  1. It all depends on the failure mode. If one just quits it wouldn't be a big deal. If one started cross firing or somehow advanced itself, then it is very possible the engine would not produce enough power to maintain altitude. In that case you would want to figure out which one was bad and run off the other one.
  2. I replaced all of mine at once, since they looked like the original ones. I believe it was the one in the lower corner that was hard to get to. McMaster has any size or stiffness that you might need.
  3. Check with Scott. He is parting out a J and should have a gauge. I also see them on ebay pretty regularly.
  4. My brother and I purchased a low time 150 for $16,000 and both got our PPL in it. We put 300 hrs on it in 2 years and a set of cylinders and sold it for $20,000 Insurance was $500 year. Annual was around $400. Hanger was $60 per month. It's also worth something having your own plane setting at the airport that you can go get in any time you want without having to schedule a plane or see if one is available.
  5. Aero-In-Stock has them for $51. There are several $20 NAPA (not MAPA) belts in use around my airport.
  6. There is an AC on power analysis, I don't remember the number. They(FAA) only want you to use 80% of your alternator output, and assume a worse case which they define at night in freezing conditions ( All lights and pitot heat on). They also say assume the battery is partially discharged and some of the alternator output is being used to charge the battery. They do give a little break for temp loads like landing gear and radio transmissions. Also remember only one radio at time can transmitt.
  7. You may want to remove the side panels and rear seats and check the seam between the floor and lower wing skin. This is a 2-3 inch wide gap that was taped up at the factory. The tape had long since turned loose and was just laying there. It took two afternoons to remove the old stuff, clean up the mess and retape and seal it. I found some heavy weight aluminum tape with fiber reinforcement from mcmaster and 3M caulk strip. If the plane has ever had fuel leaks around the root of the wing, the tape adhesive will be disolved by the fuel.

  12. The 496 outputs serial data, the brittain inputs a small DC voltage that is used to drive the CDI. There is a company out west somewhere that makes a small inexpensive adaptor box for the eperimental market. I believe I remember a gain adjustment that can cause this. Do you have the install manual? I think it covers the adjustment. There could also be a ground potential difference between the 3 boxes.   13. If you don't get a sure answer, Its easily measured with a cheap digital level. Either measure the differnce in the panel and the level datum for the plane, or just place the level on the panel while in level flight.

  15. You can buy the 4 tank unit for $5300. 4700 for the install is absurd
  16. Front height is not only thing to consider. The depth is limited at the top of the stack. I'm not exactly sure of the year (around 80?), but at some point Mooney changed the geometry of the bar that runs down the center of the windshield so the depth isn't as much of an issue.
  17. Have it opened up by someone who knows where to look. If its just a few small external spots it would not be that big of a deal to me, but if it was internal or coming out from around seams you are asking for trouble. Check the wheel wells closely, look for bubbling paint. Of the 5 planes I looked at 4 of them had corrosion in this area.

  19. Yes you have to add another pair of master cylinders, and replace the current copilot pedals and linkages. The brackets are already welded on at the factory so mounting the master cylinders is easy. Routing and forming the brake lines is another matter. I used the factory drawings and found the parts on E-bay.
  20. The current shunt for the ampmeter has 2 inline fuses that are a small value. Check them. They are round glass ones.
  21. Some of them are probably hoping their plane will get flipped.
  22. It could be because you have a lot less blow by now that you have a new engine. When the engine is cold oil should not be going through the oil cooler if the vernatherm is working correctly.
  23. Is this the 1st time using it since getting the plane? If so make sure the radio really has the glideslope module installed. The glideslope and localizer share the same antenna and coax up until behind the panel. There it goes through the diplexer which is basically a splitter and notch filter that seperates the localizer and glideslope frequencies. From there it goes into the radio on 2 different pieces of coax. Look at this and make sure nothing is broken or unplugged.
  24. Someone had copies for sale on ebay about 2 years ago. They were nicely made, cnc machined and powdercoated. They started off selling for about $175 a pair and after 10 or 12 pair were sold the bidding interest decreased. I got one of the last pair that was auctioned for $75
  25. He lower than he should have been, but it would be difficult for him to see the car. Watch the slow motion video and put yourself in pilots seat. He would have to been looking at a 60 and 70 degree angle to his right and downward to see the car. The car only came into the picture the last couple of seconds. At that point that close to the runway he was probably looking straight ahead down the runway as he should have been.
