  1. The step should be kept for those passenger unfamiliar or of limited walking ability or kids. Falling into the ramp can ruin your day, keep it, is there for a reason. José
  2. Most plane owners with the Monroy tanks use the factory installed fuel totalizer to determine total fuel onboard. On the C, E, F, J, and K models the outboard fuel sender will remain peg to the top while the long range tanks are getting depleted. So you can not rely on the senders when having more than 85 gallons. The fuel totalizer relies on fuel flow and not fuel level in the mains, so is more accurate. Just program the totalizer for max. fuel for your plane. José
  3. It depends on the altitude that you are flying. On my last crossing from CYYR to BIRK I never had to use the HF but I was at FL190. If you fly lower you will need HF for this route. For the CYYT to LPAZ you will need HF no matter at what altitude you are. In Canada remote areas you get your clearance via HF on the ground so trailing wire HF antennas are impractical. Close to the artic circle latitude and above there is no SATCOM coverage so HF is a must. When properly installed HF provides reliable airborne communications. New York Oceanic has dual polarization antennas that eliminates the old fading problems of HF. José
  4. The space is too small due to the gear and flight controls linkages for any reasonable amount of fuel. José
  5. For the southern route CYYT - LPAZ you will need HF radio. Here is one of my setups. 706 in Mooney4.pdf You can also route the antenna wire along the vertical and horizontal fin without the need of the springs. José
  6. If you go via CYYR BGBW BIRK and northern part of England your longest leg would be 700nm. But strong consideration should be given to the winds conditions. Winds on this route (30 to 100Kts) can affect your range, specially on your way back to the US. A back seat 55 gallons drum will easily fit and provide enough fuel. Mooneys like the Ovation with long range tanks (130 gal total) will easily do CYYR - BIRK or CYYT - LPAZ direct. José
  7. Oil pressure at idle is very much related to bearings condition. As the engine RPM is increased the oil pressure increases to the point were the relief valve is set. José
  8. Check for worn thread before installing mag back. You may want to use Loctite 271 on the screws next time. José
  9. Luke, on the next cold start 1. Set to max throttle. 2. Mixture full rich. 3. Prime engine with electric fuel pump. If pressure is just barely above red line the engine may not start. 4. After 3 seconds close mixture and turn pump off. 5. Set throttle to halfway. 6. Crank engine. At first sign of engine combustion push mixture to full rich. 7. After start set throttle to idle. I had a similar problem at KAGC in winter but not a KFXE. Replaced the electric fuel pump and now I was able to start at 8F on the first crank turn. If the electric pump is weak you may be able to start the engine by having the electric pump on while cranking the engine and opening the mixture slowly. José
  10. Unlike on hard surface take off run on grass can significantly increase with weight, leading to possible gear damage. Make sure the tires are fully inflated and keep the yoke pull back to alleviate stress and avoid a nose dig with possible flip over. José
  11. Where are you going to park one of these contraptions?. To be competitive with the automobile it needs to fit in my car garage or any underground parking area. You can not even park it on the side of the road. And most roof tops are inclined. Maybe you can drop passengers on a rope. And when you get to your destination you have to wait for recharge, while in a car you just fill up (if needed) and go. And if one of those props fail you go down quickly. While in car a flat tire is a minor event. I think I will keep my M20J and make use of the crew car at the FBO. José
  12. The problem with the cabin lights is that they are connected directly to the battery bypassing the master switch. I connected mine to the stall warning buzzer +line at the front ceiling switch. This only allows the lights to be turned on when the master is on. José
  13. Karson I noticed that you mistaken the gear alert for the stall alert. I had the same problem and replaced the factory buzzers for a voice warning device. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/voicegearalert.php?clickkey=2217090 The warnings are easy to understand since they come through the headsets. José
  14. Woow!!! you do #2 on it. Post pictures. José
  15. I installed a UBG-16 myself on my M20J and never had a problem. And my #1 COM is 20 Watts (GNS 530AW) and the HF is 100 Watts. The interference problem with the COM could be related to the antenna location of each COM. If COM 1 uses the forward antenna then it is likely RF is leaking into the UBG-16 through the plastic cowling into the CHT/EGT wiring or through the plastic glareshield. Try contact cleaner on the UBG-16 connector. José
  16. I had the same problem in Pittsburgh at 8F last Xmas. Sprayed WD-40 with the nozzle into seal and after 5 minutes the door opened. A tip from one of the locals is to spray WD-40 all around the seal before flight or just before winter. José
  17. Try MEK for your teeth, it really whiten them.
  18. If the ram air inlet is open engine roughness is likely in icing conditions. Rain-X stays longer on the wing than WD-40.
  19. I am impress with your memory. I found out that the Mooney can tolerate ice pretty well but the speed drops. Something that may help you on your next icing adventure is to apply Rain-X for plastic on the wing leading edge and propeller. José
  20. Wonder what does Avidyne do with the old GNS they get on the exchange. Do they sell them anywhere like on eBay? Does Avidyne has a senior discount? José
  21. I made this tail hold down by screwing a screw bolt onto the concrete to hold down a piece of wood that anchors to the tail bracket. Easy to install and remove by 65+ pilots.
  22. I removed the switch completely, never used and never saw its utility. It was also causing momentary A/P disconnects. José
  23. Apply Rain-X for plastic http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/rainx09-05319.php?msclkid=cb4c2e12386a136f7b4974b4d3653123&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=CPCS - Shopping - NB - Desktop&utm_term=4580977758698486&utm_content=All Products on the lens before flight. José
  24. Gear up warning buzzer can easily be mistaken by a stall warning, specially when turning base to final. The voice warning provides a distinctive indication of the type of warning. José
  25. I have one of these voice gear alert, and found it to be a must to have. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/voicegearalert.php?clickkey=46870 José
