When I first got my C it would run rough if I applied carb heat full rich with idle power. Now I leave it leaned for landing and only go full rich on a go around. I generally use power on descent and rarely use carb heat.

Thanks for all of the responses. I feel like a dumbass for not checking the downloaded charts first but the app was telling me that everything was current. When I checked somehow the relevant charts were not selected. Hopefully it will work as it should now.

Garmin Pilot won't display vfr or low altitude ifr charts at altitude. I have Garmin Pilot on my ipad and iphone and have used it for a couple of years without an external antenna but when I would get above 5000' or so the charts would not display good. I thought it was because it was too high to get a good cell signal. I recently bought a GDL 39 3D antenna thinking it would solve the problem but today I flew from SC to St Petersburg, Fl at 8000' and it still would not display the charts properly. The antenna seemed to work good for weather, traffic and attitude but the IFR low altitude chart was spotty on both the ipad and phone. Has anyone else had this problem? Does the chart detail only come from cell signal? Thanks

Please add me to the map as well. Thanks

I have a trip planned to Memphis for June 8-9. I hope the weather is as nice and now I have to add Bass Pro to my list of things to see. Thanks for the pics.

I use Garmin Pilot on an Ipad and Iphone and really like it. I was about to buy the GDL 39-3D antenna and thought I would ask anyone that has one how they like it? Is it worth the $900? Is something new and improved about to come out? Is the price coming down? Any thoughts? Thanks

How do you even get into flying Mooneys?
Htwjr replied to The Other Red Baron's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I did a lot of research particularly on Mooneyspace. I knew I wanted speed, efficiency, simplicity, range and payload and there was really only one choice. I got my ppl about four years ago and the Mooney a month later. I did sit in one before purchasing mine, but like Kpaul I owned the first one I flew and it has been great. -
Charlie, I am planning on flying into Grand Strand in the morning about 8:00am and will be leaving about 1:30-2:00pm if you still wanted to check out a C model with Johnson bar and hydraulic flaps. Chad

It is my understanding that on some planes the center of gravity changes with fuel burn. I think it is helpful for a W&B app to show that even if you used all of the fuel you are still within the W&B envelope.

I have a '67C with johnson bar and hydraulic flaps that I keep near Florence. I fly to Grand Strand pretty often and would be glad to let you check it out and go for a ride sometime.

Ordered with the group discount. Supposed to arrive today. Thanks Dan.

Open Invitation to Spruce Creek Airpark
Htwjr replied to Yooper Rocketman's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I bought my plane from Spruce Creek a few years ago. We got a tour and were really impressed and also ate at the restaurant. I would recommend a visit. Saw some really nice planes and houses as well as a golf course. Main street is a taxiway. How cool is that? I was told that it is the largest or busiest privately owned airport in the world. I would like to visit again someday. -
Always better to be on the ground wishing you were flying than to be flying wishing you were on the ground.

Well we made it over and back across the mountains Thursday but it was outside my comfort zone in that I was dealing with three firsts all at once. Fist time crossing the mountains, first time getting up close and personal with IMC and first time being concerned with icing. Since the terrain on my direct route was 7000' I deviated south crossing 4000' terrain. The headwinds were 25-30kts. I crossed at 6500 but ran into some precip with the temps right around freezing. Once across everything was fine. On the way home I got above the clouds at 9500 and made good time 170kt + ground speed. After we crossed the mountains we were between layers and ran into some light precip and started getting some ice on the windshield so I descended to warmer air diverting around the clouds and still made good time. The ground speed on descent got up to 185kts. I had flight following the whole way but in retrospect I should have filed IFR and considered getting a pop up clearance. With my newly acquired instrument rating I felt fairly comfortable around the clouds. The combination of mountains, clouds and ice not so much.

I love flying at night but am always concerned about engine failure or really any emergency. Has anyone tried or does anyone use or carry night vision goggles for night flights as an extra safety measure. Will they work from an airplane good enough to pick out a field? Just curious. Thanks

I am planning my first mountain crossing trip from SC to KY. The direct route crosses 6500' terrain with a substantial head wind. How much clearance or what altitude would be required to avoid any problems with a mountain wave? I realize that this is not even considered a mountain for you westerners but I wanted to have as smooth a flight as possible. Thanks

New Member, Very Close to Buying C Model
Htwjr replied to MBDiagMan's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
You sir are purchasing the best value in all of general aviation. My considered opinion after much research and 3 1/2 years of ownership. I am a big fan of speed, efficiency and simplicity and the C model fits the bill like no other. 140-145kts, good useful load, less than 10gph, manual gear. What's not to like? Congratulations on your purchase and I hope you enjoy you C as much as I have enjoyed mine. -
Want to replace my old rotating beacon with led strobe
Htwjr replied to deltchief's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
My plane has both an old rotating red beacon as well as an old red/white strobe. Can I replace both with a new LED strobe and do away with the rotating beacon? -
I am considering a GPS and have what may be a stupid question. Does a GTN 650 require a separate glide slope indicator or is it displayed on the unit? The reason I am asking is that I talked with an avionics guy and told him I was considering getting a 430w and he said by the time I bought the separate glide slope indicator I would be pretty close to the price of the 650. How much should a 650 cost installed? Is the 650 worth the extra cost? Any advice appreciated.

Very nice looking plane. The paint, windshield and rounded windows really make it look modern. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed my '67C.

I have a '67 C and I replaced all of the side windows a few months ago. If your windows are old or cloudy I would not want to do all of the work without replacing with new and I also have doubts about not cracking the old ones. I was able to remove mine in one piece but they did have some cracks around the screw holes. I used solar grey for the front two and dark tint for the rear and I really like the way it looks, from inside and out. Mine had the old green tint which was cloudy and crazed. You can use the old ones as a rough template for the outside dimensions but not for the holes. I used a belt sander to get then to fit then held them inside while someone drilled holes from outside the plane. We then countersunk the holes to fit flush with the skin which has countersunk holes for the screws. Be sure to buy the drill bits and countersink bit that is made for acrylic. I did not think it was too bad of a job. I have not replaced the interior plastic panels yet as I am in the process of repairing and painting them.

I just patched my right tank using the Maxwell method. Tonight I replaced the drain and put about 1/2 tank of gas to check for leaks before replacing the access cover. So far so good. Do I need to drain the gas back out before replacing the access cover? My A&P said not but I wanted to see what others had to say. My question is will the access cover sealant cure ok with gas in the tank? Thanks

I think I have the ultimate hanger deal. Very nice insulated hanger with remote control bi-fold doors front and back, drive in, drive out. The hanger has a lounge area with full bath and shower and kitchen area. It is located on a 3600' grass strip half way between my office and my house about 10 min from each. I made a deal with the owner to swap out use of the plane for the hanger. He has flown with me a couple of times and with an instructor to get checked out in the plane but has not used the plane in a year and a half although he has lots of credit built up.

I am in the process of replacing the packings and o-ring on the hydraulic flap pump plunger. The packings seem to be made of felt with a leather backing on one side. Which way should the leather side face? Toward the o-ring that goes between them or away from the o-ring or does it matter? I have the diagram but it does not indicate. Thanks
