I remember reading a long discussion about this some time ago where an employee of the gas co. got involved.  IIRC he said they could have a 48"dia pipe with 1200 psi inside it, and when they let it go it was 'just subsonic', or 650 odd mph at the outlet. Doubtless one of our resident mathematicians can make an estimate as to high high that bump can go, but UK charts have many of them marked with an avoidance altitude, which sometime go up to 3500'
