  1. Dan, when I change to the SabreCowl the openings went from rectangle to round. I took the old plugs to a seamstress I know at church and she made me a new set matching my new paint scheme. She reused the N# and the strap and I had scrap foam but she got the fabric and did the sewing of the new plugs with zippers to insert the foam. Cost me about $20.
  2. I know I'm sounding like some kind of evangelist for the Surefly EI but so far the performance exceeds my high expectations. I have not been flying since my Aspen was off getting the MAX upgrade but it got installed Friday which involved a round trip to 8A7, about 40 minutes each way. 2 hot starts on the 8A7 ramp were great. I climbed to 8500 on the way back and pulled mixture back to LOP... little 4 banger ran smooth with all cyls 60+ LOP. (That was under 7 gph and speed slowed to perhaps 130-135 ktas so not where I'd cruise but it ran smooth.) I wish there was some way to see how far BTDC the EI was firing...
  3. Yes, works fast. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  4. Got my upgraded Aspen MAX back and installed today so we won't have to bum a ride to PCB with fellow Tarheels Rob and @Amelia! The good folks at Twin Lakes Avionics had to play the squeaky wheel role with Aspen but all good now.
  5. I like the give away blue plastic ones. For storage, I plug the ends and wrap it with a shop towel and carry it in my tool bag. There's a little trick - screw the funnel onto the jug and move with deliberate haste - to poring w/o spill but once you get the hang of it you can screw the funnel into the filler tube and leave it to drain.
  6. And we mean a real one, not the paper thingy. There's a discount deal for a couple of recommended sensors around here somewhere...
  7. @AGL Aviationhas replaced quite a few down lock blokes in the past few years including mine which came from LASAR. Perhaps they''ve found another supplier. It would be worth a call to @Pmaxwellto see what they are doing now.
  8. Is there a maintenance shop on your new field? If you're basing where you've been renting I suppose there is. Do they work on Mooneys? You will want to start a relationship with an A&P very early on. You'll want to get acquainted with https://www.aircraftspruce.com/ https://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/ What is your relationship with the prior owner? It would be helpful to be able to ask him/her questions for a few months. MS members collectively know everything there is to know about M20Js. Any question you ask will receive an almost instant answer here.
  9. Faced with a similar need to update I kept a 155.
  10. The original Owners Manual for my '66E (IO360A1A) calls for doing MAG check at 1700 RPM and to exercise prop at 1800-2000 RPM. While much of the wisdom from so long ago has been superseded I would not find fault with those RPM recommendations. You report that once airborne at higher power the prop control does reduce the RPM which is why I suggest you try using more power for your prop exercise for trouble shooting at least.
  11. The governor is adjustable and should be set so as to not exceed 2700, even on take off. You might need to exercise the prop at a little higher RPM, you should see a drop. Try 2100. Do you have an EDM? Oil pressure okay?
  12. The FAA Approved AFM for my '66E is a chuck full 1" 3 ring notebook. 13. If the G5 installation instructions are like the Aspen, the installer is required to use MPH since that is what the original owners manual uses. (A friendly hangar fairy can change it to KTS if desired.)
  14. Yeah, I thought so too. But apparently the very strong fire helps.
  15. I may have to take this back but so far since we installed the SureFly EI it doesn't seem to matter re hot or cold technique. Engine starts in one revolution... just like my cars.
  16. Don, no there are rollers fore and aft of the nose wheel. https://dragger.com/product/nose-dragger-dragger-electric-differential/
  17. Tom, mine cost $300 in 2014 - it had been sitting in the FBO's storage hangar, belonged to a guy who had sold his Cherokee 2 or 3 years earlier. The 24V battery was shot but I had a couple of Concorde 12Vs that were not airworthy but are still going strong 5 years later. I simplified the variable speed switch. The tug is great for a Mooney.
  18. I am blessed to live in a small city and to pay $250/mo for a like new T hangar with power bi-fold door, lights and multiple 115V outlets 230V for 5 HP compressor. KMRN has a 5500' x 100' runway. About 10 minutes from the house. Hangar has plenty of room for tools, supplies and office. No hangar rash, fuel truck comes to hangar, @AGL Aviation, 100 yards away. Lynn can come by on his golf cart to do installs, annuals, other maintenance and bless the work I do myself.
  19. '66E w PFS. Reinforced rubber is from Auto Parts Store hanger kit. Should outlast scrap tire sidewall... probably <$10. I am proud of the way I was able to "engineer" out the 90 deg twist of the hanger that wore out annually.
  20. Hi Bill Richards, welcome to MS. Do you fly a Mooney? Are you an avionics shop? Where are you located? You can add such info to your profile...
  21. Naw, it's more like a babble for a mistress.
  22. Someone suggested limiting the number of trim colors because of costs. Hawk did not charge me extra for 4 trim colors, all metallic Imron. Of course there might be good reason to keep it simpler but cost should not be a factor.
  23. I done got myself throwed out of the CB club some years ago. So did my panel hero @Marauder who once pretended to be a CB.
  24. "Investment"? You mean like AAPL?
