lclyons Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 I’ll spare everyone the gory details, but the prop on my ’84 J is totaled. Since I have to find a replacement, I was wondering what people on this list would recommend. Should I just replace it with an overhauled version like I had (McCauley Model: B2D34C214B), or should I consider changing to something like the Hartzell 2 blade scimitar top prop (I think the net additional cost to me for this option is about $3k). Or are there other options you would have me consider? Quote
Cody Stallings Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 Jim is right, the McCauleys are great. But from my experience working on props, the Hartzell has the edge. For a couple reasons:1 The C214 is non oil filled, so the greese used during assembly is all the greese the bearings get till the next time it goes to a propshop. An the hub has a breather pin, which it has to have, but it lets condensation in. An that's what scrapes those bearings the bearings during overhaul. Corrosion, pitting, rust. That prop has 4 bearings @$500ea x 4. Reason #2, Is the back of the hub. For some reason where the pitch change rod comes through the hub, it wears out faster than normal, an allows engine oil to bypass the Oring an it fills the hub with engine oil , which will end up coming out around the blade socket Oring. The fix is a steel repair sleeve an some machine work....$ Hartzells have there issues as well. If you do not greese a Hartzell properly it will vomit greese down the blade. But I have noticed that the 2 an 3 blade Hartzell propellers seem to make it through the overhaul process with less high dollar parts having to be installed. If you take care of any prop as stated by the manufacture recommendation, all propellers do pretty well as far as holding up pretty well during overhaul. Being most all are on Part:91 GA aircraft, the operator does not have to comply with the 6 yrs or 2000hrs. Like with a Part :135 operator...... I don't work for Hartzell by the way. Just been my experience dealing with props for yrs. 1 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 I have the scimitar on my '66E. (IO-360-A1A) The no-continuous-operations arc is different: 2350-2550 if over 24", at least for this engine. Prop is now 4 years old, 150 hours, no issues. The Scimitar increases take off roll and decreases climb rate by a minor amount, about 20' & 20' fpm, I think. The STC makes no claim for higher cruise though that's the understanding. I see no documentation that this prop is heavier than the old Hartzell. Quote

I'm in line for another eci on my prop - have 240 hours since rebuild - but the rebuild was in 98 ( I've put most of the hours on the prop since my purchase three years back) I had it resealed in 2011 during the last eci and now the shop doesn't want to eci it without a rebuild...... Cody Stallings Posted April 24, 2013 Report Posted April 24, 2013 Mike if you are askin if it can have the Inspection done without the overhaul, yes you can.... 15 yrs is a long time to go between rebuilds, but the re seal in 11 it was opened up, during that process the repairman would have givin your propeller a really good look for anything worn, or unairworthy during the inspection an seal job. If you need the inspection done, I would be more than happy to handle that for you, if you are running out of options. Quote
