel. Quote
devildog Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 I paid the $9,000 sale price on the IFD 540 two and a half years ago. My M-20-F had an anchient Apollo gps. I went ahead and had the local A&I shop here in Las Vegas remove the Apollo and go ahead and install the tray, antenna, GI106 indicator and wiring needed to make my new unit a simple slide in when I received it. That cost was $3,900 labor plus the $1600 for the used indicator. I finally got the call yesterday that my IFD 540 has been shipped. Eventhough it is supposed to be a simple slide in it had to be shipped to an avionics shop since that local Avidyne authorized shop will get a commission on the sale. I will post pictures when it is done. 2 Quote
carusoam Posted September 5, 2014 Report Posted September 5, 2014 Wow! That's a financial commitment. I can't wait to hear about the results. It's been a long time. Best regards, -a- Quote
