Maybe its just me but why would you want to have smoke on a Mooney Undecided How is he going to advertise his biz, sky writing in a Mooney.... hmmmmmm... I think most people (esp non pilots) would think the something was wrong if they saw a Mooney laying a trail of smoke.... To each their own i guess..  Sorry im not trying to be a Di*k but I dont get it Wink

He wants to write the name of his business in the sky. His business name is RAZO, I dont know how he will accomplish this. Im not thrilled about writing in the sky, im just curious about how this will turn out. But he is really excited about this.  If anyone has done this in the past or have opinios i can pitch him please share your experience.

Ernest,

Interesting...

[1] I have seen this done by professional pilots with aerobatic planes.

[2] I have not seen this done with cross country speedsters before.  It would be a really large font......?

[3] You may consider pitching him the idea, that it may be best to hire this service from somebody with the proper equipment and experience.

Does anyone think this could be done safely (non-aerobatic flight) in a mooney?

One method for aircraft that are restricted to flying straight and level is the one demonstrated in this clip.

This one is the view from the cockpit:

and it shows the results as seen from the ground.  Computer controlled with some bandwidth between the installations on the participating aircraft.

When I was a kid there was a lot of sky writing. I watched it a lot. I don't remember seeing anything that would be considered aerobatics. More like precision flying. It mostly consisted of straight lines and level turns. I see no reason it could not be done in a Mooney. The text is laid out parallel to the ground not vertically.

My friend has been flying for over 50 years, but I dont think he has any acrobatic training. He wants to type horizontal lines and from what you can see from those youtube videos It can be done. I hope it looks good. The videos showing the different planes syncronized "printing" dots produce great results. I hope he can achieve the precision needed to look good.

Here is a link to an article in EAA's Sport Aviation magazine about how sky writing is done. I don't believe a Mooney is really suited for this task. Maybe the M20T if you can get it pried away from MAC!Laughing

Hi Anthony,

The Lycoming O or IO-360 (180 hp) engine produces a sufficient amount of smoke for single airplane sky writing however, the O or IO-540 or a big radial is recommended.  Factors involved in producing enough smoke with any engine are:

  • USING THE BEST SMOKE SYSTEM IN THE WORLD (www.smokingairplanes.com)
  • USING A HIGH QUALITY RECOMMENDED SMOKE OIL
  • PROPER ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS
  • FOLLOW THE SKY WRITING GUIDE LINES OF THE WRITER IN THE FEBRUARY, 2010, EAA ARTICLE MENTIONED IN THE MOONEY FORUM (link below)

Although I do not agree with the writer of the article regarding smoke systems (and I've spoken to him and the EAA regarding the inherent dangers of the water pump and other parts he recommended), I do believe he knows what he's talking about regarding sky writing.  I think the Mooney could do the job, just don't expect too much out of it.

To the guy how "didn't get why" someone would want smoke on a Mooney, he needs to think "VCAS," Visual Collision Avoidance System.  Smoking can save your life and/or the life of pilots around you!

I hope you find this information helpful.

Happy Smoking!

~John
