  1. Some of us have an E. And the Challenger Air Filter. And the PFS tuned exhaust. And of course PowerBoost Ram Air. What do we win?
  2. Me too. David, probably asked and answered but I already have a Scimitar prop and spinner to go with the ARI cowl on a '66E. Will this spinner fit with your new cowl?
  3. My EDM 930 is "booted up" before the engine is started.
  4. I don't have a WX-500. I have a WX-900 that displays only on the StormScope screen. The traffic and weather from the GDL-88 display only on the GTN 750.
  5. Does "new line" include 3 year old GDL-88?
  6. Well, I have a tour scheduled for May 20, a Friday. I'm attending MooneyMax Maintenance Seminar in Longview that weekend and Jan Maxwell put me in contact with Luis Acosta who has arranged for Joe Schmerber to take us through, apparently on a non-standard day. Every contact I've ever had with Mooney folks has been friendly and helpful.
  7. Agreed. I've left the gear down when aborting a landing due to conflicting traffic taxiing into TO position just as I turned final.
  8. No, electric trim is probably slower. But I can push on yoke and hold trim buttons with left hand, freeing the right hand to raise flaps, gear, etc. I guess if I had to use the PTT instead of the Trim Switch I'd be cranking the manual trim wheel. A single pilot in our little planes can get busy at times. Aviate takes priority.
  9. I got to fly a few minutes with Mike Elliott at Mooney Summit last fall. A FR with a Mooney specific CFI. He called out a "go around" on short final (probably 100' AGL, <65 kts, full flaps, full up trim). I went full throttle while holding a lot of pressure on the yoke with my thumb running the electric trim forward. I never try to partially raise flaps (hydraulic) so with adequate AS I dumped flaps. That's when Mike got interested in what might happen next. When the trim caught up I swung the JBar and he was breathing normally again. I don't know any other way to transition from landing to TO configuration. I'm sure a more powerful engine might necessitate a more cautious transition but this is a 200 hp short body Mooney, not a P-47.
  10. How much experience did that pilot have? Hyperventilating(?) set in fast.
  11. Talk to the parts manager at LASAR. They acquired a lot of used Mooney parts inventory a couple of years ago. FWIW, your covers look just like mine - '66E - so I don't think you'll have to find something from exact make and model. I took everything down and painted it a few years ago. Not a big deal once you figure out how it's assembled.
  12. Yup. 158 KTAS @ 70% power is the best I've documented - see pic. Caveats: To whatever the accuracy of my ASI is which is used by the Aspen to calculate TAS. And that was not at 2575 MGW, probably closer to 2300#. OTOH, I could have gone to 2700 RPM which would have been close to 5% more power and might have gotten 2 kts. I've never done a sea level balls to the wall speed check. I have a lot of the thingies that help power and aerodynamics - RAM air, PFS tuned exhaust, ARI cowl (until David gives us his great looking cowl), 201 windshield, flap gap and other seals, retracting step... Have not replaced any antennae or enclosed wing tips. Chris, I sometimes rest my foot on the right rudder pedal to center ball at cruise. You might be able to detect a slight "ball" deflection in the pic. When I first bought the plane we worked on rudder trim and tweaked the ailerons. All said,
  13. Oh unfair. We're as anxious as you C owners are to get another 6 kts or more free speed. For my decrepit old E that would be about 164 kts.
  14. Ned, Manteo (KMQI) is closest to First Flight and a nice stop. Airport is convenient to town, in the past I've borrowed their crew car to go down to Wanchese for lunch. But long time MSer Amelia (Mimi Reiheld) is based at Edenton and is a treasure trove of local info. She'll probably comment but send her a PM if she doesn't have her ears on.
  15. Blake, you may know that Brandon is now flying Lears for a Hickory based company for his day job but whenever he's off he's flying/instructing/ferrying in Carbon Cubs, Mooneys, aerobatics, etc out of MRN, HKY.
  16. Hi Blake, check out both but I think you'll find MRN to have several advantages, particularly maintenance. Lynn Mace (AGL Aviation Services) works on a lot of Mooneys including mine and another 4 or 5 based here plus several who come to him from other fields. (He gives preference to planes based @ MRN so if you're going to have him do an annual or other work it would be to your advantage to park @ MRN. His web site includes his flat rate for annuals.) BTW, Lynn and i are going to attend MooneyMax, a maintenance workshop weekend next month. We'll be taking a side trip to tour the Mooney factory while we're in TX.) The FBO is Foothills Regional, the airport manager is Brent Brinkley. I think you'll find them very helpful. There should be room in the one of the large hangers at a monthly rate. There are pics and more info on the Website. http://www.aglaviation.com/ http://foothillsairport.com/ PM me if you have any questions and do let me know when you're coming and I'll meet you there! https://photos.flightaware.com/photos/retriever/20e42d2656b1836636695201dc271fe37ccb1d74 Gorgeous Ovation 2 Blake! Look forward to meeting you.

  18. An AircraftMoneyUnit = 1000USD
  19. Ms. Google found the answer to my question, Bryan!
  20. Does the C172 have a higher OP red line?
  21. In conjunction with the last annual on my E (IO 360A1A) I had the oil pressure adjustment spring changed to the next stronger spring. The intent was to move the OP up further into the green. the older spring was adjusted all the way in. The new setup achieved the desired results, cruise OP is in the 70s, comfortably in the green even with level below 6 qts and OT over 200F. I have a JPI EDM and I note that at startup OP exceeds 100 psi for 30-60 seconds. The highest I've seen is 107. By the time the OT gets to 140 and ready for T.O. OP is down to 90 or less. I can back off on the spring adjustment which might lower the cruise as well as the initial, idle, OP - but I wonder whether someone here would like to pontificate on how seriously I should take the "momentarily" red line plus pressure?
  22. I agree that you get upgrade an older panel to mostly glass with tremendous capability for a lot less than you've been told. I spent $50k installed for GTN 750, Aspen, JPI EDM 930, GLD 88, a new audio panel and transponder in a 50 year old M20E. It might not look like the Cirrus glass but I have GPSS weather and traffic and I'm 2020 compliant. I already had the STEC 50 autopilot and the Stormscope. I do not have pre-select for altitude or rate of climb/descent and I do not have SV but I could have if I thought it would be useful. Our point is that even a 10 year old plane did not come out of the factory with the panel you can retrofit to much older airframes.
  23. http://www.glapinc.com/cart/product_info.php?cPath=639_144_443_146&products_id=1270 Great Lakes has the appropriate approvals. 24. I think he intentionally landed in the grass. That's a busy interstate. It would be a shame to make a smooth landing and get run over by an eighteen wheeler.
