co2bruce Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 As if these engines didn't cost enough to maintain....... http://www.tcmlink.com/pdf2/CSB08-3B.pdf This will need to be complied with. Quote
Alan Fox Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 Just spoke to the guys in mobile....It is not an AD therfore not mandatory , the few instances where they have failed , it is believed to be a maintence induced failure , Quote
co2bruce Posted February 18, 2013 Author Report Posted February 18, 2013 It's a Critical Service Bulletin, and in the eyes of Continental it is "critical for flight safety". I guess that means it's not manditory as far as the FAA is concerned, but I for one would be concerned if I was made aware of it and did nothing. I do fly family and friends. Quote

As far as the "guys" in Mobile go, these engines are perfect and nothing that happens is related to manufacturer. That being said I don't know a single IO 550 pilot that hasn't changed out one or more cylinders way before TBO. My engine also had a crankshaft AD before it was a year old. (I supose that also has nothing to do with the quality of these engines coming out of the factory) Sorry just venting. Quote
Jeff_S Posted February 18, 2013 Report Posted February 18, 2013 Mandatory or not, this doesn't seem like a huge expense to me, especially if incorporated into an upcoming annual. But I fly a Lycoming so I don't know how much things related to Continental engines cost. Sort of like the recent Piper AD...it smacks of just good maintenance checks and procedures that you should be doing anyway. Quote
Alan Fox Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 The arms for a Bonanza are the same for mix and throttle , list from TCM is 251 each.... Quote
RJBrown Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 These type of bulletins are to help TCMs lawyers sleep at night. Without the bulletin they could be sued more easily. 1 Quote
Alan Fox Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 I will follow the early version of the bulletin , but I am not buying 500.00 worth of arms unless an AD is issued..... 1 Quote
carusoam Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 If you buy a factory reman, the SS parts come with the kit... -a- Quote
