  1. The 430 is just fine too but your install costs will be similar to the 650. Your resale and other costs associated with the 650 should yield a better recouping of your investment. The 430 will have a faster decline in value especially if they discontinue support.
  2. 650 minimum if you plan to fly IFR in my opinion. If you are going to fly VFR but get your IFR rating I would wait on the upgrades and go Stratus/IPhone/iPad kinda thing. Just my 2 cents.
  3. I had excellent reception and range from my KY 196 radio. The Garmin 430 had less range but similar reception. there is a crack on the tip of one of the antennas and I am not sure which one the 430 was tied to. I put some touch up paint on the cracked one but it didnt match up perfectly. My guess is it should be tested somehow just to be sure. I will also have a KY 196 for sale coming up. Im having the knob repaired as it worked but not completely reliable when switching channels(it would slip is the best explanation).
  4. Thanks, changed it to $.99 starting price. I personally like the looks of them but in replacing all of the rdios in the plane we decided to go with new antennas and wiring all the way through.
  5. Good evening. I've listed a bunch of items pulled from my 1978J and put them on eBay. I don't have time to manage selling and shipping all this stuff so it was simpler than listing here this round. Please take a look and feel free to ask any questions. I tried a link and didn't work so I'm posting pictures of items for sale. Just search under my account all items for sale. Thanks gang!
  6. You can buy a roll of silicone baffling and install it why not pre cut silicone that happens to fit better.
  7. Thanks! Ordered some
  8. Congratulations! Beautiful plane.
  9. Yes. He was ok with the wing tip but wanted the stabilizer one removed. He wanted a logbook entry for the wingtip and a emailed photo of the logbook entry. They or rather he didn't like it being on a control surface.
  10. Go pro mount on stabilizer caught the eye of FAA inspector. Had to be removed. Kept the one on the wing with a logbook entry.
  11. This may seem dumb but why can't you just sand down the old crusty sealant a bit and just slather new sealant on?
  12. Why did they pull it? Just curious. Thanks
  13. My 1978J 900smoh uses 5 an hour with pattern work and 6-7 on longer trips. Has been that way for two years with no signs of blow by or burning oil. Good oil analysis etc. I use 100W plus without camguard but considering trying the Phillips/camguard combination. This seems to be a quite common usage level.
  14. This article sums it up pretty well. I personally believe the higher end noise cancelling headsets are going to be your best bet. Wonder what the Navy flight deck guys use? https://ohsonline.com/Articles/2007/06/Active-Noise-Reduction.aspx?Page=1
  15. Funny!
  16. Just saw this update for electroair ignition and dual magneto installation.
  17. 78J no beacon. Navs and strobes only and no step. Came standard for mine.
  18. Tried ordering the DVD from the website but wouldn't work. Any idea how to go about purchasing the DVD.
  19. I was just perusing the Vansairforce site and looking at how they baffle their engines. Seems there may be some merit to baffling around the front of the engine as well. My thoughts are that you may gain a little more pressure in the engine compartment thus you could pull your cowl flaps in tight to gain a couple of those elusive knots in speed while being cooler. The first photo is the Vans, while the last two are my J. Anyone have any experience or thoughts?
  20. We went through mine for rocking back and forth and basically ended up sending all the components off to Bevan Rabell and having it all rebuilt. As I understand it is that the rocking part was caused by the motor having too much resistance. I don't remember the voltage that was required but just for an example let's say normally it should require like 1.3 volts but mine was taking let's say 2.5 volts or more. We sent the motor off and that fixed it. A pro can at least test the resistance for the proper voltage and at least eliminate that issue. They just hooked the motor up and slowly dialed up the voltage until the servo actuated to determine what it took. Anyway, I hope yours is that simple.
  21. Can't hurt to make a nice prebuy checklist starting with the most expensive items and just see if it makes the cut. If the OP is available give him a call. He may be upfront and honest and go over where the weaknesses are in the aircraft,.
  22. Anyone take off on one mag? Not me of course, just asking. I bet if you did though you would wonder why the plane won't climb. You might also do a nice and easy 180 back to the airport to figure out why it feels like DA is 15,000 feet.
  23. I'm currently having a 750 installed and keeping a 430w. Anyone know of the options for keeping both up to date?
  24. Looks like I'm going to need to replace both antennae on the Mooney. Does anyone know the correct replacement shark fin, not reverse 7 that will fit into the offset mounting holes as a direct fit replacement? Looks like the Comant CI196 matches the hole and mounting configuration but wanted to confirm this if possible. Thanks
  25. Semi off topic question. Would you guys assume that corrosion in the original post pictures would eventually cause failure of the cam with some certainty? A lot of owners have planes that have sat for periods of time and probably have some level of corrosion. Does all cam corrosion at a pitted level eventually cause failure of the cam or do they quite often still make TBO? Definitely a tricky topic but it's obvious that you should run your engine a lot. Before I bought my Mooney I looked at one from an older gentleman who would stuff a towel tightly into the exhaust pipe after flight. He said that when the engine cools it will pull drier air through the towel into the engine and help prevent corrosion. The hot air is expanded and when the engine cools It must draw air in. I've never seen it before or since but kinda makes sense.
