KSMooniac Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 FYI, LASAR just posted on the email list that the factory has cranked out the necessary parts for them to offer the 201 windscreen conversion kits again! If you've been wishing for this, now is the time to order! Quote

Never was really happy with the treatment just in front of the windshield. Quote
jetdriven Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 Worth 3 knots, improved resale value, a quieter cabin, no water leaking into your avionics, and a glareshield big enough to place an iPad and a GDL 39. That conversion is a winner. Quote

I will keep that in mind. I would like a cleaner look. They left little access panels for right in front of the plexi. The glass itself is in good shape (learned early how not to screw it up! ) 1 Quote

The glass itself is in good shape (learned early how not to screw it up! ) Why do you not like the access panels? I have used mine more than once. Without them, the instruments can be quite difficult to reach, only by standing on your head and reaching up, and may require removing the lower units to reach the top ones. Some people are unwilling to use the LASAR conversion due to the lack of instrument access. Quote

Some people are unwilling to use the LASAR conversion due to the lack of instrument access. I have had mine off a few times as well. The amount of access is not very much on an F. Barely enough to get a hand in. The bigger issue is that I have had a few leaks there. Even using good silicones. On top of it, the panels themselves have begun to warp a bit. Just not a lean look over time. Quote

That is the look I am seeking! As you can see from mine, it is not as clean looking. I will read through your conversion to see what else you did. Beautiful looking Mooney. I have decided to upgrade mine as well. I know I will never get the money back out, but I have enjoyed mine for 21 years and it is time... Quote
FloridaMan Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 I wish I had access panels on mine. This is my '67 -- taken some time before I bought it: Quote
AmigOne Posted December 1, 2012 Report Posted December 1, 2012 No disagreement that the 201 w/s is nicer looking and may add a little speed but I do disagree with the statement the the access is barely an F. There is plenty of rom to get your hand in and do all kinds of work, certainly a lot easier than working with your head under the panel, and removing the eat is a pain. My 68C came with a teflon tape to seal the covers and properly tightened I never experienced any water inside, as to warping yes they tend to flatten thus they take a bit of effort to reinstall. My trick, tighten the two bottom screws first. Quote

The metal strips which the panels attaches to cover a full inch around the entire edge. I wonder if there are different ways to install the mod. Trust me, I have had my hand down there trying to make connections to a Davtron and GEM that I installed with an IA. Quote

Simply awesome! Gave me way too many things to think about! Watching some of the transformations were great to follow. Quote

Probably the oil cooler relocation mod and wing tip recognition lights. Probably tackle one of each at the next 2 annuals. Gotta keep my A&P busy somehow... Brian Quote
scottfromiowa Posted December 2, 2012 Report Posted December 2, 2012 Nice. Maybe an extra landing light in cowl. Quote
meddesign Posted December 5, 2012 Report Posted December 5, 2012 the later stock access panel has a groove for surgical tubing seals ....no leaks on mine and very easy access to the instruments. I also have heard anecdotally that the speed increase is somewhat exaggerated (imagined). I also heard that on the SWTA mod that the defroster no longer put the hot air where it was needed. It certainly does look nicer through. Quote
