  1. A photo of my brother on the left and his son on the right. My brother is now a retired USN Commander. Flew A-4's, F-18 Hornets, and F-5's while active duty. His son, now a Lieutenant, is with surface warfare and meteorology. Very proud of this Veteran and his son (my nephew).
  2. This is not an answer to the OP's question, however, for those not familiar with what metals come from where in our engines, Blackstone-Labs has a nice PDF explaining this. Understanding-Aircraft-combined.pdf
  3. Check in your account settings. There is a spot called Content View Behavior. You can set it to view the first posting, the last posting or the first unread posting. Maybe that will help you with what you are looking for. And just as an aside, mine got switched without me knowing it. I switched it back to first unread post and now when I open a message thread it goes to the first unread post and has the line that tells me where the unread posts start.
  4. This is not important to anything and is really just a small pet peeve of mine but 123.45 is not an official frequency for air to air comms. It is for use in Oceanic regions and for non-governmental flight test operations. There are proper frequencies for air to air communications such as 122.75 for fixed wing, 123.025 for helicopters and 123.30, 123.50 for aviation instruction, gliders and hot air balloons. So, just a nice deep breath to get that off my chest.
  5. Almost this exact thing happened to me as well. I would notice a drop or two of oil on the nose gear after pushing the plane back into the hangar. Turns out, the oil lines coming out of the oil cooler were chafing, there was a very small hole in one. Coupled with this was a loss of a lot of oil during flight. I supposed that with the oil under pressure in and out of the cooler it was coming out a quite a quick rate (loss of about 1 quart/hour of flying). On the ground with the engine off it only dripped.
  6. It looks like if you want traffic and weather on your GNC 355 you will either have to install a transponder that will provide it like I did (GTX 345) or a GDL 88 (listed at $3995). It does not look like any inexpensive portable ADS B units like the GDL 52 will work with the GNC 355.
  7. Thanks for posting. I look forward to following your progress and of course PIREPS on the engine shop.
  8. I mentioned your name because the original question on the poll was if you had the GFC 500 for more than 6 months and I remember you being one of the early installations much longer than 6 months.
  9. Maybe @donkaye could chime in here. If my memory serves me, I recall him to be one of the first Mooneys to get the GFC500 installed.
  10. I wonder as well about these long lasting miracle batteries. A number of years ago, I was flying at night, almost home when I lost the generator (I now have an alternator). I thought that I would be okay since I was only about 10-15 minutes from my home base. I shed as much load as I could for being at night, and landed in the dark (no radios, no nothing) not by choice. Fortunately the tower was closed at my airport because it was after hours so I did not have to worry about light gun signals. I mention this because the battery power lasted less than 10 minutes. This was on a battery that fired up the engine with absolutely no hesitation each and every time. It was also a battery that was kept on a battery minder (one of the earlier ones). So, if you have a battery that you are proud of that has been "going strong" for ever, get a load capacity check on it. Just because it fires up the engine does not mean it will last when you really need it.
  11. I do this all the time. I have multiple data cards. I have a GNC 355 which is essentially the GNX 375 without the transponder. For my GNC 355 I purchased a three pack of data cards from Amazon for $24.99. They work just fine. I even pulled one out of my DSLR camera when I needed it in a pinch to update the database and it work just fine as well. From the user manual for the GNC 355/GNX 375: FEATURE REQUIREMENTS • SD card in the FAT32 format, with memory capacity between 8 GB and 32 GB Maybe this will help.
  12. I think most have heard of 6 degrees from Kevin Bacon? Well, this first part from @carusoam reads like 6 degrees from Mooney. I love how you start with a shaving company and bring it around to Mooney. Awesome!!!!
  13. There are photos of a Jaeger interior in the Gallery on Mooneyspace.
  14. Thanks for the responses. Thanks to @Skates97 for the incredibly detailed response. I may leave well enough alone for right now until I get farther into the install of the GFC 500 in my airplane.
  15. Others with more knowledge will chime in, but it is difficult to run LOP in a carbureted C model. The carburetor just does not distribute the fuel well enough to each cylinder. You will get very rough before ever being far enough lean of peak. A trick is to introduce some carb heat but for my C model it just does not work well at all. So ROP it is for me.
  16. Thanks for the response. However, the 63 C model, at least mine, did not come with the PC so no PC disconnect hole. Just a solid yoke.
  17. Is it possible to put later model yokes on a 1963 C model? I am looking to update what I have to something later that can incorporate the controls that may be needed on the yoke for when I install the Garmin GFC500 that I have currently ordered and paid for but am running into issues with the trim on the older C models (apparently Garmin did not do all the homework needed for the old C models). I also would like to incorporate a push to talk switch into the yoke instead of having the Teleset Push to talk velcroed to the yoke. It works great but if one could be incorporated into the yoke, I would prefer that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  19. I have done it many times. Run first tank for an hour, switch tanks, run the second tank dry then switch to the first tank (although after running the second tank dry, I am usually close to landing because I have been in the airplane for over 3 hours and really need a stretch). When you run the second tank dry, you get some warning. My C model gives me 10 seconds or so of the fuel pressure slowly dropping. When I switch it is really like nothing ever happened. I had a friend who owned an A model at one time and he did not let his run dry. After doing it once, his fuel pressure dropped fast enough for the engine to stumble and he did not much care for that. His is the only airplane I have heard of to drop that quickly. Normally it is a non-event. One thing that it does make me appreciate is the efficiency of the C model. It may not get you there as fast as an Ovation or Acclaim but it sure is efficient. I flew from Texas to Florida. Was in the air for 4 1/2 hours (I normally do not fly that long at a time) and when I landed and refueled I still had over an hour left of fuel. Not bad for 48 gallon tanks!!!!!
  20. Their website says that the price will be shown on the reader at the fuel pump. Apparently it is a well kept dark secret!!!!
  21. Looking at the Vividia website, they have a nice chart comparing the different scopes they sell. I have copied it here. As you can see, the rigid scopes only have a resolution of 640X480. To get a higher resolution you have to go to a flexible scope which looks like to me would be difficult to use in a cylinder. The VA-980 may fit the bill though with higher resolution and a semi rigid probe which can be bent in pretty much any shape you need and holds the shape. Unfortunately it lists on Amazon from $380 to $460 depending on the seller. I have the VA-400W and it works ok. The resolution is kind of low. The other thing is to make sure to not use it in a cylinder that is the slightest bit warm. It can greatly affect the image as well as damage the scope (info direct from the manufacturer). 22. Congratulations!!!
  23. I think the most obvious way to get rid of the nose wheel shimmy on your Columbia 400 is to sell it and buy a Mooney....problem solved.
  24. If out in California, you may want to ask @donkaye He probably knows of a few good shops out there.
