  1. http://www.ramaircraft.com/Maintenance-Tips/Engine%20Corrosion%2002-15.pdf Not mooney specific, but good write-up on engine use from people that know engines.
  2. Anyone know if any of the new GPS offerings (650/750/540 etc.) take advantage of any of the planned upgrades associated with the GPS III satellite constellation?
  3. There's a lot of issues with ADS-B, but the one that frightens me the most is safety. ATC is only responsible for seperation of IFR traffic from each other (all good, all on ADS-B and tracking) but that VFR target that didn't comply is now invisible, ATC isn't responsible and the ground radar sites that used to paint that target will be decommissioned (isn't that the true value of the program).
  4. Don, the best info I've seen is http://www.aopa.org/-/media/Files/AOPA/Home/Pilot-Resources/Safety-and-Proficiency/Accident-Analysis/Nall-Report/08nall.pdf. It doesn't break out CFI, but if you look at the graphs around page 8, commercial license doesn't seem to be the trick, ATP however...
  5. Goes slower, burns more gas and is as nimble as a truck but my family has been happy in the back of the Lance I got a year ago when I had the same problem. On the plus side, for passengers it's the difference of coach to business class, and it does ride turbulence better.
  6. what? and here I thought BR=Baby Rain
  7. Govt of the people, by the people and for the people. Hows that working for us now. Reality seems to be in todays market Experimental is winning, RV/Lancair/etc. If I can buy one of these (instead of building) and get all the benefits, why can't we do the same with our certified aircraft? Simple answer should be any plane (6000 lbs seems a bit light, an Epic is 7500 max ramp) can be turned 'experimental' and comply with restrictions of that category.
  8. Until you land at a landmark base where they charge you $7+ a gallon, landing fees and sneer at you if you ask to use a quiet place for a call even though the conference rooms are empty. The other 90% of folk are great though.
  9. http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/digital_products/ifr/ Download the DERS file, the README explains where and how to get data for the approaches and what data is in the file. Still free. (edit, paid for by our existing aviation taxes) Still has language from the attempt to make it paid back in 2011. Chris.
  10. Royal duke would be nice if there was enough $'s in that lottery. Fast, pressurized, still get into short fields. http://www.controller.com/listingsdetail/aircraft-for-sale/BEECHCRAFT-B60-DUKE-TURBOPROP/1982-BEECHCRAFT-B60-DUKE-TURBOPROP/1284175.htm
  11. Area forecasts are a great way of getting a hint to cloud tops.
  12. Don't have one yet, but the biggest selling point (other than HSI) for me is the failure mode. Gyro fails, you may or may not notice for a while, ending up in an unusual attitude no-gyro in IMC is not my idea of fun. Big red X hard to miss though.
  13. If they could get a pressurized diesel optimized to fly 10-20k, they could have a winner. Mooney's not a trainer, the NA market is tough with Cessna / Beech / Piper and the used market, the 20k+ turbine flyers are dominated by Pilatus / TBM / Lancair / Piper. Mooney has to find a nich that is relatively empty. Problem is that a Lancair Evolution is 1.2MM, tough to beat that with anything.
  14. Interesting that there's no mention of extending to the 696/796, is this just an omission or is Garmin not wanting to cannibalize gdl-39 sales?
  15. More people die every year in recreational boating accidents than GA, go write that story.
  16. 231, +1 if you get permission to use the rocket stc and provide a rocket upgrade option again.
  17. http://www.electricrider.com/phoenix-paratrooper-electric-bikes-s/1896.htm Don't know if it fits, but what fun...
  18. Let me ask the 650/750 guys, I've played with the 540 simulator and the one feature I really like is the integrated vertical planning, every way-point now has an altitude restriction option (auto-populated for approaches). Does the 650/750 have this? I can see it really useful for approaches and STARS.
  19. Simple answer, teach one of the kids to fly and get a second Mooney.
  20. daver328 has a point, what other civilian federal employee do you ever want to see/speak to? IRS? HHS? Customs?
  21. Don't have ads-b, but for android I've tried a lot of the apps, and iFly seems the nicest, free 30day trial for you nexus owners.
  22. If it's VMC, field in sight, you have a GPS you'll find it. If it's not (VMC) or you're not comfortable visual (unfamiliar airport, terrain issues, night, whatever), request an approach.
  23. The only stat that helped my ease the mind of my wife was the NTSB annual report on GA accidents vs BOATING (more people die in boat accidents most years). That, and having her listen to the radio while we flew and get an appreciation of how many people are up there with us NOT falling out of the sky.
  24. Helicopter for this range/mission seems more appropriate, better routing through the airspace, probably limited to VFR operations which may not be an issue.
  25. Wow, never read about Prism...scary to think of a Rocket moving along w/ 400bhp in the flight levels.
