Yeah... the Stec 3100 looks pretty good... its only $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The only fly in the ointment right now is that Aspen doesn't support the Altitude pre-select with my KFC-150.
-
Interesting... what was the cost comparison between the EDM900 and the CGR30 p/c combo?
-
Me too.

I'm not really qualified to speak on this matter... but when has that stopped me before? With the previous Aspen units I couldn't justify the second unit (MFD). Mainly because I have the very same information, data, charts, traffic, etc. on the IFD540 just a few inches over. I know it could back up the PFD, but there was still the requirement to have an AI backup regardless. With the new Aspen Max screens, (I saw them at OSH and they look great!) the additional AI backup isn't needed, so two Aspen screens and I could remove ALL other instruments? That's a bit more compelling.

That will more than cover it. Pay-pal works as well.

All true... of course... thus the At the same time I'm a lot less on "high alert" cruising along in the low flight levels on an IFR flight plan than I am down in the weeds, VFR on a "beautiful for flying" Saturday with all the NORDO's.
-
Go IFR and let someone else stay on high alert on your behalf

Yeah, like I said, I think this is relatively recent upgrades to ATC. Over the last two years, and a fair amount of IMC, ATC usually reaches out to me before I even ask, and will suggest a vector or two or three, to stay clear of a cell that's just popped up. They recently threaded me between three large cells on my way home to Austin. It was almost like progressive taxi instructions. They seemed to have up the minute data, and obviously could see us easily as well. They easily kept us clear of the ugly stuff and home safely.

@carusoam I think you're missing one option from your excellent as always, summary of the thread... and that's ATC. I fly plenty of IFR and find that the combination of ADSB weather and updates from ATC, have been more than sufficient to keep me 20 nm clear of the stuff that breaks the wings off Mooneys. I can remember back to a time when ATC didn't have that capability. But I've been all over the lower 48 in just the last two or three years and have only found a couple of places where ATC able or wasn't proactively happy to help me stay away from the heavy stuff.

Air Mods is one of those shops with enough Mooney experience that MSC or not, I'd be happy for a PPI from them.

I'm somewhat in agreement with @LANCECASPER on this. If I owned the airplane... I'd be installing an engine monitor right now. Probably a G2 ($2500) if I know I'll be selling in the future or an EDM900 ($5K) if it's my forever airplane. I would also be shopping for a used 430W ($8K) or 530W to give me better radios and a moving map GPS. I'd also be looking for a 330ES ($2K) transponder from @Alan Fox so I'd have ADSB... which would only work if you had already put in a WAAS GPS. I'd also be scouring Barnstormers for an HSI... ($500) Given enough time and patience I think $12K would get it done to an acceptable level for me. If I didn't own this airplane... I would maybe keep looking? But maybe not. Well built E's are getting more and more difficult to find. Typically my minimums would be an Stec30 autopilot and a 430W. If you have that, you can build the rest pretty economically. This one is missing the WAAS GPS and that's about an $8K problem.

Question about fuel sending units on F model
gsxrpilot replied to nightmoves's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The senders can be serviced or reconditioned... but to limited effect. I was going through this a couple of years ago myself. I finally just decided to bite the bullet so to speak and get in done once and for all. JPI EDM-900 CiES senders all around Fuel is no longer an issue as I know within about half a gallon of how much I have and where it is, at all times. -
I know I've got one. It's over at @"Chocks" place right now with all my avionics to dispose of. Unfortunately I'm in Seattle/Dallas this week and won't get a chance to look for it until Monday. If Chocks gets a free minute earlier, he'll pull it out and send it to you. It's out of my 252 and you can have it for the cost of shipping. Here's a picture. It was working fine when I pulled it out.

Does an F Nose Bounce more than a C?
gsxrpilot replied to MBDiagMan's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Full flaps, full up trim, gear down... Abort and Go Around Shove Black, Blue, Red to the firewall (Blue and Red are likely already there) and just put the yoke where it needs to be. It will certainly take some effort but I can hold the yoke in place while my thumb holds the trim switch nose down. With the free hand move the flaps to take off position and then get the gear. All of this can be done in just a few seconds. I did it recently on a flight review. Just fly the plane, don't be a passenger. -
I would love to help out but can't get there until next week. I flew with these guys for Harvey. My Mooney got a work out.
-
I shouldn't post so late at night... I certainly didn't mean to disparage the TT autopilot. There sure are plenty of Mooneys out there for which the TT would be a welcome upgrade. I do fly a 252 that already has a KFC150... but one day it will fail and I'll be looking to replace it with something equal or hopefully better. I've already overspent on this plane and will never see the return if I sold it. But as of now, I consider it my "forever plane". And therefore if I fly it for another 15 or 20 years, I'll consider having fully recovered the investment in the avionics. I must say, I'm very interested in the Stec 3100... if we ever make the STC list.

Does an F Nose Bounce more than a C?
gsxrpilot replied to MBDiagMan's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Your Mooney will land just fine in ANY flap configuration... mine sure does. -
Any autopilot I'd install in my Mooney better be able to fly an approach to 200 and 1/2.
-
I might have one for you. Will it matter that it came out of a 28v airplane?
-
Disclaimer - I don't own or fly a Bravo. What instrument is giving your FF? I had a Hoskins in my 252 that seemed to wander all over the place. I get much better data from my EDM-900. So yes, I had the same problem. And that makes it pretty impossible, in my mind, to do a proper GAMI check that is indicative of anything. If you do it again... I'd start at 18 gph, let it settle down there, and then start the test. Just make sure you're at low power, 65% or less. Then I'd run the test slower and ultimately trying to get it to move just 0.1 gph at a time. But to answer #4, yes for a given MP/RPM (%power) I just set LOP base on FF. In my 252 (also turbo) that's 9.6 gph at 65%.

Soft Field Procedure in a Long Body
gsxrpilot replied to Chris K's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I wouldn't disagree with @donkaye but the condition of the sealant your tanks would also have something to do with this. Sealant in good condition should be pliable and wouldn't be effected by landing on a relatively smooth grass runway. But sealant that is old, brittle, and about to need resealing anyway, will likely be pushed over the edge and start leaking by any rough surface under the landing gear. I wouldn't expect that recently resealed tanks would be effected by roughish landing fields. -
Congrats!! Very nicely done!

SWTA charges me $158 for an oil change. That's oil, filter, and 1 hour labor. And since all I have to do is call, or just send JD a text, they go to my hangar, pull it up to the shop, do the job, and put it back in my hangar... I figure I can't afford to do it myself for that price. And since I travel so much for work, it's nice to get it done while I'm out of town. That way it's ready to fly when I am.

I took an old WX10 out of my panel. I've never missed it. I wouldn't fly in an area with thunderstorms at night. But during the day, I find that my delayed ADSB weather along with ATC is sufficient to keep me clear of dangerous convective activity.
