  1. Outstanding!! I would love to attend, it’s me and my copilot’s first OSH as well! Chris - 81X I’ll be bringing my father in law, Bob No MS handle, but his license plate “B1BIP “ would probably be his handle!
  2. I’m definitely also in the “young at heart” category, but my two year old has a “future pilot” shirt she loves to wear. It’s adorable.
  3. I had a leaking screw on the wing walk stiffener/brace and Permatex 3 aviation fixed that really quick.
  4. There’s the Young Aviators fly in at Triple Tree this weekend (Saturday) for those in the southeast. They are billing it as for the young and young at heart. Bring a kid that’s into aviation!
  5. Best thing that ever came to GA for transport to/from airports.
  6. For what it’s worth, my factory airspeed indicator indicates 5-9 kts faster than my G5’s which agree with each other. I was wondering what the big fuss was when I can come over the fence at 85kts, when in reality I was doing about 79. That said, bounces mean you’re still at flying speeds when ground contact occurs, I prefer full stall landings, yes even in a Mooney.
  7. I also had a few KFC150 woes before the GFC500 went in. Most times it was a broken wire or pins on the tray connector that have lost their springiness. The sly hold issues could also be a cold solder that does funky things when the unit heats up. Related, I have a working KFC150 setup minus the HSI that I’m going to list for sale soon. We all know that the 500 is great kit, but I’ll maintain that some of the biggest un-sexy benefits of going with the 500 is the opportunity for new wiring and intuitive diagnostics on potential failures.
  8. Looks like the 500 got officially approved on the J/K per the Garmin website! Still flawless performance after clocking in about 15 hours! One other really cool feature worth noting is that when you are on alt hold and change the baro setting, the AP goes to the new accurate altitude. Pretty neat!
  9. USAA. Can’t say enough good things about them. Great service and rates, no aviation exclusion.
  10. The “Wednesday at 2PM table”? So true. I wonder when the “AMU” becomes representative of a different dollar amount.
  11. I also pick up speed in descents, just not THAT much speed!!
  12. I’m willing that bet it’s sooner than OSH. Check out the rev 15 page using the link below. the J/K is listed and I’ve had my K back for about a month now from 500 development. To answer the original post, The STC is technically approved as you can see on the document. https://support.garmin.com/support/manuals/manuals.htm?partNo=GFC-500AP-00&language=en&country=US
  13. Yeah, I just went out and it’s tight back there. The rack probably needs to come out (yuck) Related, my cat tubing from the vent box that keeps the avionics bay cool is old and cracking, does anyone know what size this is? Also, bonus points if you know what size the small tubing is for an avionics fan as I have one of those as well.
  14. Wow, this is awesome, thanks!
  15. Excellent, thanks. I heard back from Garmin this morning and got some good intel on failure modes and such. Bottom line is that even if it’s still partially working, it needs to be replaced. A reassuring note is that the thermal protection software/system helps keep the unit functional by dimming the screen, etc to keep it cool.
  16. On a few of my past few flights, I’ve received a message on my GTN750 that “the cooling fan has failed”. Some of these flights have been hours long, and the unit never complained about overheating, but nonetheless it needs to be replaced. Does anyone know if this is “user replaceable” and/or can be done by a Garmin dealer or if it needs to go to a specialist?
  17. I had this exact setup I had before the GFC500. The GPSS emulation alone made a huge difference for enroute and approach maneuvering. The 7 pounds of useful load increase didn’t hurt either!
  18. Assuming it’s the Instrument, Remove the HSI and replace with G5/GAD29B/GMU11. Fixed and upgraded with GPSS. Edit- you also now have a backup AH with this solution.
  19. I also have AeroComfort yoke covers. They are not cheap, but Hector is the man and it really makes a difference in comfort and style. They also wrapped my glareshield which took garbage looking plastic and made it look much more luxurious.
  20. It sounds like bootstrapping, and a pretty significant case. To my knowledge, there's no density controller with a fixed wastegate non-Merlyn 231 so a density controller is probably not the issue. However, hoses and intake components could be loose causing this. Two or three other things also come to mind to talk to your A&P/Hangar Elves about - First, your popoff valve could be opening at 40" instead of about 42" causing the pressure to go down and then close back at 35 or so causing it to go back up. Wash, rinse repeat until you lower MP to cruise. Second, how long has it been (calendar) since your FI system was overhauled? leaking o rings caused me to go from 36" to zero power on the runway; I had fuel in the upper deck somehow, it was in need of an overhaul. If it's been 10 years or more, it might be time to consider an OH of that. I don't think this would cause a big MP change, but if you can get your engine monitor data to see what fuel flows were doing, that may help provide supporting evidence The only other off-chance item that comes to mind is related to the Continental SB regarding the primer diverter leaking. I'm not sure that would fluctuate the MP that much, but I guess it's possible under the right circumstances. Other engine readings at the time can help confirm/rule this and the above item out.
  21. I'm planning to head up and be there through Wednesday- I would love to fly in with the caravan, but unfortunately can't spare the extra days off work before OSH. Planning to land OSH on Saturday but will go on Sunday if WX is better. Caravan flyers- do you know if you are able to save any camping spots wherever you're parking?
  22. I like this setup as well with the extended arm going underneath the yoke, it doesn’t block anything. I use the RAM mount but it looks similar enough to this. Kneeboard is too much head movement for me when using it on an approach; up higher would be nice but I haven’t yet found a position I like that doesn’t block something.
  23. I would say that 3 servos are all but mandatory; adjusting trim when your G5 tells you to would get pretty old pretty fast, especially in an airplane that needs a lot of trim with flaps, approach speed changes, etc. The YD is just the bees knees and a really cool add on if you have the money.
  24. What was your technique for removing the wing walk around that screw? I have the same issue where just one top screw is weeping a little.
  25. Yeah, and after 10 seconds it pushes to straight and level- I tried it with a descending bank and it was pretty neat!
