Most desirable year for an m20j ?
Bob_Belville replied to zerotact's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Quadrant vs. push/pull. Push/pull is generally favored for single engine. Quadrant in a single was an effort to mimic a twin, a DC3, or a Boeing 707. -
I have a 750 and an Aspen (single screen EFD 1000 Pro PFD). ISTM the much larger 750 screen is much better for weather and traffic and I do not expect to add that spftware. I'm sure a 2 screen Aspen installation, like Marauder has, would be fine.

Becca, that new paint job on that slick, fast airframe with the fresh engine deserves at least the 750/Aspen combo. With that a GDL88 gives you ADS-B i/o and puts traffic and weather right on that big 750 screen. The cost of installation argues against going with used avionics. And Byron could do most of the install to add the JPI 930 to clean up and centralize all those engine gauges. All this should be much easier to justify for 3 owners flying 200 plus hours per year than it was for me with my old E model - one owner flying 75-100 hours per year. What else are you going to do with that money? Waste it on food, clothes, and pensions?

Becca, assuming you have an autopilot and an EDM, for about 40AMU net of selling removed stuff you can have something like this: (I spent 50 including the new panel, GTN750, Aspen, JPI 930 and GDL 88. I already had the STEC50 and the Stormscope.)

Finally found a plane...'65 M20E
Bob_Belville replied to Pictreed's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Yes. In fact I think I could have put a 650 below the 750 and put the GMA340 audio panel where the KX155 is. I would have moved the gear alert and vacuum gauge to make room for the 750 up high. (The top part of the 750 is shallow and there should be enough room to move it up. The 650 is 1.35" taller than the GMA 340 now in that stack. And of course you can always utilize the 750's ability to use a remote xponder and a remote audio panel if necessary. But I still like what I did. The KX155 is a fine radio. I seldom use it except to listen to ATIS. And I like having the GMA340 and the GTX327 visible. -

I put a GTN 750 in a '66E. If I were to replace NavCom 2 with a GTN 650 I'd probably have to remote the audio panel or the xponder or both which the 750 supports. -
Putting in LASAR 201 Windshield

Not the best pic but all I could find. The blue fitting at the top of the pic is the fill for the hydraulic reservoir on the other side of the firewall. The overflow is copper tubing to the right. I top off the reservoir whenever I have the top cowl off. -
Seriously considering selling my E to buy a J
Bob_Belville replied to nels's topic in General Mooney Talk
That I have heard, and it makes sense that the "short coupled' models are tougher to keep on altitude. An autopilot with ALTHLD handles it fine. -
Hey Marauder, I'm thinking Aspen and/or Garmin ought to gift us a little something for our role in getting several former CBs to spring for their toys.
-
I didn't get the impression that Tom is getting a separate box for steering. Even with the GTN750 connected to the Aspen he still needs the STEC30 to execute fly the flight plan hands free.

Seriously considering selling my E to buy a J
Bob_Belville replied to nels's topic in General Mooney Talk
Interesting. Have you flown your E to Denver yet? it looks like a direct, no wind, flight would be easy enough with one stop, in either a E or a J, even with reasonable head wind. It's 947 nm from KLUK to KAPA. Tail wag? That a new one to me. But I only have 2500 hours in Es. But, your final reason is all you need and it is completely valid. Go for it. -
We'll be anxious for pics when yours is done. Maybe not as anxious as you...

Sounds like your panel will be a little more like mine than Chris'. Come over the hills anytime.

Seriously considering selling my E to buy a J
Bob_Belville replied to nels's topic in General Mooney Talk
Nels, I'm going to guess that an early J with a panel not much newer than yours will cost you 30-40,000 more than you'll get for your E. The leaking tank(s?) will be discounted about 10k based upon what a reseal costs these days. The 6200 TT will cost you value. The gear up, which should not be a factor, will be used by the buyer to negotiate. The engine likewise will cause the buyer to figure he needs to plan on a major overhaul before too long. The inop autopilot will turn off anyone who does not know that these "primitive" units are in fact pretty nice. (As has been suggested, this is the one item you should get fixed whether you keep or sell.) Your OP does not ask for advice re sell or keep. You only asked what your E could reasonably sell for. In spite of that, several of us are tempted to inquire re you mission. How often do you have more than 2 souls on board? What's your typical mission? How far? Do you fly hard IFR? It seems to this admitted fan of the M20E that the M20J has only a couple of advantages: more rear seat leg room being the first one usually cited, and speed. The speed advantage is quite small if the E has had any of the mods that became available after the 201 came out. (My '66E cruises @ close to 160 ktas (over 180 mph tas). The rear seat leg room could be very important or or no concern depending upon how often it is actually used. -
Tom, you'll love it all. I added the Aspen PRO to the STEC50 I already had. GPSS is wonderful. I added the JPI 930 at the same time - also very nice. Are you already ADS-B I/O to be 2020 ready?

No problem until something happens... AOPA should be a good resource for what to potential situations you need to provide in advance for. E/g/, you may need to do one 100 hour inspections if the are "renting" the plane. It might be different if the named pilot is just buying the gas. I'm not saying, I'm suggesting you want to know before the fact.

Plane based @ Fullerton - we were there to say hi to Mooney Girl Saturday.

I did much of my installation in my E myself, installing the sensor in the right wing symmetric with the pitot, I snaked the wires inside the wing. You'll need something stiff to use as a snake, particularly to go through that section in front of the fuel cells that does not have an access panel. You or your A&P should have no problem. You do not need to go to the avionics shop. I installed the display in the top of the panel in my prime field of vision between the Aspen and the BU ASI.

Mrs. Malaprop, spellcheck, senior moment... I'm assuming "stormscope".

yes, and that's electric

Finally found a plane...'65 M20E
Bob_Belville replied to Pictreed's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Yes, it was a small depression at the edge of a manhole cover in a paved ramp. Taxiing slowly away from the pumps the prop just ticked the pavement. I looked at Nancy "Did you hear that?" "Yes". The plane was stranded 900 miles from home for 4 months at the mercy of the only maintenance shop on the field. Prop was filed out but the engine tear down cost ~30 AMU, mostly the insurance company. I don't think it's so much the prop ground clearance, which is about as much as a C172, it is the short coupled gear and the readiness to bob. Be careful out there! -
Mooney Ambassadors Fullerton CA, May 7th!

A little further than we usually go for a fly in, but Nancy and I will probably come by. -

Mine was "just" 50 AMU installed for new panel, GTN 750, GDX 88, Aspen, JPI EDM 930, Garmin xponder, Garmin audio panel. (I had the Stec50, Stormscope, and kept the #2 nav/com.)
