  1. Gatlinburg airport is nice, but the traffic on the roads . . . . . . .
  2. I noticed a significant change in CG and rotation with two adults, half tanks and two cases of oil in the baggage area. Even my buddy riding with me commented on it.
  3. I hope to be there, but this fall is incredibly busy!
  4. Not while the FAA's mandate is Safety at All Costs . . . . .
  5. Hmmm . . . . I remember "East is Odd," but that's altitude. Then of course there is ANDS, "Accelerate North, Decelerate South" which is compass stuff, and true--look how many tourists we get down here, everyone decelerates and stops!
  6. But environmental activists don't like dams (they bother the fish) or wind (they kill birds), to say nothing of the horrors of nuclear anything. Of course, they are against burning petrofuels, too . . . Have yet to hear what large-scale power sources they approve of . . . .
  7. They will build a nest wherever they can get to. Used to find them inside my grandfather's workshop, door normally closed. No idea if they live in Jersey or not.
  8. My panel is steam gages, so the odds of losing it all are pretty long. I had almost 300 hours in my C when starting seriously on Instruments. The CFII would periodically fail some instruments with paper and have me fly back and land over the trees. When she peaked behind the paper from time to time, she was always happy that whichever gage was pointing at the right number (or close enough). Practice, fly a lot, learn your plane and your power / configuration settings and the sight picture. If too much drops out, go somewhere longer, maybe with a tower. Have you done a practice No Gyro approach lately (just in case)?
  9. Just know your 1.3Vx range. For my C, its 70-75 mph depending on the weight for that landing. Marauder's friend back on p.1 did a good job of leveling off above the runway and bleeding off excess speed, but at 2 of the 3 airports I've based at, he'd of been in the weeds or trees . . . I only have one landing video (but just bought a camera, look for more soon!), and it's had previois exposure here. Search vimeo for "Mooney landing khtw" and two pop up--the one my wife made from the right seat, and one that someone took from the ramp with a bit of gusty crosswind. Inside, you can see that my wheels touch on the 3rd stripe just after the stall horn sounds. The field is 3000' long, and I had to give a bump of extra throttle to clear the trees on short final. The only times I ever reached the displaced threshhold at the other end (13 stripes total) was rolling out for following traffic. On my flight review this year, I made a rather fast no-flap landing at my new, unobstructed 3150' field, and didn't roll out to the end. Maybe 90 mph or so? Learn your plane, how it handles, how to descend and how to get yourself to your desired airspeed at various weights and in varying conditions, because you never know. The nice controllers at Tornado n Fun had me sidestep to 9R, "the wide runway," and fly in ground effect over a mile before I could set down just past the crossing runway. Fly a lot, practice and don't accept poor results. It will bite you one day . . . . .
  10. and expensive. And not certified on many planes . . . I'm not interested in a 182 . . . . .
  11. It would help us all if you posted your exact starting procedure. I've never had this problem in 11 years of C-model ownership, except for a single backfire when I was experiencing chronic starting problems.
  12. Me, too . . . . .
  13. Stainless comes in two flavors: 300-series is nonmagnetic; 400-series is magnetic and can be hardened. Both are somewhat more "sticky" than regular carbon steel and must be cut slower, with shallower cuts. Good luck with the next one!
  14. I've had my Halos for seven or eight years, all original except I replaced the silicone tips with a spare pair that came with it. I hate fiam earplugs--they are hot, and if you don't roll them and insert them just right, they ooze out. So I wear the silicone plugs that come with them, and I wear silicone earplugs at work instead of the foamies there, too. On the other hand, earbuds hurt when I eear them for any length of time (more than a few minutes). The Halo speakers are on thenwire band behind your head; Clarity Aloft uses earbuds with additional soundproofing around tbem to reduce ambient noise. For durability, I wore the Halos while driving a tractor mowing beside the runway for a couple of years, and also swveral days while cleaning and repajnting the runway numbers. My handheld was in the cargo pocket on my pants. There is still some white paint on the cord. Yes, the cord looks thin and weak, but in addition to the above, I have tried to exit the pkane several times (many times?) While still wearing them, which snatches them sideways off of my head. Ain't had no problems yet . . . I'd let her test mine (I bought additional spare silicon tips for $3/pair), but I gave away all of the foam tips in two sizes that came with them. Is SUS close to Lower Alabama? No, we are out of the path of Tropical Storm Gordon tonight.
  15. I've never added up everything since I started flight lessons in '06, and I'm not starting now! That said, all I had my first couple of years was owner-assisted annuals. Half price for the assist, another half for my partner, the first one cost me $288. Nothing but up from there, but only two have run multiple AMUs (one included a surprise new muffler, there was a hole in the bottom I could put my fist in . . . . .
  16. That's genuine owner produced right there! Looks good. Shortening it would be simple, but requires a die to clean up the threads at the end whether you turn it, mill it or grind it.
  17. Check out this other thread right now, too:
  18. What color windows do you have? Open the storm window and stixk a piece of clean, white printer paper through it. Compare how the paper looks through the window itself to looking at it through the open storm window, the color shift will be obvious.
  19. @Fred_2O, as you noticed our search isn't the best. Its often better to use google and include Mooneyspace as a search term, maybe "mooneyspace side window replacement" for starters . . . Good luck with the job. Many people like the SC gray. Clear is nice, but can be very hot, and one green window with everything else gray will look mucho strange.
  20. MAPA has some articles by Bob Kromer about the turbo models. For general education, check D Max and Don Kaye's websites. It may be worthwhile to see if Don Kaye wilk be in tbis side of the country anytime soon. And read up on everything @jlunseth has posted about turbo engine management.
  21. My PPL in 2006-07 totalled around 5K; checkride was at 52 hours. The 172 was $90/hour, CFI $30, with 10% off if I bought 10-hour blocks. DPE was ~$350? Five weeks post-PPL, I wrote a check for half of the Mooney and a huge insurance check. Second year insurance fell by half, no change 3rd year; then got serious and finished Instruments in 2011 (DPE had gone up to $450) and saved another third on insurance. Meanwhile, bought out my partner so she's all mine . . . . The joys of getting into aviation as an adult with a good job, a mortgage and a healthy 401k. I was working as a Development Engineer for a medical device manufacturer, going to night school to get my Masters of Engineering and flying on weekends. Have no interest in being an airline pilot, the road warrior life doesn't appeal to me. Maybe because I moved so often growing up? When I finished my PPL in my mid-40s, I was in Town #22; now I'm in #24 and hope it's the last.
  22. Printed metal parts are indeed porous, that's why they are sintered after printing. This eliminates the matrix and shrinks the part ~25%. Shrinkage should be taken care of in the process, it's not something you need to worry about.
  23. I've got a picture showing how far they open somewhere. This is what I can find right now. They are the same size on both sides of the nose gear.
  24. Maybe that's why cowl flaps in later Cs, like my 1970 model, are fixed . . . .
  25. No, dad had just bought an experimental biplane, came down steeply onto a highway intersection near the airport. Raged is trying to prevent another thread like this:
