  1. In 2011 I installed a SkyTec 149 NL in my 1965 E Model Mooney. It has worked beautifully until now. However, all I am getting now are firewall solenoid clicks and not a sound from the starter. I have load checked the Concorde 35RX battery and voltages at every point. I even took 12v positive directly to the Starter lug. Sparks but no sound or smell. I would like thoughts short of pulling the Starter which is a lot of work. I have talked to SkyTec.
  2. This model is a $379 new item on Spruce and was working fine when removed at my recent annual. I'm selling for $160 + ship. This is the super light weight (7.8lb) version. Why did I remove it? My logs and W&B only indicated that I had an 18lb Prestolite starter, last overhauled in 1998. The part number of this starter was not visible under my baffling. I "upgraded" to a B&C starter to save weight and promote future reliability, only to find I had this much newer Skytec installed upon removal. I've no idea when it was actually installed since no log entry was made, but my new top of the line B&C starter doesn't really seem to crank any stronger than this Skytec did.
  3. My starter is failing to engage, so I spray it with carb cleaner a couple of times and followed up with dry silicon spray. Seems better but just did it again...is this a starter that is failing or should I hit it some more?
  4. So getting my Mooney M20C started in cold Wx is a royal pain in the six. I have engine preheating nixed for the moment, but am still struggling with the battery. If I keep it on a tender it works fine, but putting the battery box together is very difficult for me. If I leave it without a tender for even a week I haven't the power to get started. I'd leave part of a tender hanging out the battery box, but I doubt there's enough room to get anything out of there. I used to have the exact same problem with my Cherokee, but the battery was under the back seat. The voltage drop was pretty big. That said leaving part of a tender hanging out was no big deal. The battery in the Mooney is in the engine bay, not a good place for anything to hang out. Is this normal? It was for Cherokees, what about vintage Mooneys? Is my battery kaput? Is there a trick to putting the battery box back together?
  5. As my starter is somewhat lacking performance, i want to replace it during the annual with another. I am leaning towards Hartzell X - drive or E - drive, but there seems to be a fitting issue with them (specifically the E -drive). My bird is an M 20 C 1964. Unfortunately I cannot go over and look, as we are currently on two different continents. But as I would like to pre-order this from Spruce so I can keep my downtime to a minimum during my leave and get some more flying done. Same question applies to the Tach cable. i know it is kinked and needs replacement, but is it 36 Inch long or 46 Inch. Again stock M20 C. Any input welcome. Cheers Norbert
  6. Make me an offer. These came off our 1966 M20E. They were working fine and are guaranteed to work or your money back (less shipping). http://n2690w.blogspot.com/2015/02/alternatorregulator-off-of-m20e-working.html

  8. These parts are from my 1984 M20J engine conversion. The alternator came on my new IO-360-A3B6 from Lycoming. It's brand new never used. Hartzell Engine Tech. ALZ-8521LS 70amp 12V $250.00 The starter is my old starter, never had a problem with it. I did replace the bendix a few years ago. Prestolite 12V MZ-4222 $100.00 Call Mark 925-200-3858 Thank you to everyone on this forum for all the help with my engine conversion. Mark me an offer.
  9. I often find myself attempting to crank the aircraft with nothing happening. If I get out and turn the sprocket on the starter a few times with a long screw driver the aircraft will start when I turn the key. Has anyone experienced this before? Is there a permanent fix for this without having to buy a new starter? I sprayed some contact cleaner on the access window at the bottom of the starter and this did not work.
  10. Starter drug just a little on startup this morning, but the engine roared to life after 2 blades. Just took a quick flight for some VOR work and the shot the ILS back in, under VFR conditions... Taxi back to the hangar was uneventful, but when I shut the engine down, the prop stopped rather abruptly. I was fairly certain that I knew what was wrong before I ever unbuckled my seatbelt. Sure enough, the starter was still engaged on the flywheel. Fortunately, it didn't look like any damage was done to the teeth on the flywheel, but I'm fairly sure that I need a new starter. I've read the name "sky-tech" more than a few times on this board, and was looking at using them for the replacement. Any good pireps out there? Pros / Cons?
