New to flying, would a Mooney fit my mission?
lamont337 replied to Rik's topic in General Mooney Talk
KSFO - KONT direct is 2:06 at 150kts not including climb. I vote M20E. 180kts will save you 15 minutes and that is 15 expensive minutes. With the money saved by going the "E" route you can end up with the autopilot, paint, interior, and other avionics you want/need. (In my C I would plan on 140kts and 2:15 plus climb, bought it at 120 hours) Scratch that, just hitch a ride with Larryb and split costs. I honestly think any of the models above would be adequate for your mission. Just comes down to how much $$$ and how they are equipped. Good luck to you- -
Fouled plug at around 20 hours

I think that's actually the mount for the lower cowl section... -
I only did a brief google search so consider the source: I see new Cirrus prices north of 600K and 2012 C172S prices at $307K. Maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places. G1000 is great and all, but the C172 still a 120kt airplane. At that price point I'd take the rebuilt J. Then again, I doubt I'd ever spend 300K on an airplane...

It depends. Mine actually have two different sizes. I think a previous owner screwed something up and had to re-tap one of the holes...

Would a 300XL work for you? I *might* be willing to part with mine. I believe the connections are all the same. The 300 adds IFR enroute and non-precision GPS approach capability to the GNC 250XL, with the appropriate annunciator of course. Shoot me a PM if your interested and I'll run it by my partner. Brian

Here's a great thread on the subject by Dan H. over at VAF: http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=37835 I had the same problem and even though my baffles all looked correct, I still think I had the same symptom he describes (not enough air flowing from the top of the cylinder down to the bottom due to fin depth on the rear side and baffle placement). I ended up spacing the baffle out a little behind my #4 which brought the climb temps down somewhere between 10-15 degrees. Btw, is it just one cylinder? If so, which one?

3) Don Maxwell has a great article and method for finding and fixing minor leaks, which I have used successfully. Link below: http://donmaxwell.com/publications/MAPA_TEXT/_overlay/Fuel%20Tank%20Repair_How%20We%20Fix%20Them%202-05.htm Note: I think it's easier to leave some fuel in the tanks instead of using soap.

Recommendation to stop fuel tank seep/leak in southeast
lamont337 replied to Htwjr's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If you are going to attempt a patch I highly recommend using Don Maxwell's method of identifying where the leak is coming from: http://donmaxwell.com/publications/MAPA_TEXT/_overlay/Fuel%20Tank%20Repair_How%20We%20Fix%20Them%202-05.htm I showed this to my mech and we used it to find 4 leaks on 2 separate occasions (didn't apply suction long enough the first time). Instead of using soap though, we used several gallons of fuel as I think the bubbles are easier to see through the plexi that way. One of the leaks was originating from the bottom/middle of the outboard tank and making all the way inside the cabin and it was several minutes before we saw the bubbles! Good luck -
I went with the one from Aero. Same thing, right? http://www.aeroinstock.com/products/204418-156/0/11519/product_detail/index.html Very happy with it.

64 M20C Weight/Balance Question
lamont337 replied to cfipilot80's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The short answer is yes, doable, but that would put me within 10 pounds of max gross and I probably wouldn't fly it that way with the DA's here in the southwest most of the year. -
Instrument Cluster Circuit Board Problem

Was SabreMech the one who posted this: http://www.mitchellproducts.com/modular.htm ? Bookmarked it a long time ago but don't remember who provided... -
Have it, like it, but a week after I got it the second generation stratus came out for $899. I was debating a switch back to Foreflight so the timing sucked. I was leaving on a month long trip so I kept the Clarity/WingX combo. The SV part is strictly novelty, wouldn't spend the money on that part again. Not saying I wouldn't use it if all else failed, but... I heard some folks had some overheat issues which prompted Sagetech to send out these little sun-shade things for them, but I haven't had any issues like that and I used it here in Vegas over the summer. Agree with what 201er says above. Sometimes I still want to switch back to Foreflight but you're locked in once you buy something like this. That's not a knock against the Clarity itself of course.

What Mechanical Faliures have you experienced in Mooney?
lamont337 replied to 201er's topic in General Mooney Talk
Yes, made a u-turn over Nellis and told the approach controller we needed to return to VGT. Told them we'd like to maintain our current altitude (about 6k) until we had the field made, which they were okay with even though I didn't declare. When they passed me off to the tower at VGT they told me I was cleared to land on any runway and asked if I needed any assistance. They were all very helpful. -

Mag - Plastic gear inside lost a few teeth. After a normal run-up I was climbing eastbound from VGT when the engine started to occasionally hiccup. Power was okay and I was already cleared through the bravo so I kept a slow climb towards Nellis AFB (Thanksgiving Day, no fighters in the air). I was within gliding distance pretty quickly so I started troubleshooting. One click to the left on the ignition key and it smoothed out. Two clicks to the left (and this is where I went wrong) and the noise of the engine was immediately replaced by the screams of my girlfriend. Until that moment she didn't know anything was wrong. Probably should have warned her. -
Pre-buy recommendations for Phoenix area
lamont337 replied to Hambone's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have a shade hangar at VGT. I was working on my IFR ticket with Jeremy at Elite Aviation for a while but I've fallen off the horse and it's been some time since my last lesson. I know Monarch Sky has a J for rent down at HND and with all the mods on the F your looking at the performance is probably similar. You might have better luck finding someone with lots of Mooney time down there. -

Which plane? You never know maybe one of our fellow Mooney Spacers has experience with it. Is it advertised on Controller or Trade-a-Plane? We want to drool too! -
Their prices are very reasonable, at least in my experience. Quoted about $80 to check my FP-5L a few years ago, ended up finding a loose wire though and didn't need to send it out. Also recently benched checked my MUX-8A and found no problem. Including shipping and a new download cable everything was only $83.

What brand and what size bottle do you currently have? I ask because the manufacturers that I'm familiar with (Aerox and Skyox) sell the regulators separately so if your tank size is adequate you can just replace this one part with a 4 place (which unfortunately is the most expensive part). Otherwise you can get a whole new system with a bigger tank and 4 outlets from either manufacturer. http://www.skyox.com/ http://www.aerox.com/portable.html You might find cheaper prices at Sportys.com or Aircraftspruce.com, but I don't know if they ship international. Hope this helps.

Poor stall instruction plaguing GA?
lamont337 replied to 201er's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
This has definitely been a hot topic with the FAA lately as they (and a few other 3 & 4 letter organizations) push to decrease fatalities and accidents in GA. Check out the two articles below. http://www.flyingmag.com/blogs/going-direct/new-angles-aoa http://www.faa.gov/news/fact_sheets/news_story.cfm?newsId=13672 From the second link: "The FAA has streamlined the approval of angle of attack indicators for GA aircraft and is working to promote the retrofit of the existing fleet. Angle of attack indicators provide the pilot with a visual aid to prevent Loss of Control of the aircraft in the critical phases of flight. Previously, cost and complexity of indicators limited their use to the military and commercial aircraft. The FAA is also streamlining the certification and installation of inflatable restraints (air bags)with the goal of making all GA aircraft eligible for installation." -
I got a quote from LASAR about a year and a half ago for all parts including accutrak. About 3K if I remember correctly, but then they would have had to go to Brittain to be inspected/tagged. (Never got a quite from Brittain but I've heard its reasonable) Then I read an article that stated in order to install a PC system in an older model, I would have to replace my "curved" aileron with the later symetrical style: "Incidently, this aileron change is required if retrofitting a PC system or an autopilot to a pre'65 model Mooney." http://www.mooneypilots.com/mapalog/m20e.html Of course that was from the M20E evaluation report, but I also have the curved ailerons on my C. Something to consider...

I had to replace my nose strut as well but don't let that scare you. When we went to do the bushing kit we found out that someone had already tried and f--'d it up. Cost a little over 1 amu but now there is no slop and stops for the steering were added. Money well spent and it should last a few decades.

I have one as well (installed by previous owner) and I've been having trouble with the downloads for the last few months. Download starts okay but the program freezes after about a minute. I've tried re-downloading the software on two different laptops and next I'm going to try some different cables. If that doesn't do the trick I'll have to send in the data recorder (Mux-8a, separate unit) in for a check. If I were in the market I'd probably go for something a little more modern (self contained unit, USB connection) but it is okay for the cost and performs well in flight.
