  1. GAMi has a test just for this, they call it a high-low test. I did that, and it was inconclusive. Then we pressurized the intake with the exhaust of a shop vac. Again no leaking Intake gaskets found. So I preemptively change them anyway, the simple cheap paper gaskets. But I coated them with permatex aviation sealer. Anyway after we did all that work the airplane wouldn’t start so I cracked the throttle a good bit and then It would start but is soon as you pull the power to idle it would shut it off cleanly. It took about three turns on the idle stop screw to get it to idle smoothly at low RPM. That’s how big of a vacuum leak we fixed. And this was on a 200 hour factory engine that hadn’t been apart. So I’m a big believer in coating those gaskets now for sure.
  2. Iirc airflow performance also makes a valve.
  3. This is also form the FAA. seems if it’s on the STC AML and it is NOT a FAR 1.1 definition of major, it can be a log entry.. “Therefore, an alteration done in accordance with a STC would constitute a major alteration if it "might appreciably affect weight, balance, structural strength, performance, powerplant operation, flight characteristics, or other qualities affecting airwmihiness" or "is not done according to accepted practices or cannot be done by elementary operations." 14 C.F.R. § 1.1. Any such alteration would require the completion of FAA Form 337.” https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/agc/practice_areas/regulations/interpretations/data/interps/2016/bowers - (2016) legal interpretation.pdf
  4. That’s indicative of An induction leak. The higher vacuum of part-throttle operation causes the vacuum leak to admit more air than at WOT. Which can change the spread
  5. I don’t have a whole lot of faith in synthetic vision finding you a road without wires or obstructions. As far as flat terrain, yes the terrain in Texas and Eastern CO is fairly flat, but there are plenty of trees and other obstacles. Really it’s just going to come down to luck.
  6. The wingtip sky beacon is a minor alteration, thus no 337 form. But the whole premise of leaving the NAV lights on ( especially while not being placarded) it is pretty stupid. Also a lot of aircraft, when you turn the NAV lights on it dims the landing gear and the clock and the radio lights. Then you can’t see it the gear is down or up because the lights are too dim to see. And another thing, the wingtip sky beacon strobe light is a joke. It’s not as bright as an iPhone flashlight and the pattern is pretty terrible too. But somehow they conned the FAA into accepting it as meeting the requirements.
  7. That sniffle valve is actually a Mooney airframe part. So the bottom of the manifold may have a pipe plug in it but this is an airframe item.
  8. The bulb is certified as part of an assembly that is certified. That Bulb the OP was holding his hand was certainly not some garden-variety incandescent bulb, it was a very specific shape with a backlit reflector inside. That puts light in a certain pattern that’s acceptable. But when you put a 360 degree LED bulb in there don’t really know what you’re getting. the whelen chroma led bulbs also have that shape or light pattern.
  9. What product is that. I got the soundex stuff from aircraft spruce but sent it back because it weighed 20lb.
  10. I think the flat rate repair is 1250 for the GTN
  11. I agree. If you take off without your nav lights on then you risk a violation in the DC airspace. It’s frankly, ridiculous.
  12. Excel spreadsheet. W x A = M add them up at the bottom
  13. The new DLC coated lifters from lycoming are not garbage. In fact They are the only thing short of a roller lifter that does not get corrosion and pitting and then spall. Talk to your buddy at LyCon again. he will not put anything else in engines he builds. Also I would pay for the porting. . I think it’s real gains. A friend of mine sent his Cessna 205 case out for the same process. 200 house later it cracked. The warranty is limited to sending in the case again and if they can weld repair it they will. Dont kid yourself, it’s not a new case. Its repaired.
  14. At the Garmin tent at OSH we asked about this and the Garmin rep showed me a screenshot that has an anonymous mode button at the bottom of the transponder page on the GTN 750. Maybe it’s dealer configurable
  15. Sniffle valve can be a significant induction leak at idle. the intake gaskets need to be coated with Permatex aviation sealer or they can continue to leak. They’re just cheap paper. also, old worn plugs can cause poor idle too.
  16. I am not even sure they weigh every aircraft that comes off of the line... often they weigh every third or fifth airplane and then apply that, so the original weight and balance is an estimate itself
  17. You paid 15.5k right? That’s right at market price, likely higher than average. You don’t have to accept that.
  18. They never add up in your favor. Its legal to continue to do math.
  19. If you just open your hand when the seat slides back, it doesnt force a stall. A death grip on the yoke is hard to let go of.
  20. Even in the Boeing planes, hands on the throttles after takeoff. Many years ago, we had a Beech 1900D declare an emergency for engine failure, the low time director of safety was the CA on that one. They did a 180 and landed, one of the throttles vibrated back to idle. Still running.
  21. Baggage door, or cabin door, at low speed and certain to stop, sure, reject,. But otherwise, take it in the air. the airplane flies just fine. In the case of the cabin door, no damage. The baggage door (often the cabin door also) wont open until you are lifting off anyway, and the damage done is what it is. But certainly no reason to crash a flyable airplane.
  22. It’s certainly possible. I’ve done it a couple times when we had a tennis ball to cover the pitot tube. Now I don’t do that anymore.
  23. It’s not long enough to get to 55kt and the reject the takeoff. But it’s long enough to take off. Or reject at low speed.
  24. It is happened to me, and you figure it out just about at the time the airplane is ready to lift off.
  25. I have flown in and out of that airport in my plane on a hot day and it is more than adequate enough to get airspeed to take off. An airspeed indicator is nice, but it sure as heck isn’t required on the VFR day
