  1. I wonder if faced with a similarly crappy situation once you knew you had the field made and cut the power would you 1) leave the prop flat to try to prevent windmilling given you know you've got the field... And 2) give the starter a nudge or two to maybe get the prop horizontal if it's not being wind milled. Personally I'd just care about landing the damn thing but am just thinking about possibilities. 2. When I was in grad school I would spend Saturday mornings in some sh!tty laundromat and study a continental 737-800 manual while the dryer ran. I was that much of a nerd. I did learn a lot about systems though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. The length for the screw portions of the camlocks are different for the aft most camlock, the ones along the side, the ones at the forward corners. The illustrated parts manual (google it and download it from the free.fr website that is the first or second hit) has the parts numbers and they're readily available. -B Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Hi all I had posted in the other ongoing thread but my 201 with its lively 1977 brown and orange original paint scheme was involved in a heavens openeth and vomiteth hail upon thee incident last week. I'll post some pics at some point but damage involves control surfaces, flaps, body and h-stab. Not so much v stab but rudder is involved. I'm starting to out together an estimate for the insurance adjustor and the paperwork process involved. I'm asking Henry Weber to start an estimate as that is once of the few shops that has sufficient experience to do the controls and ensure proper rigging. Dorn at Henry Weber, the scheme designers website and my insurance adjustor all recommended Lancaster aircraft refinishers at Smoketown Airport as someone who they trust to properly fill and who have been putting out quality paint jobs. Does anyone have experience with this paint shop? I'm pretty set on bringing her back to H-W for this incident, but this will be my first foray into paint. I was reading that other thread about polished mooneys and thought hey well that sounds pretty neat. No polishing except maybe the spinner in my Mooneys future... Unless I'm willing to do it for smallpox awareness month or something. Thanks for any and all advice. Take care Brad Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. Hi guys. I just got that dreaded call that a hail storm moved through and had her way with my 201. I'll post separately but am just trying to process it right now. Same damage extent as Gary it looks like. I'll be on the phone with falcon momentarily. I feel awful as had I known severe weather was on its way I would have pulled her inside but was instead sleeping of a night shift. Poor poor plane. Btw I am really not enjoying western PA weather. Awful winters and true Midwest summers. Ugh. Don't mean to offend any natives. B Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. AGC has one mechanic and he helped me out in a pinch. Nice guy and competent but he's not interested in doing annuals or airframe specific mooney work. -B Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Last week did a trip and over the Shenandoah Valley VFR FF PCT called two targets simultaneously. Couldn't see them but I told PCT that I was happy to take a vector if it looked like they would be a factor. I was hoping to let the controller know that he won't be bothering me as a VFR target with an instruction. I'd rather take a 2 min detour than worry about not seeing something I should see in VMC. That's just me though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Anyone know whether the accident rate on a twin with centerline thrust (ie 337 sky master) is any better than that with over wing engines? You'd think out of balance issues would you be less. However single engine 337 May be underpowered. I don't know enough about them .... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. In Pittsburgh KPIT may be about the Light GA friendliest Class B I've encountered. VFR practice approach in sequence with the jets? No prob (see attached photo documentation from this week). AGC is the local satellite, fine FBOs and not ridiculous fuel pricing. FWQ is a bit out of the way but nicely lit well maintained runway and an on airport restaurant. Gas was 4.90 there this past weekend. have fun and stay safe. This sounds like quite an adventure. BTW my first date with our NA mooney about 0 hours after competing my checkout was from Fresno to Boston. I took the southern route FWIW. -B Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. My only advice is to be very cognizant of the pressures, stressors, risk factors (weather, terrain, etc) and make an appropriate decision. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I bought one from Bruce's as well. They honored an OSH discount in March or something. I sent them photos and measurements to figure out where the antennas would go. They sent me a great looking cover missing the antenna hole. They covered shipping back and put in a Velcro thing to slide round the antenna no additional charge. Excellent customer service. 14. I did a high performance checkout in a G1000 C182 with TIS and was receiving flight following under the Boston class bravo. Very surprised to see a sailplane floating along about 100 feet opposite direction converging course. No transponder in that aircraft. I've also become wary of unmarked weather balloons. Or that skydive op that called a drop to approach but didn't bother broadcasting on the CTAF. During their climb I had entered the airspace and heard nothing more. I remember little dots popping out from a broken layer in MVFR conditions while Iwas on a downwind. Got the F out of Dodge on that one. Or that other twin at Oceanside MD that was broadcasting on the wrong CTAF frequency and passed me in the pattern from behind and below. Goes to show that assuming some idiot is trying to skewer you at every moment is probably the correct thinking and every tool, most importantly the eyes and ears, should be used to keep us out of trouble. 16. Hey guys I'm a pediatrician so I can offer some general advice. Don't worry about the percentage of oxygen at altitude. Babies can tolerate as much altitude as you can if not more (young infants ~<3-4 mo have fetal hemoglobin still, which is better than your adult hemoglobin at picking up oxygen at low partial pressure). Re the congestion it's all about pressure equalization across the eardrum. Babies aren't good at being able to pop their ears to equalize pressure. Our pediatrician told me (also pediatrician) not to go above 6000 feet but I think they were making up the number. NA engine cruising altitudes work just fine - 8000 will be approximate to what you see an airliner cabin pressurized to. The key is recognizing when the baby has congestion and avoiding flying then because of of the risk of the eardrums being pressurized. Not so much sinuses for infants (< 12 months) as they don't really even have sinuses, just rudimentary ones. It's all about the ear drums. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  20. Had my first flight with new pucks on Sunday. I would have otherwise had a less than stellar plant on the runway that felt oh so smooth. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  22. Inquiry will only tell. Or maybe not. However, on an IFR plan in VMC as PIC in the most maneuverable airplane in the world... Why oh why start a standard rate turn oh so gently to avoid the traffic you clearly don't have a visual reference to and the controller is imploring to avoid. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Yes Chris there are owner assist programs for most major kit manufacturers where you can go to the factory and participate in the build with experienced people looking after you. They are careful about doing "49%" of the work so the owner can be issued a repairmans certificate and the kit can still qualify as a home build instead of a factory build. Perhaps someone with direct experience can chime in ... BTW if I could build a carbon Fiber J kit airframe using a diesel power plant, cut the empty weight, increase useful load and keep all of the wonderful aerodynamic characteristics that we love Id be a very happy pilot. I'm imagining a true 4-place (not a 3 place trainer) doing 160 kts on 8 gal/hr of jet-a with a 1000 lb useful load. The modern materials and technology have the potential to improve the efficiency that sets the J apart and perhaps add a little something extra Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. I did the same a couple of years ago with a Bruce's cover. They honored the OSH price. Why don't we continue with this one as the CB thread ??? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. I also have a customized checklist that I keep in the foreflight documents tab. I use it and love it as it is easy to reference. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
