  1. I have used both. Maybe I had an early portable device but there was akways a power/charging issue and I think the warranty was pretty meager (90 days?) So I bought a second one and maybe even a third generation. Those things are nice but pretty flimsy. I got in moderate turbulence one day and it flew off its mount. I put in a 345 and it works great. Not having to worry about recharging and toting the portable around is nice. Plus I suspect in 20 years when you look at my panel the 345 will still be there, I suspect that 5 or more portables will have come and gone.
  2. What is the best case scenario, timewise, to put a GFC 500 in a Mooney M20C?
  3. +1 for PMA8000. Love the USB charger. I was reading the features and there seems to be one I haven't used. Any comments on bluetooth "Audio IN" for lack of a better word (I forget the actual feature phrase) It basically lets you bluetooth the audio from the ATC and your intercom to an audio video recording device like a go-pro or maybe a phone.
  4. yea- no me saying you have another job is a little bit of a red flag
  5. I would ballpark it like this: Shelter: Hangar fees would average $450 per month. You could get it as low as $250 or as high as $600. Tie down would be less than $100 per month. But your own hangar is priceless. Its like the treehouse you always wanted as a kid and the clubhouse you always wanted as an adolescent. It is an escape. I say that you could rent a hangar and not even have a plane and it would be worth it. Maintenance: Will depend on the plane but $7500 per year is a reasonable average. Insurance: Will depend if you go liability only or include hull value. I hate insurance in general of all types. Remember their MOA is to collect premiums and deny claims. But you probably get liability insurance. If you have a loan payment likely you will be required to have hull insurance. $4000 est. As mentioned in previous posts having your own plane is lovely. It is freedom and fun. Life is short. Buy the plane.
  6. Some of the various facets under construction
  7. Thanks- will get on it Will get some pics at hangar today
  8. I have a Mooney that I love- flew it today. The 340 is more of our troop transporter
  9. HELP- I am doing a mini upgrade to my Cessna 340: having professionals add engine monitors, an aspen, a G5 on the FO side, and fixing the autopilot. While they are doing that, the wife and I have been keeping ourselves busy with the upgrades we can do: new carpet (kit from SCS) new fuel cap paint, O-rings new placards and circuit breaker panel lettering new leather like interior (we actually did this ourselves) all new seats (we skinned the 30 year leather off the old ones and had an upholstery shop do these) new paint (and some new pieces) of the plastic trim window covers and now we are replacing all the external screws around the windows (under mechanic supervision) because they are rusty (this is actually kind of a pain to do) What suggestions do you guys have that an owner with limited mechanical skills but good energy and enthusiasm can do while his plane is being upgraded. I probably have a few more weeks of working time. FREE STUFF (and some that will be posted on Ebay) I have the old (one year old) carpet. I bought the "lightweight" kit from SCS last year because it sounded like a good idea. It was too light weight for me. If anyone wants it, it is free for the taking- just come get it. It is actually a fine product- just not robust enough for my application. Plastic window covers. I have four of these- not sure which windows they cover. I know know how to fix these but when I first bought the plane I went to Osh Kosh and bought new ones during a buying spree. They do need repaired but it can be done easily. Free- come get them. And they I will list on Ebay the myriad analog instruments I removed. Tach generators, what I call Mercedes type twin cessna instrumentation, airspeed indicator, altimeter, turn co-ordinator, etc. If anyone knows of something they want just email or call me. They are all located at KLOU. I'm going to post on the twin cessna and POA as well.
  10. I called Hartzell and quickly got confirmation that I could avoid the interval with my new props
  11. I had a similar episode. Retarded the throttle and got the gear not down audible warning. It ended up being the gear motor. Had it overhauled/exchanged by Lasar I believe
  12. There is an AD out for cracks I believe. I had to replace my yokes with new when I first got my C model. It was very pricey!
  13. Someone mentioned VW but it conjured up Nazi images Good call on the corvette- about as much room in the back seat!
