  1. Any MSC would work. But Sheryl from LASAR is often monitoring MooneySpace... http://www.lasar.com/default.asp These mild steal pieces have been known to rust, most deeply at the bent area. All the way through in the bend. It starts with a drip, and more over a year, then a gallon, then you realize what's going on and What the requirement is. It will only leak if you leave it outside. The rust that you are seeing, and will find when you sump the tank, is hazardous... My confusion was exacerbated by a previous owner replacing parts that were not Mooney specific. I paid a lot for new caps first, and they were on a 45 degree angle when they tried to close. I took it to an MSC, where word of mouth sold my challenges quickly... Overall a pair of necks, and matching caps, some sealant, rivets and a mechanic with tools. Probably doesn't take that long. Looks like you have done the tough part already... Make sure the new necks vent properly, check the full fuel level before setting out on that fist long cross country. Best regards, -a-
  2. Welcome to the Board, Andrew. Interesting first topic... Best regards, -a-
  3. The nice lady from the MSC can probably help out. They are now made out of SS. My '65C's last pain was those rusted fill necks... How much water are you getting? Be aware that the rusty bits will show up all the way to the fuel screen at the valve. After that, there is a screen prior to the carburetor that should be checked/cleaned... Keep in mind that tiny bits can clog a carburetor jet. Best regards, -a-
  4. Has "fill to the tabs" lost it's meaning? Or Mooneys don't have really obvious "tabs" I'm going with "fill to the bottom of the collar or neck" -a-
  5. www.aecp.pt Couldn't access your website... -a-
  6. There is no linear relationship to weight and the ability to safely conduct a flight. It makes sense to fly within the published envelope. For those that fly outside the envelope, ie plane deliveries. There is equipment, training and documentation to allow for that. For the guy that wanted paperwork to fly the J at a higher limit, there is a process to collect the hardware, training and documentation if that is really desired. I would expect that the envelope of flight for an M20J is fully defined. So adding horsepower, a Missle, is possible. An IO390, interesting, but will it be enough? Could you sell the STC in Europe? Somebody added 30hp to the Ovation line and got an STC for it. Call it an O3 or a Screamin' Eagle.... Best regards, -a-
  7. I noticed the D registration and was wondering how later in the day he became Portugese.... Either way, I've known most of the players in this conversation for years. There is only one really new guy. So, Welcome really new guy. This is one of the most open convesations people can have. Considering we are speaking across the globe about a safety topic. And probably doing it with a keyboard and possibly using English as a second language... Pilots, insurance guy, instructors, engineers, lawyers, Mooney Fans... Laws of physics are the same no matter what country they are practiced in... Great open conversation. Welcome to MooneySpace! Best regards, -a-
  8. Cleaning out the intake of small block Chevy, yes. Aviation, I'm following with Scott above. The recycle of exhaust gases improves fuel mileage, but makes a terrible mess behind the butterfly valve. Of course cleaning doesn't happen by just putting cleaner in a gas tank. That's my opinion on small block chevy automotive engines... Chances of cleaning the sealant out of your fuel tank is probably higher than you want. Cleaning years of blue goo out of the intake tubes is a worthwhile effort if you have carburetor/M20C. Check with your mechanic before proceeding. Best regards, -a-
  9. Mike, The ratio only makes a suggestion and positive proof is what is required. Suggestions aren't enough for the average pilot with average skills to "go" when overloaded. As you point out, with identical airframes, would increasing my HP automatically increase my GW? Increased HP doesn't automatically increase GW, it could....with an STC??? How much additional HP comes with the IO390? Any? Adding a Hartzell Scimitar prop? It's better to drive the fat Caddy on that odd day. Especially when out west in the mountains, on hot days, or with short unpaved runways. PIC has some pretty important responsibility. Best regards, -a-
  10. EB, Gross weight of an M20J is listed at 2,900# 300# over gross, as José mentioned, 3,200#... Clearly the wgt/HP ratio doesn't clearly tell us what WILL fly, but it sure INDICATES (as José pointed out) what MAY NOT... Patrick is speaking to us clearly on this one... Best regards, -a-
  11. Astel, I'm trying to enable the conversation... If it's a safety issue, let's not promote it. If it's not a safety issue in one area of the country, then let's discuss it with the required detail. I'm in the camp of more HP is better than less. Putting it in perspective... O3: 310 HP/ 3,358 # = 1/ 10.8 O1: 280 HP/ 3,358 = 1/ 12.0 Eagle1: 240 HP/ 3,358 = 1/ 14.0 "Overloaded" 201: 200 HP/ 3,200# = 1/ 16.0. (this is not as good as a Piper Cherokee) C4 Corvette: 300 HP / 3239# = 1/ 10.8 2013 SRX crossover by Cadillac: 308 HP/ 5467# = 1/ 17.8 Cherokee 140: 150 HP/ 2,150# = 1/ 14.3 If we don't like the Cherokee performance with a 14.3 wgt/HP ratio, then overloading the 201 to the level of a 252 stands out something like a Crossover Cadillac on the runway at sea level! People with an Eagle are known to spend a fist full of AMU to bump up to the O3 performance of the Screamin' Eagle. Let me know if I made any math errors. YMMV. Best regards, -a-
  12. What would it take to do this as a community? The nice folks at MidWest Mooney, as well as others, are knowledgable on the paperwork process, as well as most of the engineering requirements. What would it take, or how big would the collection need to be, to build and submit the proper documents? If MooneySpace develops an STC? Who owns it and where does it reside? Again, the idea is to further the knowledge and benefits of the community, not making a profit. Thinking out loud, -a-
  13. I am slowly working on a program to get a WAAS unit and GPSS for IFR procedures. It will be an upgrade for my existing KL90B. -a-
  14. Congrats! -a-
  15. Your going to need that TWIN engine Mooney... Does that have six seats??? -a-
  16. I think you owe the dad a big steak, since he saved your bacon. First that I have heard of this type of failure. Best regards, -a-
  17. Alan, Why the KLN 90B? -a-
  18. I like the idea of BT for calling in a clearance. I am still considering a battery powered one in the meantime. Best regards, -a-
  19. Scott, How's the selection process going so far? Garmin seems to be the only available WAAS GPS supplier for vertical guidance in place of ILS. Old BK equipment, nonWAAS, is lower cost and easy to use. Great for non precision approaches and IFR training. Best regards, -a-
  20. Find the thread on kids and planes. It has been running since the site was new. Things you may learn... Kids fall asleep when the gear goes up Child seats don't fit well in the back of an M20E, my kids learned it in a C. Ear protection can be found at the hardware store Blankets are appreciated (continental/united make nice ones for first class customers) Plan on cleaning up after the first flight in turbulence, descending through the last, bumpy 3000' takes time No matter what happens, the flight will be a lot shorter than the driving equivalent. What cape locations are you planning? Welcome to the board... Best regards, -a-
  21. Doing a search will get you plenty of recommendations for starters. There is one version that is stronger than the other... My experience lead me to cleaning the Bendix on my C. Lasted longer than the generator which was decades... -a-
  22. That doesn't look like oil that would be held back by a separator... That looks like something more important... Unless you keep filling to the max, knowing a quart will be pressed out of the vent? Best regards, -a-
  23. Mike, They are helpful technology for more sensitive engines with a large GAMI spread. My O1 had a low spread last I measured it. Have you measured yours? The GAMI folks are good at helping you to determine whether you need it or not. Expect not, but do check incase something else is not working correctly. Continental IO550s have balanced air and fuel systems in Ovations and Eagles... Best regards, -a-
  24. Washington DC can't keep up with what needs to be done for the masses. Never mind focus on the small issue caused by aviation dispersing LL in the atmosphere. Since Katrina arrived, DC has been focusing on more important issues. Price of car gas went above $3/gal. for everyone, and stayed there. Environmental damage by Katrina alone dwarfs the LL issue. Clean burning LNG is not being mandated or supported for long distance trucks and trains. Unsupported, available technology. Shale oil can't move to existing processing facilities, while DC is blamed for not organizing the building of pipelines. There is no ready solution For 100LL. DC is busy with clearly, more important issues. DC's job now, is to hold borrowing rates low, until unemployment drops to a significantly lower rate. Where are we on ADSB? A technical solution is readily available, but won't be mandated in DC immediately, because of financial hardship that it causes? Pushing the LL issue is not picking on the 1%, they fly jets. It's picking on private pilots in general, while claiming an environmental advantage that is dwarfed by more important issues. LL is officially a sleeping dog. It won't go away, but it's not DC's most critical challenge either. Employment Healthcare Education Energy independence Housing Food Safety Aging Population Clean up after Katrina Clean up after Sandy . . . Improve safety using ADSB. . . . Find the guy responsible for the murder of Aton Paetz. . . . Fix LL challenge . . Support the growth of the pilot population . . We're pretty far down the list for support and/or pressure. -a-
  25. Welcome aboard P. An '02 O2, nice!!! Best regards, -a-
