RJBrown Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 I hear a bunch of you here saying " Don't worry about REAL pilot skills just buy a new dash toy instead" Isn't that what crashed that Korean Air 777? Replacing true pilot skill with glass instruments will, in the long run, prove to be less safe. I kept the ADF going in both my planes just for training. You are current AND competent once you can shoot a partial panel approach with just a compass, an ADF and a turn coordinator. Don't kid yourself even if you never need to actually shoot such and approach for real the skills needed to do it will serve to make you a better pilot across the board. Adding new and better toys to the panel IS a great thing just don't scrimp on the most important piece of safety equipment in the plane, YOU. 1
John Pleisse Posted November 21, 2013 Report Posted November 21, 2013 What...you trying to make all the guys who put more $$$ into their panels so they won't get lost 4 or 5 times over, than some of them paid for their planes? Oh, the humanity Well, I did, Gary!!!! I spent a lot....no remorse, no regret, just wouldn't do it again........ I had no choice though...a crappy RC Allen AI and a 20 year old Century NSD on the fritz. If I had been King equipped, maybe I wouldn't have made the upgrade. Don't get me wrong...the Aspen stuff is great and glass can help (ex: broader, more exact pitch interpretation, which really dialed me in). Doesn't matter now....stuck with it and will not get my money back.

My mechanical AI seems to barely move off of the level pitch indication for a Vy climb. The Aspen moves a lot of real estate on the AI during a climb. I think it is easier to use because it does show greater movement than the mechanical one.
