  1. Do you have the stock windshield? If so, just get a lighted SIRS Compass and be done with it.
  2. Curious where most folks have their compass mounted. My lighted SIRS Navigator is at the top of the center post. Keep hitting my head on it when I get in the plane. Finally broke the mount. My heads interaction with the compass cost me another $500.
  3. Have you considered a SIRS? I think its a better compass and worth the extra $70. Mounting may be a challenge.
  4. Last I checked, every new Airbus and Boeing comes with a compass. Boeing uses Airpath, Airbus uses SIRS. And yes, every overwater flight plan includes "loss of nav" that includes a heading to fly with the compass. Your best friend when it all goes dark is a good heading.
  5. https://www.chiefaircraft.com/aircraft/flight-instruments/compass-repair-parts/ap-l4vt-housing.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIs5fpy-fl_QIV5MiUCR0HpgP-EAQYBCABEgLfTvD_BwE If I were you, I would just upgrade to a SIRS. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/sirs_compass2.php
  6. I love the SIRS unit. Standard equipment on Airbus. Real quality unit.
  7. In previous Mooney, the DG precession required frequent adjustment. The vertical card compass was great for that. The '83 J that we recently bought has a PFD (Aspen) with a magnetic sensor. I find that now I use the compass a lot less. Our J has an itty-bitty SIRS compass that works just fine, and isn't as imposing as a vertical card compass. My 2-cents: If you need a compass to keep your DG set, a vertical card compass is great. If you have a magnetometer connected to a PFD, you don't need much of a compass. In that case, the SIRS is more than sufficient. At almost twice the cost of an Airpath compass, not cheap. They are very good.
  8. I've considered upgrading our old Airpath compass to a new SIRS compass. It appears that at one point in time they made an adapter to mount to the vertical post, but that is no longer available. Can anyone share a picture of how you mounted it without the official adapter? Thanks!
  9. Thanks for all the recommendations,. I'll probably go with the SIRS since it seems easy to mount. I just need a compass to meet the requirement since I'll be upgrading the panel.
  10. I got tired of the cheap plastic mount breaking for the whiskey compass and replaced it with a dry vertical-card compass. It was easy to install and very easy to swing/correct. I was kind of torn between a SIRS and a dry and decided on the dry. It's been great and I think is less likely to get damaged by passengers/maintainers. The mount for the dry compass allows it to move around quite a bit. The vertical card seems to be easiest to read as well.
  11. Sorry to hear about the break-in. I had one of the SIRS compasses in my previous plane and was quite impressed. It was easy to read and much more stable than the typical whiskey compass. Lots of good options. Here is a link to the SIRS: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/sirs_compass2.php Also, there are a few PTT buttons that you just plug into existing Mic plug and strap onto the yoke. Simple option until you get yours fixed. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/pa50tt.php Bob
  12. Get a SIRS unit. Available at Spruce
  13. I need to replace my compass. I am thinking of going with SIRS. Does anyone have any pireps on SIRS? Russ
  14. Common solution for Airpath problems…. People like their Sirs(s) -a-
  15. Problem solved...just gonna get a new panel mounted SIRS and toss the old AirPath. Thanks All
  16. If you are going panel mount, get a panel mount SIRS unit and stop resealing inferior units.
  17. Problem is that SIRS doesn’t sell the Mooney mount anymore
  18. +1. The SIRS compass is the bomb. Much better unit, 4 compensating magnets, a brass rather than rubber diaphragm, silicon fluid. Standard equipment on Airbus. With 4 compensating magnets, it swings really fast and tight. When mine dies, it will be replaced with a SIRS unit.
  19. It's likely between age or vibration that a seal is wore out. They sell refurb kits for the old school compasses but be careful to to not screw down the case down too much or you'll crack the glass (which is $40 btw, ask me how I know....) BTW, what's a "standby compass"? Do you mean your primary (or only) magnetic compass or do you have two magnetic compasses in your aircraft? I ended up after much flailing with my old compass in which I replace the seals, fluid, glass, and mount -- installing "SIRS Compass" Bruce P.S. If you're anywhere near the SO CAL area and can get to L00 (Rosamond Skypark). I'll happily give you what I have in regards to the Airpath Compass if that's what you have. I may have the refurb kit, fluid and some parts still laying around.
  20. Sort of AOG… Kinda AOG… Dear sirs, please get this part for me so my flying doesn’t get delayed another couple of weeks… waiting for my mechanic to get back in town… If I get by Tuesday… the world will be a better place…. Its a flying emergency… almost… Comfortable enough that you are not stuck paying for a hotel bill 1kmi away…. Soooo…. It’s not exactly AOG… and that would be crying wolf…. But…. They do have a system in place that gets enabled by the letters AOG…. See if you can enable the system…. Without crying wolf… Sounds like the opportunity has gotten by already… as your mechanic has already headed out… and things are on hold until he gets back… PP thoughts about owner communication, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-
  21. My original compass has sprung a leak and I'm looking at replacing with a smaller SIRS unit. Anyone have any experience (good or bad) with these units in a Mooney?
  22. Nuke I hope this is one of the threads you looked at: https://mooneyspace.com/topic/36590-magnetic-compass-way-off/?tab=comments#comment-628292 It was my mounting bracket that was magnetized! I got my vertical card compass walked in finally, but it was much easier than before without that magnetized bracket. Still, if I get another failure I am going with the SIRS compass. The previous advice you received in this thread regarding that compass is well founded. Hope your PPL went well!
  23. A normal compass such as Airguide or the vertical compass has two magnets that adjust to compensate for deviation. The SIRS has 4 so you have to move each magnet less and the "loop" of deviation is smaller throughout the range. So when you swing it after installation, you cut the process in half. It also uses silicon fluid rather than alcohol so it dampens better. The diaphragm is made of brass, so it does not leak. Standard equipment in Airbus. When I installed one in my PA-18, I had it "dialed in" 5 minutes.
  24. I have a degaussing tool, I have used it on several mooney's including mine when I first got it. it does seem to make a difference on the wet compass but I'm not sure how often it needs to be done. I installed the SIRS compass in my Mooney and haven't had to degauss mine since, not sure if its because I changed out most of my old avionics or the SIRS is less affected. Brian
