Jsavage3 Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 Anyone out there had LASAR STC 103A or 103B done to their Mooney? I have an '86 J model and I'm considering having these two mods completed... Any personal feedback (before & after kind of stuff) would be greatly appreciated...pictures would be a plus too! Thank you Quote
N601RX Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 I have the brake cylinder rotation. It moves the caliper from the back side of the wheel to the front. It doesn't involve any parts, just drilling 4 new holes and remounting. Quote
aerobat95 Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 I have the wheel well liner done and the the brake cylinder rotation. I cannot speak of performance increases specifically because I had a whole bunch of the mods done at once but the wheel well looks cleaner. Also I don't think I was charged much to have it installed. Next time I am out at the hangar I will take a pic or two. I have a 74' F and I typically see around 155KTAS....I think thats pretty good for a pre-J bird. Quote
Alan Fox Posted March 18, 2013 Report Posted March 18, 2013 The wheel well liners are a total waste of money... Quote

bumper Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 Visors, SS wheel covers, recognition lights w/ flasher, and SS tie downs with jacking points. Nothing to make it go faster. But the Mod 212 (individual Slicks) conversion added some knots (the old engine was tired I guess) and the PowerFlow exhaust added a few more. Quote
Alan Fox Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 Way to make a guy feel good I wasted my money on them, Why shouldnt I inform someone else....as a side note , the birds absolutely loved building nests in them... Quote
aviatoreb Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 Does anyone know of any company that sells a ski tube STC? Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 I think LASAR might have done so at one point, but I'm not sure. I've seen a Rocket for sale recently that had a LASAR extended baggage mod that looked AWESOME, but one would have to be careful with W&B loading things in the tailcone. I've carried two pairs of skis (up to 181 length) in my stock J with no issues, but I was solo. Tails in the hat rack, and tips over the seat back, lashed down securely. (I'm glad I don't ski on 200's anymore!) Quote

(I'm glad I don't ski on 200's anymore!) I'm a cross country skier - and a tall one at that. My classic skis are 205's or 210's and even my skate skis push 200. They BARELY fit. W&B wouldn't be much an issue since I would either be carrying skis or bikes - my bikes already fit - so just skis. Really a ski tube would be quite all I need. I saw the picture of that rocket extended baggage - it did look awesome. Big enough to carry small children. :-O (Reminds me of when I was like 3 I had a ride in a small space in a corvette like that.) But as the discussion went, an extended baggage compartment would require moving lots of electronics and possible upset access. Not worth the trouble for me. I just want a ski tube. Quote

My 178's fit just about perfectly in the J.... 1 Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 Erik, I didn't even think of CC skis! We don't get to utilize those around here, unfortunately, and if I'm going to CO I darn sure want to do downhill. If I were to need a ski tube today, I think I might get a friendly IA to approve cutting a hole in the back of the hat rack as a minor mod, and fabricate a cover that velcroes in place when not needed. Just a thought...it is non structural and doesn't impact any function in the plane. Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2 Quote

I do 10k in ~30min, sometimes faster on my skate skis. Its sort of like mountain biking in terms of speed and in the trails. And very peaceful compared to downhill since it is very quite and serene in the woods. I get out 5 or 6 days a week for 3 or 4 months of the year for anywhere from 30-60 min - its like a running program since we can do it on several local groomed trails - and its free and it keeps me in shape. And in the middle of the winter I go around the state for kids races and my races - my kids are better than me now.... I have not done downhill skiing since I moved away from CO in 1995. Never even been on parabolics! Minor mod eh? I will query my AP and see if he is willing.... ANybody have any drawings? Quote
PTK Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 Sounds good but, thinking outloud, how would that support the weight without exceeding the hatrack limitation? It depends I guess on how far into the tailcone they'd need to extend. Quote

It depends I guess on how far into the tailcone they'd need to extend. XC skis weight almost nothing compared to downhill skis. I don't know the number but I would say like one or two lbs for a pair. The poles are even much less. XC poles are long too - my poles are 172 and 177.5cm resp. They run 60g/m. Seriously I have hats heavier than that. Well maybe not, but we are talking carbon fiber featherweights here - but very long and bulky. 1 Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 The weight of the skis would likely be supported on the front of the hat rack where there is support...they back end would likely just flex out of the way. The skis would certainly need to be tied down as well. Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2 Quote
Super Dave Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 :-) CC rocks! Its not just "your fathers" shuffle skiing anymore either. As long as we're talking skiing, I'd encourage any CC skiers out there to make a trip to 3CU (Cable, WI). The American Birkibiener literally starts on airport property, and Telemark Lodge is just off the south end of the runway. They clear an area for airplane parking, but if you need a plug in, tie down or fuel, you'll need to park on the north end, which is still walkable to the Lodge. Telemark is a little run down, but the rooms are clean, the food is better than you'd expect, and the beer selection is pretty good. If you just want to make a day trip, they will sell you a trail pass that includes use of locker room and shower. Telemark maintains its own extensive trail system that links to the Birkibiener trail, which is world class for both classic and skate. Quote

Might work out just like ski straps (neoprene+Velcro straps). Quote
carusoam Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 Since the CG of the skis is right around the bindings... Don't let the bindings get past the bulkhead and the calculation is the same as if they were in the cargo bay??? Otherwise, if the bindings are kept under the hat rack, then Hat rack limit applies... Ya? Best regards, -a- Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 That is exactly how I would calculate it. In all likelihood it is trivial, though, as I wouldn't expect anyone to carry skis with more than 2 people on board, and thus not likely get to MGW or aft CG. Quote
carusoam Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 If you have the split folding back seats... You would want to mount the ski tube a little off center or extra wide to allow a passenger back there as well? Caution of course, when filling with three people, while flying /landing at high altitude airports... Best regards, -a- Quote

I have only been able to carry one 29er MTB (removed both tires and seatpost) so far but have been looking at some carrying cases that may allow for two. Aviatoreb- any pointers on cases for carrying multiple bikes? Do you remove the rear seat? Quote

I have only been able to carry one 29er MTB (removed both tires and seatpost) so far but have been looking at some carrying cases that may allow for two. Aviatoreb- any pointers on cases for carrying multiple bikes? Do you remove the rear seat? I have easily put 2 29ers, or even 1 29er and 2 road bikes (but not as easily) into my M20k. The trick is wheel bags and BBQ covers. You don't want a hard case because that takes up too much volume. You don't want to put the bikes in the airplane loose since they are dirty, they have grease on them which gets on upholstery, and the sharp points like pedals, etc rip the interior. I just wrote about this. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/33946-my-sons-vision-of-us-and-my-plane-notice-the-bikes-in-the-back-reflecting-my-favorite-two-hobbys-in-one-activity/ In a BBQ (wrapped all the way around the frame, with seatpost off, then use straps to keep it tightly wrapped around the frame) the bike, even a 29er, slides right around the front door. Oh, I use a bungy cord between the head rest and the metal slides at the floor to hold the copilot seat bent down while I slide the bike in. If all is setup right, this is not such a difficult operation and takes just a moment. Then I put wheels in proper bicycle wheel bas and they slide right too. If you have two people, then the second person can lean in to the cargo door and help guide the bike into the back. Also sometimes I carry my time trial bike with the rear wheel still attached. It also goes in without a problem in a BBQ cover, all wrapped up tight, with the front wheel and seatpost off. Quote
