I would double check the external timing. That is setup differently than a traditional magneto. With mine you put #1 cylinder top dead center place SF and then double check the internal timing. Also double check the power line. It is best to go straight to the battery terminal. Any interruption in power supply reset the electronics in the SF and causes a rough engine.

Anybody with Surefly installation experience

I would definitely recommend having someone with experience install the SureFly. If I was to install my system again I would say it would be an honest 7 hours on an Ovation that has the battery in the tail. So maybe add a couple hours for good measure. Running the power through the cabin, running leads for new slick harness, capacitor, RPM resistor, power conditioner, installing and timing SF. For the newbie installer I could see how 17 hours would be possible. I felt like the timing was very simple but I don’t have the gear which I heard people having problems with. Power supply gremlins and the rpm resistor created a bunch of down time and tumble shooting for me that would be avoided on a second installation. With that said I am real happy with SF and I am seeing gains in all areas you would expect from an ignition.- 82 replies

G500 here as well and no problem with Sandisk. -
The most basic Reiff heat strips are $209 which gets the heat to the most critical part, the oil. You just JB weld them to the oil pan.

The plane has worked out well for my needs. This is a trip back to San Diego from sun valley Idaho with a friends daughter that hitched a ride. 3 adults and a baby. You can see the bags since I took the 1 seat back out which I do when I belt in the baby seat. I could have easily left it in. There is a large western saddle in that pile along with the baby gear. Non stop 4 hour, 720 nm flight and everyone was comfortable.

That’s really great to hear! They seem to be getting into their groove now that some of the newness is wearing off. I need to swing by and start to develop a relationship with them. Did you feel like the hours billed and rates were fair? Care to share what they figured out that stumped other mechanics? -

After to talking to the mechanic this was not the plane I was admiring at the shop. It is a plane I have seen tied down on the field and why I recognized the tail number. Still sad. -

Interestingly the tail number sounded familiar. I believe this may be the 310r that was in for some maintenance at KMYF just a couple days ago. If it’s the same plane that I’m thinking of it was a beautiful and apparently well maintained 310. I had to stop and walk around it because I don’t see to many well kept and updated twins. RIP for those involved! -
I’m NA but I know when the fuel gauge says zero I have 15 until the fuel pressure starts to fluctuate when that happens I have a couple minutes until the engine quits. Having intentionally run the tank dry enough times I know there is no reason to go past this fluctuations there essentially no fuel left. I my J it would surge for a little while before it quit and fire right up as soon as I switched tanks, it had a lot of obvious warning. My S just quits and takes a few seconds to fire up, not much warning so unless your paying attention it’s a little more alarming. It’s nice to know exactly how much fuel you have left a get the bonus 3 gallons of unusable fuel out of the tank you run dry.

Well interesting turn of events today. While this is indeed a problem that is occurring with the G500’s it turns out it wasn’t the problem I was having. I was talking to one of the guys at the avionics shop and he happened to ask if I was in the tail cone for anything recently. I told him that I was actually because my electric trim was stuck and I needed to clean the micro switches to fix it. He then explained to me that the Garmin wiring harnesses are notorious for having pins loose contact and if you simply remove the harness and reconnect it that it will take care of the problem. Sure enough problem solved! Here is the picture I posted of the electric trim and you can see the bundles of wires that lead to the harness. Maintenance induced failures by yours truly. -
Do the wing sight fuel gauges go higher than 30 gallons on the R models? If they do I would be interested in thoughs if available.

Make sure the the hot exhaust is not leaking through the gasket onto the CHT probe. -

I agree! I think they at minimum could have given a prior warning that this would be an upcoming issue. I went out to do a VFR flight but the screen kept X’ing out on taxi so the plane is grounded until they have time to swing it. I also think they should allow some base level access to do a simple compass swing on your own. -

Started up the plane to fly to work and got this message on the G500. Decided to put the plane back in the hangar and drive to work since I couldn’t find this error message in the manual and didn’t know if it was a safety of flight issue. The shop hadn’t seen this error either and a call to Garmin turn up that there was a magnetic north update in navigation software and if you haven’t had a compass swing to calibrate the magnometer in several years your will need to do one. After I contacted the shop I guess they got 3 other call the day after me. So if you see this message that’s what’s necessary. They didn’t feel it’s a safety of flight issue but recommended not flying in IMC until calibrated. Hope this helps someone else.
