That looks like the right one. I have this style on my installation but sadly paid JPI full price for it. This CB wishes Jetdriven had made his post 2.5 years ago. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Mooney Round The World Flight Project Amelia Earhart 1937 2017
cnoe replied to BCrystal's topic in General Mooney Talk
I'm not privy to the details but as I recall from the Facebook posts he burned through 20AMU in fuel, handling, and fees by the half-way point. 'Tain't cheap, particularly on his (Amelia's) chosen route. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk- 439 replies

Not to be argumentative, only to answer your question... I believe "Happy Birthday" to indeed be in the public domain, but if I heard one of my original compositions being sung at a private party I'd be flattered. OTOH, if I saw an unlicensed version listed on iTunes you bet I'd sue. If the Scheme Designer copyright is invalid as you assert then that's a serious problem for their business model and Mooney might have grounds for recourse against them. I too wonder if they've ever forced someone to repaint their plane as claimed. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

After reading all the posts on this thread I'm a bit surprised that so many people think it's fine to take someone's copyrighted work and use it for their own financial gain. I'll admit that for the past three years I've been in great admiration of PTK's paint job. IMO it's probably the best looking Mooney I've ever seen. Still I wouldn't blatantly copy it (as JC admitted) without permission from Scheme Designers or PTK. I'd likely be less critical if this was just a private owner, but when a for-profit enterprise uses a copyrighted design without permission it seems beyond lazy and disrespectful. As a copyright holder of musical compositions I strongly support those who respect intellectual property rights. But considering the huge volume of music and motion-picture piracy it's apparent that many of you don't give a rat's ass. On that point we'll just have to agree to disagree. Just my $0.02.

For those of you north of the Mason-Dixon line and/or east of the Mississippi, that means it's no longer sticky.[emoji14] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

That's crazy. I haven't paid more than $3.62 for months at my home base. 7,000' runway w/ILS and approach lighting. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Has anybody flown their Mooney into the grass strip at Byrd's Adventure Center in NE Arkansas? I'll be landing there on Friday barring any significant rain in the area (none in the forecast). I've got a couple good reports on field condition but would appreciate any comments from other Mooney drivers (or any other first-hand knowledge). My J's been on grass a few times and I'm aware of the issue with tall grass and lower gear-doors. Slow full up-elevator taxiing is also understood. I'm just curious if there's anything else about this field (other than high terrain to the west) that may be of interest. Thanks!

It's disappointing that some of you have difficulty getting your wives/girlfriends to fly with you. Many MSers travel far and wide with their significant others. My wife isn't interested in becoming a pilot but she makes a great crew-member backing me up on communications and operations. For her, the love of travel overcomes any apprehension about flying in a 40 year-old plane. I strive to fly smoothly and openly communicate about everything during the flight to keep her in the loop. Others' spouses are much more involved in flying being pilots themselves or trained right-seaters. Some fly their non-pilot husbands around. Even more impressive are the many professional female pilots such as my primary flight instructor who was in North Carolina last week earning her Honda-Jet type rating. We don't have enough pilots of the female persuasion. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Ever heard of "inflation"?

It may be time for a road trip. All American Aircraft (http://www.allamericanaircraft.com/default.htm) is only 59 miles from Kerrville. They show a baker's dozen Mooney's in their current inventory. If either of you are in Houston I'd be happy to give you the $2 tour if I'm around.

Just like Clarence said. It sounds like the installation was correct. You'd gain some accuracy by purchasing and installing the optional piggyback probe. The installation manual says... "Most factory installed cylinder head temperature gauges utilize a bayonet or screw-in resistive type probe that occupies one of the bayonet sockets. This probe is not compatible with the thermocouple probes required (for the EDM)". Even with the plug ring 450 F. sounds excessive; what were your other temps? Also, those rings can get hard and might need annealed to seal properly. Just a guess. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

My last 3 trips to Austin have been to KGTU. "GTU Jet" has similar service to KEDC but with a bit less glamour. They offer cars from either Hertz or Avis and run about $10-$15 less per day than at Austin Exec. Same overnight tie-down fee ($10). GTU is adjacent to I-35 and though a bit further out of town it only adds 10 minutes driving time due to the close proximity to the interstate. Both facilities are great in my opinion; I've only recently chosen to use KGTU due to the significant savings on rental cars.

You're preaching to the choir. Foreflight and other apps display fuel pricing, but it would be better if they could post fees too. I always look at their "comments" section before choosing an FBO as there will often be a poor review of bad service or high pricing. When I get good service I try to post a positive comment myself (see GTU Jet at KGTU). It does piss me off that I have to call prospective FBOs to get their full pricing scheme which could (should) easily be posted on their websites. When you've got something to hide I guess you hide it. And keep in mind this isn't a GA Piston Single thing only. I know that the guys in TBMs, Pilatuses, and VLJs are getting ripped off much worse than us.

I wouldn't be too quick to yank the servo out unless you have to. The motor performance can be somewhat determined on the plane as noted above, and a servo OH will put you out likely 1.5 AMU or thereabouts + R&R labor. I also didn't mean to sound the alarm about the clutch contamination. If you KNOW it was contaminated then the clutch should be disassembled for cleaning, but I'd be inclined to nail down a diagnosis first if at all possible. Have you completed the S-TEC "functional ground test"? If the control wheel moves okay during the test your clutch may be okay. A high starting voltage (requirement) of over 2 volts might point to a faulty motor (or dirty/sticking brushes). Also make sure your PFGC is grounded properly (ground lead from harness). Anthony, it's been a great learning experience for me, and here's one lesson I learned that may benefit you and/or others. The S-TEC pitch servo employs a simple friction clutch that's nothing more than some tension and shim washers adjusted appropriately tight to a "slip torque" specific to each individual airframe. The solenoid engages or disengages the motor from the capstan gearing as commanded. A newer style solenoid was instituted some time ago to more positively disengage the drive and older servos can have this upgraded. With the old style you may have to relieve yoke pressure on the capstan before it effectively disengages. I've attached a screenshot of the clutch diagram for your viewing pleasure. I'll also include a pic of my clutch in the plane with its cover removed. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Looking good Paul but I question your decision to leave it with Sandman and Chocks. On my way to Austin yesterday I swear I saw a Mooney flying inverted as I passed the ELA VOR![emoji15] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I pulled my files and looking at the invoice I started off with 12 of the SK27S3-4S, 2 of the SK27S3-5S, and 2 of the SK27S3-6S plus 14 of the 2600-SW retainers. I'm not sure exactly which ones I ended up using. I ordered 14 NAS1515-H-4L nylon washers but only used them where the holes were overly worn as they'll hang up sometimes when removing the cowl. I also ordered 15 of the SK40S5-5S, 15 SK-GS grommets, and 15 SK-R4GS retainers. I had previously replaced the 2 lower retainers (by the nose gear) using the bigger flange-type grommets. P.S. Chaffe tape thickness can affect lengths too and I now see I later ordered a few more longer fasteners to work it all out. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

An altitude hold issue can indeed show up with intermittent and/or erratic symptoms. I've dealt with 3 different issues with my STEC AH in the past 12 months. When it works, it works great, but... My latest issue involved the pitch servo and we were able to revive it for a yet-to-be determined amount of time with some in-plane maintenance (with the guidance of Autopilots Central - great guys!). Using a variable DC power supply unit we were able to disconnect the servo wiring harness and fabricate a new DE-9 connector/test harness to check for the motor starting voltage and amperage draw. Then we ran the motor both forward and reverse several times to assure good brush contact. It's been a few weeks now working great and cost less than $5 + labor. When/if it starts causing problems again we'll yank it out and send to AC for an overhaul and solenoid upgrade (to new style). One more thing... did your clutch "clean-up" involve completely removing the clutch plates for cleaning or did they just remove the cover and spray it down with solvent? You won't get it resolved IMO without disassembly. I hope this helps. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
