I had a full sized iPad on the yoke in either portrait or landscape mode. Ended up liking portrait mode better because I could fit it in between the yoke horns better. I kept the top edge aligned so I could see my cowl flap handle and the lighting switches (early J). However, coming home a couple of weeks ago I had a 15-19 kt crosswind for which I usually use half flaps. I ended up having the edge of the iPad touch my belly during flare (probably a combination of trim position, my seat position and more control inputs in gusty winds). I didn't like that, went around and chucked the iPad in the copilot seat. Weird part is that pre takeoff control check I pull the yoke through the oh my my arms aren't that strong full aft deflection stop and had no issues with the iPad in the same position. Must have been my seat position. I still prefer the yoke but would recommend being very careful about how far back you could possibly get the edge of the full sized iPads (mine was like CNoe's is currently). The orher thing I've noticed is that a smaller screen with better resolution is better than a larger screen with poor resolution. The iPad that was sitting on the yoke is a non - retina iPad 2 I also have a 6+ iPhone that is my daily driver. I mount that to the front lower corner of the pilots window where my awesome telex hand mic sits and use a ram suction cup with a x-grip. This thing is perfect for the Mooney in that it stays up and out of the way of the panel and is just peripheral to my scan. I'll post a picture when I can. Highly recommended, though. So... ordered a mini 2 with Retina display to go in the yoke and will keep the iPhone on the Window. The old iPad will be my in flight entertainment system which means that the Elmo play ball episode will be on a continuous loop. Hope this is helpful. -B

Thanks for the info Bob. I took advantage of a RAM mount for a decent price... to go with the replacement iPad mini 2 64Gb + 4G that I picked up for a price I couldn't pass up on the new egg flash site (pop up deals). There are some good deals to be had for tablets / iPads out there if you do some research (by that I mean google). Anyone know if Tempest fine wires go on sale peri-Oshkosh / SnF? Otherwise I might have to ask the Mrs for a nice xmas present. Spark plugs. Aaah. Isn't my life exciting ;-) -Brad

Does this work for a GDL 69/69A as well? If so I'd be willing to try to drop it. Worst case I decide I'm not ready to cut the cord and put it back on. If if anyone asks I can say I'm installing the 69 on the spinnaker of my yagit. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YrbY4hsNh64

Nice to see the Sandia unit TSO'd. If they had gotten the altimeter function TSOd as well and, being a solid state instrument, leveraged that altimeter as an encoding unit they would have hit a grand slam. Still pretty cool.

I've used isopropyl alcohol as a degreaser. Safe for aluminum from what I've read. Heck I've used it in sensitive electronics without untoward effect. -
Is Alan going to fly the one with no flaps and no radios that he's parting out over on beech talk? ;-)

I'll try to make it. Will have to run it by the boss. The only airport restaurant I've been to in NJ is at Lincoln Park (which is great btw). Airport can be a little squirlly depending on winds and if landing 01 though. Lancairs invited? If so I will pass on to my buddy with a 360.

Which transponder setups are STC'd for use with an Avidyne 440/540 for ADS-B compliance? The Avidyne offering is a given, but I can't seem to find info on anything else. -B

Any polished Mooneys out there?
bradp replied to Wildhorsesracing's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Bird was outside at that point so probably about 5-6 months before I wondered why I did it. It was awesome when it was fresh. I'd be willing to do it again now that the plane lives indoors, but it's going in for repaint soon. Thus the motivation is not really there. -

Any polished Mooneys out there?
bradp replied to Wildhorsesracing's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I did a clay bar on every surface of my J during the first year I had it. Worked on it for a full week. I was sore for probably a month. Looked pretty good when I was done, though. -
Or we could make it into a Tail of Two Moonies....It was the best of Mooney times.... it was the worst of Mooney times.

So far happy with the whelen super LED (not the new Super PLUS LED). I am still getting used to the blue hue versus the warm yellow. I will say that it casts a beam that is a bit further but a bit narrower than the GE bulb and the blue light takes some getting used to. I look more for reflection on the runway paint than undo the asphalt lighting up. I've used it at night with only well lit airports so far. I will say that I don't quite get the peripheral vision cues that I would get on flare with the yellow GE light casting light through the pilot side window. My night landings kind of sucked initially with the bulb but are better now. Part of this is me needing to adjust the bulb further downward - I'll report back whether this makes a difference. I really like being able to leave it on all the time without worrying about heat or the bulb burning out. I also just cleaned and refinished the lens cover from nearly opaque yellow to something better. I'll see how well that improves things.

LASAR fiberglass dorsal fin and vertical fin seal
bradp replied to jetdriven's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Byron which models are on the AML for the STC for this seal? Thanks -Brad -
Ymmv but there's a thread going on over at BT about LED replacement bulbs for post lights, etc. http://www.beechtalk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=88851&view=unread#unread bennett my glare shield light bar cover has developed and unsightly and distracting crack along the not so clear plastic. What luminescent bar did you go with? The LED lights referenced above certainly look nice but I don't like the idea of having to do a 337 for something as simple as panel lighting given (once again) only B/C/and Ps are included in their STCs AML. For that reason NuLites seem more attractive. thanks b

I just fiddled with this new graphical briefing. Seems an improvement from the usual way. I must say that anything that is less than a straightforward flight I still like to talk to a human, however varied that experience may be. http://blog.foreflight.com/2015/11/11/graphical-preflight-briefing-in-foreflight-7-4/

Hi guys I noted on my last flight that my 40-year odd KX170B has suddenly decided to indicate off by exactly 90-degrees (i.e. I'm on the 180-radial inbound and the NAV2 is indicating I'm on the 090-radial inbound). Picks up VORs no problem. Just odd that it's off by exactly 90-deg. I'm thinking that this will probably mean a replacement box but I just found it odd. Will play in to whatever I decide for WAAS upgrade etc thanks b

I have the worlds most CB MFD by having connected the 430 to a 296. Single RS232 connection to a single pin on the 430. Avionics shop did it in less than an hour. It's pretty great. I have basic nav info on the 430 and terrain and moving map on the 296 most of the time. b

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll let you know how it pans out. Weather should be "skipped" for the flight down. Leaving before the cold front moves through, spending a day in Virginia to visit the grandparents and then leaving after the fronts moved through. Not the greatest of beach spots this time of year but it's not too far for the Baby, warm enough and hey... It's vacation so happy enough. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hi fellow MSers, We are planning a trip from Pittsburgh to Saint Simons Island this weekend. I'd do the trip nonstop no problem (3:45) but we will be traveling with a toddler so we'll plan to break the trip up over two days. First stop will be LYH to visit family and then we'll head to SSI. For that second leg (2hr43min) I'll probably need to break it up further into an ~1 hr leg and then a 1:45 hr leg so that the kiddo doesn't go nuts. Anyone have suggestions ions for a good place to stop, preferably for lunch, and with facilities that will accommodate a diaper change,in South Carolina? If that place has cheap gas for a top off even better. Thanks and take care brad

Yes slicks can produce a weak spark. This was the issue with my left mag that came back from overhaul. Lycoming technical support had my A&P and I measure spark produced across an air gap of varying lengths for each mag from mag to the end of the spring on the lead / harness to a good ground. There was a value below which will not fire an engine. This was for an IO360.
