From the reading I've done rebuilds are $2-2.5 k which is not too bad but longevity reported by pilots after a rebuild is a mixed bag. I'm nursing mine along till after osh and making a decision about replacement.
-
True for prebuy...the rest is pretty straight forward. Keep in mind for pricing overhauls are 50k, waas and svt are expensive upgrades. Look for a plane with the major features you want...to add tks is 50k.

Congrats! 1. Mooney time and an inverse commercial flight helps for annuals. Most ther things find a good IA in the area. 2. Try to find a well known one close to purchase location. 3. Controller, barnstormer, trade a plane to start with. The rest of the process is similar to buying any other type of plane. Might be a little easier if you have some cash to get the party started (deposit etc)

Partnership in Spokane / Coeur dalene area
Godfather replied to Ragsf15e's topic in Aircraft Classifieds
In certain areas of the country you might have known icing conditions for weeks / months at a time. Having the ability to legally push through some of these layers helps to give some usefulness to the aircraft... good luck on on your search, should be a number of fiki planes out there -
Not really giving it away at $6.5 k in my opinion as they sell the 625 for $5.5 k to the experimental crowd. However, they are giving it away for every one of the 100,000 slots filled with another manufacturers equipment. That slot will not open again for another 15-20 years. Most of the high end panel upgrades are going with one or two 750's. Garmin could use the 635 to start a price war and fill a lot of the 100k slots...again IMO.

Just noticed 3 Ovations and 1 Bravo sale pending at AAA. Nice to see some planes moving on the used market.

Looking at Mooneys (M20E particularly)
Godfather replied to andymccann's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I think the manual gear shines with old planes that sit a lot. If I had to choose between two 50 year old planes that have only 3k hours I'd prefer the mechanical operated unit. If the two planes were 20 years old with the same number of hours I'd go for the electric unit every time.- 66 replies

With a NA engine I'll drop down to 3-4K fighting a headwind but may come back at 14k to catch a tailwind. Very versatile to have a plane that can do both imo.
-
On long trips pushing a 40 knot headwind I'm just thankful to be flying a Mooney. Nothing worse than flying a 172 with great downward visibility and watching the car traffic pass you by.

Supposedly Garmin is having a big announcement on the 31st just before sun and fun. I'm predicting a new G500 and hopefully some other stuff to help me spend money. However, I really feel Garmin would be wise to make a new 635 or 650 that would be plug and play into the old 430 rack. IMO if they could put the new price (without rack etc) in the $6500 range it would completely change the gps/com market. Used 430 units would become very affordable to cheaper planes etc. Market share gains would be huge.
-
Personally I would not worry about the waas gps. I'd look for the panel layout that you like and make sure everything else in the panel / airframe is how you want it. With the type of money you are talking about an upgrade would be no big deal. I'd be looking for a 430 non waas unit. People are paying stupid money for some of the used gps units. I've upgraded my Mooney from 530/430 -> 530w/430w -> 750/650 and never thought I was wasting money.

Agreed about the trainers... Trying to find the best stepping stone between a 80hr ppl and a m20r. Thinking a couple hundred hrs in a c/e and a IR would be ideal but I'm also considering a 182 etc to build time and experience. I don't feel a gps is needed for this purpose but it would probably help sell the aircraft in a few years. However, if one came with one I would never remove it to sell off...way too much work to install those bloody boxes.
-
Ken, what would you say a good price is on a plane in good condition 500-1000 smoh, single working 155 w/gs, no leaks? Starting to think about a c/e/g for a family member. I'm thinking around 35-40 but I'm not sure if they are going to require 15k in refurb costs. I find it difficult to find a basic trainer Mooney that does not include an AP, GPS, etc but is not a patched together unit that will keep my IA busy for the next couple of years.

I really like the size of the pro/air. I needed to make a custom bracket to mount it but it does not cover any instruments or impede range of movement. Might not work if you have a large midsection...

Avery County Airport (7A8) is fairly close but vfr day only. Looks like a great place to stay...on my bucket list now.

is the aopa bahamas bundle worth buying?
Godfather replied to rbridges's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I purchased a guide years ago (I don't think it was from aopa) and I found it helpful. However, with an iPad and some saved PDF files the need is probably lower than it used to be. Great times, I really need to get back down there... -
Not sure how this listing is considered to have a run out engine. Opened a few times...yes, gear up landing...yes, but IMO those are some top flight names associated with the engine work. Personally I'd buy the plane for the right price after an exhaustive prebuy by a good shop. Then I'd fly the thing like it had a newly overhauled engine and not look back. One thing that makes me smile is the additional 500 ish hrs after the gear up. I hope the same owner continued to fly it as some would be scared out of the plane at that point. He did however put a very large GUMP sign in his main scan

I like to make a day trip of it and toss the bike in the back or some good walking shoes. The Grand Hotel is nice but expensive. If only going for a night or two I'd pony up and enjoy the experience. Easy airport to land at and everyone is eager to help...touchdown to riding around the island in less than 15 mins

What are we paying for Insurance Premiums
Godfather replied to M20F-1968's topic in General Mooney Talk
Surprised that a thread would be started complaining about no hard numbers given without starting us off with some good data. I'm for one interested what a $200k F looks like and the premium paid. For a data point...m20r $225k $2,200. -
3k out of 20k claimed...I don't think they are going to run out...

I have been using the fuel flow method for years and it works very well. This unit will replace my primary fuel gauges and with hopefully work as well as my moritz gauges. That is what my IA was planning on. However, there is a fuel computer unit in between the gauges and the fuel sensors. The Moritz gauges were wonderful and very accurate during flight. Hate to see them go, hope the JPI can work as well. JPI said we are good to go with the fuel sensors in he Ovation 2.
-
My IA is in the process of installing a 900 on my 2001 ovation. This unit will replace the moritz system. Does anyone know if the JPI is attached with a new wire run to the tank sensors or use the current tap that runs through the control module? Thanks!

Not surprising and very similar responses would be displayed here about the other brands. All planes can get expensive quick and the ones that brag the most about how cheap it is have not been in the game long enough.

Looking for a Garmin 430/530, maybe GTN.
Godfather replied to CJpilot316's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Chase (on beechtalk) has the 530 waas for $7750 and he is very easy to work with.
