Takeoff trim tail gap measurement?
jetdriven replied to jetdriven's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Where it feels OK the trim indicator is quite a bit nose up from the takeoff mark -
Can somebody set their M20 J trim at takeoff position and then measure the gap at the bottom between the tail assembly and the back edge of the fuselage skin? Curious if mine is right

that is usually PRC, used to seal around the perimeter of the windows to give it an nice look. Its around the side windows too. the stuff to glue the windshield in is similar, but CS3330 is low adhesion.

if you drill it carefully, you can use CR3212-4-2 or -4-3 rivets. OR CR3242 which are 1/64" OS. the -5 are larger, and the retainer strip is dimpled to match #4 rivets. They wont look right. the -4s look factory.

Wow, I did not hear about this one. What was the cause of the engine failure?

Berrymans B12 Chemtool is also an effective solvent to flush the rings with.

I know an Acclaim is 800,000 but my plane is not worth it. We can’t justify parts prices based on the price of a new airplane. How about the cost to produce Plus fair margin, not 10 times the cost to produce. At the Mooney homecoming a few years ago we talked to the lady who builds ailerons on a flat table. It takes her and part time help about a day or so to build almost 2 ailerons. These things cost like $4000 apiece and that was the price a few years ago. No wonder so many Mooneys at Oshkosh have hail damaged ailerons, the cost to replace them is just unreasonable. No for the most part, I think the Mooney Parts prices have been fairly reasonable. We paid them plenty of times. But they should take a look at their cost per unit plus number of units shipped they’ll realize that they can get gouge insurance companies for gear doors for example but other people are going to find different ways

Any idea where to get a strap, door pull?
jetdriven replied to Jim Peace's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Tell hector to put a Kevlar strap inside the leather so it doesn’t stretch. Also make the strap that goes on the windshield Pillar too. -
Basically, nothing. They still show it as “active” by default. So the STC item is not being made and you can’t make it yourself. like the M20Turbos STC. Bill Sandman died years ago.

Aviation Insurance Market Update
jetdriven replied to Parker_Woodruff's topic in General Mooney Talk
You clipped off the , in general, part. it’s a million dollar airplane that requires part 135 style recurrent annually. Not as many 100 hour private pilots show up with their instructor to take it home as we have with small piston singles. -
Aviation Insurance Market Update
jetdriven replied to Parker_Woodruff's topic in General Mooney Talk
It’s a more professional pilot that flies that airplane, in general, than many piston singles. If you had to go to flight safety every year and get recurrent in your 201 you’d like to see a similar loss ratio and insurance rate -
I already did that, cost me 100 bucks do you remember? It ended with you wanting me to pay for the tooling and round up 33 deposits to send to you then you ghosted me.

Cause of insulator erosion on Tempest fine wires
jetdriven replied to RobertE's topic in General Mooney Talk
Supppsedly it also strips the iridium coating off the fire wire plugs. Have you run the fire wire plugs 500 hours like this to see if they erode? I don’t even clean them. Done this for 600 hours. I pick the lead out of them and reinstall. -
1986 M20K Oil Pressure Gauge InOp
jetdriven replied to Robb Alpaugh - N252YL's topic in General Mooney Talk
The Mitchell 0 to 150 psi oil pressure sender is only 40 bucks from aircraft Spruce. Unplug the sender. Ground the wire that goes to SEND on the back of the gauge cluster. If your op gauge goes from full left to full-scale right respectively in the gauge is OK. Replace The sender and roll-on. It’s a wear item -
The T-9088 is a cheaper seal. It’s A sponge rubber P shape. The BA706-M is D shaped and has a foam core. It looks similar to that Beech seal above. the BA706-M they have in stock is much stiffer than 60 durometer. And I also had a 3 year old bag of the BA706-M which is the proper material. It’s compliant and soft, and has the proper shape. I’m not sure how a P shaped seal is going to seal a Mooney cabin door. The void between the two is idea for the D shape.

Just measure the startup voltage between C-D on the connector. If it’s over 1.2 or 1.5 V, run it on 12 V power supply for 20 minutes then try again. If that doesn’t work Ship for overhaul

It is under the inspection panel just outboard of the left either on pushrod where it goes to the aileron. There’s not really a way to clean it, the brushes are inside the servo motor and the gears may get some stuff on them but you have to take servo out of the airplane and take the cover off of it to access those

Intake rubber accordion boot
jetdriven replied to Pete 379's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Are you sure that is even EPDM rubber? All the EP DM I’ve seen last 15 years or longer. It’s not the same as this nitrile rubber sprayed over fabric that it probably is made of -
Mooney's answer to the 'chute?
jetdriven replied to mike_elliott's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
The G3000 is a completely integrated system. There are so many variables in retrofitting this that there is no way it’s possible. Short of a complete retrofit of a g3000. But you need control of the throttle. Mixture. Fuel selector. Flaps. Gear. Brakes. In a modern CANBUS aircraft you simply send a request since it’s all electronic anyway. that’s just the aircraft variables. How about weather. Crosswinds. Wires. Open Fields. Obstructions. hence the parachute. Only a couple variables. Inside envelope or not. What it eventually lands on. In this class of aircraft it’s the optimal solution. For a M600, the emergency auto land. For a 737. Two pilots and rigorous standards. -
Mooney's answer to the 'chute?
jetdriven replied to mike_elliott's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
you're right. strike that example. Lets take a random sample of a Mooney (or Bonanza etc) aircraft that have had inflight power loss and subsequent landings, and the same sample size of Cirrus airplanes. Lets analyze the outcomes. Yours is one, and it turned out very well. -
Mooney's answer to the 'chute?
jetdriven replied to mike_elliott's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Its not about me, thanks for the reminder. But calling me classless turned the discussion. COPA may disagree with your assessment. I havent heard of one taking out a house full of children yet. That's a straw man argument. Yes, they pull at altitude, and the aircraft descends under canopy at 15-28 FPS. While the pilot has no control after that point, the stats bear out very good outcomes. But the pilot doesnt have to make a split-second choice between bad or worse outcomes. I'm not criticising Mr. B's actions. But he had fewer options than are currently available. Personal choice, but dont call a CAPS-equipped airplane inferior to a Mooney. Three days ago we had a very close near midair collision. The 172 passed less than 15' below us travelling from left to right. It makes you think of another option besides certain death from airframe destruction after a midair. Maybe it would still fly, maybe we would be killed from impact. But its like the .45 in your nightstand drawer. Its one more option that others dont have. Discuss that. -
Mooney's answer to the 'chute?
jetdriven replied to mike_elliott's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
If he had a Cirrus we could ask him. Do you wish to comment on the issue, Mike, or simply comment again about me. This a big shortcoming of legacy aircraft. Hitting obstacles at 60+ KT with everything that happens after that. I think most pilots greatly discount that risk. -
Mooney's answer to the 'chute?
jetdriven replied to mike_elliott's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
you have a very low drag aircraft, I’m not sure if it can even fly a 3 degree glide path clean at a reasonable speed. -
Mooney's answer to the 'chute?
jetdriven replied to mike_elliott's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Ask Mr. Brandemuhl’s family if they would’ve wished he had bought a parachute-equipped plane. Well I appreciate all of the Mooney airplane’s positives, I think technology is leaving it behind. Also I did not know Cirrus airplanes any less crashworthy or indestructible. FAR 23 is a higher standard than CAR 3. -
I pulled wire out to the location of the other probe out there and install the JPI probe. If you leave the guard off of it it’s actually quite small so we just used it with a nut
