  1. Running it on the step?
  2. I'll do that. Thanks.
  3. While the prop is off I changed oil and fixed some cowling stuff. Noticed the metal baffle above the #2 cylinder is cracked. The Mooney part manual is a little unclear about this part number. I'm guessing the part number is 600368-005 and the whole assembly is 600368-501? Are these normally available as a lone part? I may just create two doubling plates from 0.025 and rivet them into place.
  4. Has there been any news on using the G5 as an HSI with non-Garmin radios?
  5. The prop was overhauled about three years ago. It was leaking grease so it went back to be resealed in Dec 16. It was re-installed in Jan'17 and has flown about 30 hours before this happened. Might well be what happened. It was leaking grease.
  6. Just curious. Is it normal for our older planes to have a two month repair job every 3-4 years? Seems like that often something needs to come off to be overhauled which takes 6-8 weeks.
  7. I can see that grabbing the very tip of the blade and pulling which could bend the prop a couple inches would be bad. But pulling the plane by the two roots can't be that bad or it would be raining broken props. The thing does literally pull the airplane through the air.
  8. The prop is going off to be inspected/tested/repaired if possible. The engine will be removed and the mounts tested and inspected. No insurance on the prop. According to the propeller guy, they see a failure like this every 3-4 years. It is usually induced by someone pulling the plane by the tips of the blades. It can produce enough leverage to pop all the retaining rings out of the hub. I haven't ever hauled the damn thing by the tips so we will see what they say.
  9. Snap ring broke or came off. Prop comes off and will go back for inspection/repair.
  10. Thank you all for talking me off the ledge. I'll follow up with what we find with the propeller. Assuming nothing catastrophic happened with the engine I will get a new prop. Wife will probably ask Boyd to make sure I didn't deliberately loosen something to get a new prop.
  11. I too am glad it happened on the ground. I am guessing that the insurance will not cover any of it since there is no damage other than the prop (and maybe engine). I will check on Monday.
  12. It is. S/N 24-0048. Basically an F with the new cowl.
  13. Surprised that the scrap value is that low. If that is the case, it will be more palatable to repair the plane. This is the third time the plane has tried to kill me. First was a mag failure that resulted in an emergency landing in a rainstorm. It ultimately took over a year to resolve. Then the landing gear didn't come down. Now this. Maybe someone is trying to tell me something.....
  14. The blade didn't come out of the hub, just all the hardware that attached to the hub. The blade can be rotated in pitch without resistance. I'm guessing there was a retaining ring that broke or came out and everything else slid out.
  15. Threw a prop blade. Prop was overhauled ~3 yrs ago, leaked so resealed last year. Started to leak last week. Started the plane on the ramp and it shook like a mother. Shut down and all the hardware sealing/controlling the blade was either spread on the ramp or inside the spinner. The blades shanks are inside the hub, but I was able to rotate the blade pitch 90 degrees with no resistance. Little reluctant to just put on a new prop without tearing the engine down and inspecting the mounts it shook that hard.
  16. Is there a way to ascertain the scrap value of a 1978 201? I may need to choose soon and want to have some idea of the alternative. Airframe is in good shape. Engine is recently overhauled although it may need a teardown inspection.
  17. I use the Stratux with wifi and the battery pack will last 8-12 hours so plenty long. My iPad will last 4-5 hours with Foreflight open and wireless ADS-B in. Usually enough, but I can always plug into the cigar lighter.
  18. The announcement says the G5 can be used as a DG/CDI if couple to an "approved" device. Have they said anything about what is an approved device? Garmin only or avidyne/king/collins, etc?
  19. Right now I have an old Sigtronics/King system but it is being replaced by a PMA450 from PS Engineering soon. Very interesting. The PTT switches in that wiring schematic are wired from the Pilot Mic Lo (ring connector) to the Pilot Mic PTT (tip connector) while the barrel connector carries the audio. Pressing the PTT closes a circuit that connects those two wires which I assume tells the PMA to transmit. So I can see how a hand held mike would work in that case.
  20. Scratching my head. Wanted to install a PTT switch on the co-pilot yoke. I see the wire (on the pilot side) goes from the microphone jack connection to the PTT switch and then to the intercom DB-9 connector. So I assumed pushing (closing) the PTT switch causes the intercom to channel the audio from the mike to the appropriate radio. How come if I put a hand held mike in the same jack, and press the transmit key, it transmits? The PTT switch is open in that case and I don't see how the audio is sent to the radio. Forgive my rudimentary understanding of electronics.
  21. To be clear, you can replace the attitude indicator but you have to retain your altimeter, airspeed indicator, and T&B. You're not allowed to use the G5 as primary for those functions.
  22. Upgrade failed so the unit is now a brick.
  23. They are a huge PITA. I searched for my 1978 M20J and found nothing. Pretty much have to buy and refurbish a used one or build your own.
  24. Is this an English thing? Keep Calm and Fly On? :-)
  25. You never know. Flying from Beaumont to Houston Sugar Land a few years ago. A Cherokee hit the power lines south of the runway at SGR, blew out all the power at the airport. Had to land at HOU and sit for three hours until they opened SGR again.
