  1. I use a quart every 5-10 hours, depends on the kind of flying. Anything over 6-6.5 qts gets blown out usually fill it when it gets below 6.
  2. Gonna go with the clevis/cotter pin combo. The 2" cotter pins were a bit much.
  3. Does anyone know what size cotter pins are supposed to be installed on the seat track to prevent the seat from coming off? I removed four cotter pins that would hold up anchor chains. Would like something a little easier next time.
  4. New issue. Removed a couple of the hoses. They were so old that they basically crumbled and left hose on the tee fittings. Is there anything recommended to remove the residue after I peel off the big chunks of rubber.
  5. FWIW, the lady at Brittain was super nice. Gates 27043 at auto store 8-10 feet. Will give it a shot.
  6. I need to replace the hoses on the Brittain system behind the panel (original from 1977). 7/32 ID wiper/vacuum hose is the recommended replacement. It is offered in latex or silicone or "synthetic rubber". What are the pros and cons of each?
  7. Get some sheet plexiglass at Lowe's, cut it with a bandsaw, and glue it together to create a box that sits on the floor between the seats. Holds my checklists/iPad/POH with a cup holder and a fire extinguisher holder in the back. I keep a cheapo little tackle box for batteries, extra eyeglasses, ear plugs, fuses, bulbs, etc. etc. etc. Unfortunately my hat rack area matches your description

  9. Way back in the day I was installing one of the first 406 Mhz ELT's. I got to follow along through the certification testing. It took a couple years of expensive testing using private labs, government labs, and outside consultants. If you are only producing a few thousand units, it could easily add several thousand dollars to the price of a unit. I'm sure the G3 units are built just like the 696 units but not having to certify them probably cuts the cost in half.
  10. Bartman came the closest. Turns out there is a heretofore unknown Sigtronics RES-400 music switcher under the panel. No idea it was there. When I had the ADS-B/GPS/intercom installed, the shop wired it up just as it had previously been installed.
  11. While on the ground
  12. Gonna try that tonight. The other looks like a DPDT switch which I find really odd.
  13. Starting problems, Boyd was checking the ignition/key switch for connection/operation. Found these two mystery switches under the panel. No labels, no documentation, nada. Before I disassemble the entire panel to figure out what they are, has anyone else ever seen anything like this? They look pretty new which adds to the puzzle. Just had some avionics installed but the shop said they had no clue what they were.
  14. Like the title.
  15. That sounds really weird that they would cut an aviation fuel with a non-approved substance. Huge liability. Van's strongly discourages the use of slosh sealants/top coats. If used properly they are okay but they require meticulous surface preparation and you have to use the right one with the right sealant or they will behave as you describe. I'm surprised that anyone would use anything other than proseal or the equivalent inside a fuel tank.

  17. FWIW, I've had flight sims since DOS days and the feel part of it has always been missing, especially in pitch. I use it sparingly to practice procedures since it's so clunky and the systems are so poorly modeled. I really enjoy it to get a taste of big iron flying.
  18. I have the very basic GEM (G-1). It was about 1.500 installed. I just like being able to see what is going on. Given the South Texas heat you have to be able to see the CHT as they can easily go to 450 with cowl flaps closed if you're not paying attention. If I had to do it again, I would get a G2 or G3 that can log data and could replace the older Hoskins fuel totalizer.
  19. I do use distilled water. I try to fly at least once a week. The battery minder may be overkill. If this one turns out to be dead (will check tomorrow), maybe try the Concorde.
  20. Is there any issue with the battery box? My current one has two sets of ridges that look like they are designed to hold the battery caps in place.
  21. It is the Gill specific BatteryMinder unit. I believe it is the S2. I used to use the aviation specific unit that allowed you to pick battery type and amperage. It was constantly resetting itself so I would come back to the AGM battery setting at 2 amps. Finally tossed it which was annoying given the $250 price tag.
  22. I have a Gill G-35 battery in a 201. The hangar in which the plane sits is regularly 100-120 degrees this time of year. I keep the water topped up and use a battery minder. Is there anything else I can do to keep the battery from getting torched?
  23. My suggestion is to move to South Texas where low oil temperatures are never an issue.
  24. Lasar does indeed have them.
  25. I'd like to install a co-pilot PTT switch with a silk screened label next to it. Does anyone have any idea where I could find the 1" by 2" control wheel thumbplate? The manual part number is 917024-033 but I don't see them online anywhere. I'd like to get one powder coated with a label if possible.
