Got a few things done on a nice saturday
Hank replied to TheTurtle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
My window says "Do not open above 150 mph," but I rarely open it until after my feet are on the brakes on rollout and often after I clear the runway. I close it at runup and leave it closed for takeoff unless I have to wait (just like the door). anybody ever open their window in the air? -
There's good and bad in AoA and ASI. But as mentioned, final speed of 75 light is considerably different then when heavy. Thats why I go slower when light, and I don't float much on the runway. Didn't bother watching the video, I never bank steeply in the pattern but do slip on final when necessary. But for now, there's too much fusing and squabbling, so I'm out here . . .

I agree with whoever said Newton makes it fly, Bernoulli makes it fly efficiently.

Yep. My PPL checkride was at a Class C, not as busy as S. Cal., and it was right in 1.2 or 1.3. We didn't go toothed training area, we flew the first couple of checkpoints in the XC he had me plan out, started on the diversion (initial turn, find exact course on sectionals fine tune plane; then play with Whiz Wheel to find time and fuel required to get there). Then started maneuvers, did an engine out, etc., headed back for a couple of landings. Overall, it was a good experience, and my stress level decreased continuously throughout the ride. The DPE was never argumentative nor adversarial, and he asked questions for most of the time. Maybe it was more conversational in the air. Better luck the next time, Sammy!

See you there! We'll all recognize you when you speak . . . Last year was a great time,,hopefully the weather will be nicer this year and I won't need to fly the GPS approach way out over the bay. I'd like to SEE it this time!

The efficient, Mooney way is to use both!

I find leaning hard on the ground (enough that I have to enrichen to taxi uphill or pull out of the grass into pavement) keeps me from having to burn off plugs. This is immediately after engine start, and again in the landing rollout. Got so used to doing this in my Mooney that when I did it in a 172, the engine died and I coasted off the runway . . . It's very rare for me to ever burn off a plug.

Thanks, Gus. That's a good look at many different bad endings, with a little food for thought thrown in.

Yep. Mortgage interest is deductible, but we pay capital gains when we sell if over $250,000 in gains. Used to be in all gains, and had to keep receipts on all improvements to remove them from the taxable gain. What does land & homes a two-hour drive out from Toronto sell for in comparison?

Your turbos didn't completely fail. I generally get about 20" at 10,000 msl, and my one trip to 15,000 msl (18,800 DA), I don't remember the MP but I was step climbing the last several thousand feet. Doubtless, though, it was an uncomfortable experience. Glad everything seems to be okay now.

It's very much location dependent. This ad also says that the house needs work . . . Where I live out in the country, this amount will buy a 3 bed / 2 bath house ~2000 ft^2 on a few acres. Or an empty 1/4 acre lot on the lake, if you can find one for sale. In the northeast, it won't buy much if anything. I had a serious job interview 30 minutes from Newark Airport, homes in decent (safe) neighborhoods, a little smaller than this, another hour away, were $350,000 and up. Since I was given the choice, I took it and moved from WV back to the South.

Sounds like you made the most if a really crappy start! It's good to practice in winds that you don't like, because when you travel, there's never a guarantee in what the wind will do at your destination. I have made very few landings on 150' wide runways. Mostly I've been based where the runway is 75' wide, and often visit places that are either 75' or 50' wide. This afternoon, after a 2-hour flight away from ugly weather, I landed uphill on a rough 2770 x 30' runway, but thankfully the winds were pretty light (~6 knots). The narrowest place I've been was 2400 x 24' on a Flight .review--gotta watch those CFIs, they're sneaky like that! Keep working it. You've made great progress. I was very antsy and pushing for my PPL checkride, but all that did was stress both my CFI and myself. Look how long you've been working on this . . . Look how long you've wanted this . . . Will an extra week or two really make a difference? Will you still have that great feeling when you are done and your little piece of plastic with Orville & Wilbur's pictures on it? At that time, you will decide what weather conditions are suitable to fly in, there are no endorsements from anyone. The responsibility is real. It hit me taking my wife out later the same day of my checkride, it was up to me to get us both safely back down. Keep us posted! I like your writing style.

Wow! That's cheap! As a fresh PPL with 62 hours, zero complex and half owner, I paid $3100 for my first year . . . July 2007. Rates have come down since then. I'm thankful that mine fell another 12% this year.

Today, coming across N. Ga. and SC at 7500, temps were in the high 60s to low 70s, well above ISA temps. I only have the one factory probe, but it was below the top of the green line in my C (mentioned above as notorious for running not). I was at about 70% power and 146 knots TAS (love that screen in the 430!). No pictures, I left my phone at home.

Looks good! Did you just find someone local with a vinyl cutter? Question: what's up with your canopy cover? I guess that's what the straps in the 2nd & 3rd photos are. -
Jerry-- Nice trip! I dodged Hermine the easy way, postponing departure from yesterday until, this morning. Beautiful flying from Alabama into the Carolinas, once away from south Atlanta.

I'll be there in three weeks . . . Coming back just in time for Summit IV in Panama City.

I put my 1970 Owners Manual there, yours should be the same. While you're there, grab a copy of the latest 1977 version, too. Mine has pretty thorough Performance Tables. Check for Service Manual, too.

We are allowed under Owner Maintenance to remove the brakes so that the wheels may be removed, split, tires & tubes replaced, bearings removed and repacked. But we aren't allowed to replace the brake pads . . . unless working under A&P supervision. Doesn't make much sense to me, but what do I know???

You've got a point out above. PM him for details, and make a visit. Ain't nothing like getting it done and buying your own plane.

My insurance fell from ~$1600 to ~$1100 when I finished my IR ($65K hull, 1,000,000/100,000, zero deductible motion/not in motion. Then I relocated and changed to Falcon, and it's been going down every year, now well under $900. The first thing I noticed about your quotes is the limits are half of what I'm used to to seeing . . . But your rates are higher. Call Falcon.

In 1814, I took a little trip I went with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip. We took along some bacon and we took along some beans, And we beat the bloody British at the town of New Orleans. OH, we fired our guns and the British kept acomin. There's not so many now as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began arunnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. --with apologies to Johnny Horton, who sings it much better than I write it. Google it, it's a great performance, I have ihis greatest hits on CD, even though he was famous before I was born. Over here, we call it the War of 1812, I forget what ya'll call it over there. Among other things, the Red Coats successfully invaded Washington, D.C. and burned the White House, right after the President evacuated with his family in a big hurry. We eventually won, otherwise we'd have returned to the unwelcoming embrace of the British Empire. I think it was George III's (or his son's) attempt to reclaim the colonies who had separated thirty five years before. But I'm a little hazy on the finer points of American History.

If my spinner wasn't polished, I'd paint it up like that!

AUO is a nice field, with a beautiful new FBO. The original one across the field, used by students, will soon be torn down and a new one built further from the runway. As a transient, you may be able to park by the FBO. Longer visits may sentence you to the tiedowns past the fuel pump. I was there when I first moved back, while waiting on hangars at all area fields.

Mike--always looking for pireps of good EFB packages! I've not jumped onto the iPad-on-the-yoke bandwagon yet (as I type this on my mini Retina), but do periodically use Avare at home on my aging Samsung tablet, and once or twice on my phone in flight when my trip went just off the edge if the sectional I had.
