RobertE Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 I've got an IO 360A3B6 engine and am about to replace the plugs with Tempest UREM38E plugs (that's the right product code, yes?) and noticed something that previously escaped me - the choice of 2 thicknesses of gaskets. So which do I use? The 18mm or 14mm variety? If, in the meantime, someone wants to speak up on behalf of fine wire plugs, please do. My mechanic is a doubter. Thanks.
OR75 Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 the M actually stands for the size of the mounting thread: M (or B )= 18mm
Bob_Belville Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 I put a set of Tempest UREM 38S in my IO360 A1A ('66E) last year. I'm well satisfied. I also had fine wire plugs in my first Mooney years ago, probably close to 2000 hours of trouble free operation. And @ $50 per plug for the Tempest, they're cheaper than massives, per hour. The only negative I hear is that they're fragile and should not be dropped on the floor. Well, duh!
BigTex Posted July 17, 2013 Report Posted July 17, 2013 I too really like my fine wire plugs. Really makes a big difference with my engine and very glad I made the change. Some start out by replacing the lower plugs to prevent fouling. One of the downsides ( other than price) is that they tend to act like glow plugs and cause the engine to kick back after shutdown.
bumper Posted July 18, 2013 Report Posted July 18, 2013 And when cleaning plugs you can simply anneal the old gaskets (copper work hardens in use, so annealing should be done to insure a proper seal): Make a hook out of safety wire. Hang a couple of copper gaskets at a time on the hook and heat to dull red with a propane torch. Immediately dunk in a cup of water to quench. Use a ScotchBrite pad to clean the gasket. Feel good about saving $.083 or more each gasket. bumper . . . yeah, I'm parsimonious
