M20J Speed Improvement?
markejackson02 replied to Jayhawk_aviator's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I figure on 155 kts high up and 150 down below 6000' @ 11GPH. Those speeds sound about right. -
Thoughts on revitalizing an under-utilized M20J?
markejackson02 replied to ThorFlight's topic in General Mooney Talk
I bought a 77 J that had been sitting for 7 years. Just went ahead and overhauled the engine even though it had like 800 hours. I would beware of little things like the wires, fuel tanks and such. We had a bunch of little stuff like that. It all worked out and I'm very happy but it does chew through cash initially. -
At the risk of starting the flames all over, why is it that we aren't taught about energy? If a CFI asks me to hold 110 kts at 5000', he is asking me to maintain a certain energy state. Altitude is just a form of potential energy, etc. Would seem to be a lot more straight-forward. Isn't that what they teach fighter pilots?

FWIW, I have a 1977 J and the cylinder temps behave exactly the same. Part of it is being South Texas but I just cruise with the cowl flaps open and CHT seldom get above 375. I can close them at higher altitudes but near the ground with 110 degree temps the CHT will get to 425 in a hurry. I noticed that the later model J's have a cowl flap on the left that has the same bulge as the right. Probably helps with cooling with cowl flaps closed.

Ouch, it was $200 for the sprayer. Funny how you forget what you spent on things..... http://www.triconsprayers.com/product/tri-con-atomized-sprayer-o-1800-1/

You will need to pop about $100 for a sprayer. There is a specialty sprayer that produces the fog. Paint guns or other non-specific sprayers don't produce the needed mist. The equipment from the manufacturers is stupid expensive and really only for professional shops doing many jobs a year. I will look up the url of the wand I had to buy.

The $1,199 version didn't include an antenna, tray/install kit, or battery. How does the G5 derive heading information?
-
Mine did the same. There is a spring in the system which probably needs to be replaced.

Random radar question
markejackson02 replied to markejackson02's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Ouch, have to review my high school physics.... Thanks for the info -
Do all airborne radar sets work on the same frequency? If so, do they interfere with each other? I imagine it's not an issue as they are probably only constructed to receive if they are transmitting. If it could receive without transmitting, would that permit a set to "see" a storm without transmitting using other sets' reflected energy?

They look to me to be pretty closed when closed. Have you adjusted all the length you can on both top and bottom joint connectors. My hangar elf would not mind cutting longer "all thread" rods to get them open more if needed. I adjusted them so that the top and bottom nuts had at least four turns on them, that was about as loose as I was comfortable with. Going to see if there are longer rods available. I note there are three different part numbers in the catalog.

I have tried to rig the cowl flaps to trail 1/2 inch when closed. I have attached photos. This still hasn't solved the cooling issues. Have to open them, fly until things cool off, close them, reopen them, repeat, repeat. I have adjusted the connecting rods to be as long as I can, but it still seems that they are too far closed. How do these photos compare to others positions. (PS I am going to replace the spring to try to be able to use the intermediate position.) Full open Closed

Let's say you have $15k to spend on avionics/radios
markejackson02 replied to nels's topic in General Mooney Talk
Hate to rain on the parade, but 15K would probably just get you a basic GPS install. 9K for the GPS, 2K for a new CDI, and 4-5K for the install. Maybe a little less. -
Cannot lean mixture without opening cowl flaps
markejackson02 replied to Gene's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
FWIW, I have about 75 hours on a newly overhauled engine in a 78 J and have been having a similar issue with the #4 cylinder. Can't keep it under 425 without the cowl flaps open. Puttered with the baffles, RTV around oil cooler, etc. etc. etc. Was resigned to flying with the cowl flaps open at high power/high temps (in South Texas = all the time). Then I changed the oil. Screwed up and dropped the filter while changing it. Oil EVERYWHERE. Probably a quart all over the engine compartment. Went flying later. Oil all out the bottom, all out the sides. To be expected. What I didn't expect was that a ton of oil got blasted out the front of the cowling. After some research, it turns out the cowl flaps on the earlier J models should be rigged to be trailing 1/2 to 1" in the full closed position. According to Bob Kromer, if they are less than 1/2" in trail, the 201 cowling behaves just like the C and E cowlings and actually blows air back out the bottom of the front inlets. I am going to reset all the cowl flaps this weekend and take advantage of the heat down here to test it out and see how it goes. Least the heat will be good for something.- 53 replies

I would remove the battery from the plane, put it on an acid proof mat on the hangar floor and hook the Gill specific Battery Minder up to it. It's what I do when my plane will sit for two weeks. I would change the oil before letting it sit as well.

Haha we'd all be using Android...

Did some reading over the w/e. I was shocked by the numbers. By that I mean the tiny number of units people like Garmin sell. They have sold ~ 150,000 430 units since 1998. Figure 10,000 a year. That's incredibly small compared to an auto or consumer product selling a few million units a year. I was looking around and about 2/3 of the older smaller planes at my field need some sort of upgrade. Guessing low and assuming that 100,000 planes need to be upgraded over the next five years, that would represent a tripling of existing GPS unit sales. Of course not everyone will be installing a full GPS but still, it's little wonder that the used units are holding their value.

That sounds about right although it assumes no snags in the installation. I had mine a few years ago and it cost about $1500 in labor for the whole install.

Garmin 696 Flightplans
markejackson02 replied to markejackson02's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Turns out that fltplan.com will generate these xml files. The format is relatively simple. There's a waypoint table listing each waypoint with coordinates and a route table listing the route-points in sequence. Created one this weekend from KAXH to T82. It doesn't include the airway information or SID/STAR info which doesn't matter with the 696. -
Flying around WOT at 1000' around Houston will allow you to collect a lot of antenna tower guy wires..... :-)

What's with the giant cooling outlets on the side of the cowling? That looks a little worrisome.

Want to buy B-11 ACCU-TRAK II
markejackson02 replied to Gunderbear's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Call them. They are great to work with. Walked me through removing all the servos and they rebuilt them. Total cost was a few hundred plus a couple weekends. They PC works and is very helpful in IFR- 27 replies

Garmin 696 Flightplans
markejackson02 replied to markejackson02's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Haha, it won't crossfeed from the LORAN I still have in the panel. I have the GMX-40 receiver for weather and the 696 rocks. Next year will upgrade to a panel mount GPS, would like the 750. -
Bob Kromer wrote a series of articles a few years back that said for all the normally aspirated Mooneys, WOT and full RPM were the best way to climb, unless noise was a consideration in which case dialing back the prop was okay.

FWIW, I tried to export an existing flight plan to an SD card but it gave me a save error.
