PTK Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 Question re the black rectangular piece below the engine controls and to the left of trim and flap position ind. The piece that my fuel flow and elt test are mounted in in the photo. Is it easily removable? Is it riveted or screwed in place. Anyone know? Also is it available? I'd like to mount another instrument in it next to the ff and would buy another one if available and easily removable.
John Pleisse Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 There is a screw on the left side. If you have FF and something else in there, I doubt you have much more room. This peice slides right out, like an ash tray in an old car. Your EDM takes up a lot of space behind it round face. What is it you want to put in?
PTK Posted March 8, 2014 Author Report Posted March 8, 2014 I have a Davtron M655 and wanted to move it there next to the ff computer. Primarily for DA but it's a nice multi function instrument. It would be great if that piece did slide out! However I don't see any screws to the left of that piece. A photo would be great if not too much trouble!
Cruiser Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 My '84 M20J had a similar looking panel that the headphone intercom box was mounted in. I removed it by disassembling the left side panel behind this panel along the pilot's right leg (to gain access from behind and underneath). Mine was riveted in place to the center console. It took a lot of twisting and cussing to get at all the mounting points and I ultimately ruined the panel removing it (but I was not planning on using it again).
Marauder Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 In my 75 F, there was an ash tray in that section of the quadrant. I removed it and had a solid cover installed.
Marauder Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 Pete - what is the wiring hanging down in the second photo?
OR75 Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 was your aircraft equipped with a Century IIB at some point ? the console is sometimes located there.
PTK Posted March 8, 2014 Author Report Posted March 8, 2014 Pete - what is the wiring hanging down in the second photo? Cris, that is the USB port to download data from EDM. I want to flush mount one in the panel but need to find the USB port. Any ideas where to find a female USB port to wire? was your aircraft equipped with a Century IIB at some point ? the console is sometimes located there. No OR75. But I know what you mean. I've seen some like that.

There are a bunch of options on Amazon: This one hangs below a flat surface: http://www.amazon.com/iSimple-IS43-Panel-Vehicle-Charging/dp/B0047XUDCQ/ref=sr_1_8/180-8241948-7060142?ie=UTF8&qid=1394323180&sr=8-8&keywords=usb+panel+mount+connector Mouser sells one like this: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Amphenol-PCD/USBF21BSCC/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMulM8LPOQ%252bykzAp4yt8IxVbubBreXpsMKc%3d This looks like the one you have, right?: http://www.l-com.com/usb-panel-mount-usb-cable-type-a-female-panel-mount-to-type-a-male-connector Can you get me a better picture of what you have? Also, can you get to the back of the JPI?
PTK Posted March 9, 2014 Author Report Posted March 9, 2014 Cris, thank you. I'll check those out. It's a female usb. The back of the EDM has the pin connectors. A pic wouldn't tell you much. The usb wiring is in one of the connectors. I've been looking for something that could possibly fit neatly in a rocker switch blank cover. Like the one above the prop control in the pic. Not a priority but you know how it is. Always thinking about something to do on the Mooney!
Marauder Posted March 9, 2014 Report Posted March 9, 2014 Pete - the best way would be to use a connector like this: http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/11/prweb10105908.htm You would need to take out the cover and cut an opening for the USB and attach it to the cover using the screw holes. It would also mean cutting the ends of the existing JPI wire and soldering the 4 USB wires to the connector making sure they are covered with shrink wrap (the wires are (-) D+ D- and the (+)). Should be a minor mod for a mechanic or avionics shop.
N601RX Posted March 9, 2014 Report Posted March 9, 2014 One of these will be easier to mount and have a more finished look. They will mount in a round hole. http://www.alliedelec.com/catalog/pf.aspx?fn=1278.pdf You can also go to Allied's website and search for panel mount USB connector for other options.

I'm not sure many will have a male connector on back of the panel mounted connector though.
N601RX Posted March 9, 2014 Report Posted March 9, 2014 I've used them quite a bit on test equipment that I have designed at work. They are available with a connector on the back or a molded in pigtail.
PTK Posted March 10, 2014 Author Report Posted March 10, 2014 I'm looking at this one. http://www.l-com.com/usb-usb-type-a-coupler-female-bulkhead-latching-male-12 I'm going to take some measurements of the switch blank and see how it fits. Looking for a nice finished look! It'd be awesome if it fit exactly wouldn't it!

kortopates Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 Have you simply considered trading in your 730 for the new 830 color display which also includes a USB plug on the display? Its 1 AMU and they were offering a $200 rebate check bringing it to $800. The 830 is much improved over your older 730 and could be mounted vertically next to your 730 now or horizontally likely using the hole of the 730. But I would flush mount it to the right vertically with their flush mount kit. Also while you're at it, I'd discard the Fuel Flow display mounted on your pedestal that is out of easy viewing range, and wire your fuel flow transducer into the 830. Then you'll have room for the Davitron - if you want. Just some thoughts on your quest to clean up your panel.
Piloto Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 I just went the simpler way on my M20J. This little panel is a pain removing it. And then if you are going to install something else with different foot print holes you need a new plastic panel. Here is what I did. 1. Remove the instruments on the plastic panel. This is already painful because you have to squezze your arm from the back into the panel to get access to the instruments. 2. Cut a square whole on the plastic panel that leaves about 1/4" of material at the edges for holding screws. 3. Cut a square piece of .025" aluminum sheet of the same dimensions as the entire plastic panel. 4. Drill four holes on the aluminum panel that are centered with the the supporting edges of the plastic panel. 5. Using the alumnum plate as a template drill four mounting holes on the plastic panel. 6. Attach four small nut plates for #8 or #6 screws using epoxy glue on the back of the pastic panel. Align and secure the nutplates with the screws an allow the glue to dry (one day). 7. Make the new instruments foot print holes on the aluminum panel. 8. Round the corners for a professional look and paint the panel. 9. Attach the new instruments to the aluminum panel 10. Attach the aluminum plate with the instruments back on the plastic panel with the screws. The new aluminum panel allows you to remove easily the installed instruments from the front. And if you are going to install different instruments in the future just make another aluminum plate. The above takes about an a hour to do. José

I've thought about it Kortopates, but I love my EDM800 and dedicated ff on the 450. Also 1 amu ≠ 1 amu! By the time you figure into it all details. I just went the simpler way on my M20J. I have thought of this Jose'. I thought that little piece could come out easily that's all.
