Does anyone know what the P/N is of the alternator belt used in a vintage Mooney that was upgraded from a generator?

I have a '66 E, the PO had an alternator upgrade done and my prop is being overhauled and I'd like to change the belt out while the prop is off.

I think I heard that the alternator belt is just the same as the one the generator used, but I can't find it in the SMM or PM.

Thanks,

Harley

Aero-In-Stock has them for $51. There are several $20 NAPA (not MAPA) belts in use around my airport.

I was told to pull it off and take it to NAPA for a matchup. That just makes me a bit nervous, I'd sleep better with a $51 one from a air parts place--is there a difference?

You will have to decide what your comfortable with. I doubt lycoming is in the business of making belts. There is an AC that allows using a auto belt on older aircraft. I have one of each. One is ran around the pulleys and the other is tied up as a spare in case it is needed. The NAPA green belt seems to be a common one used. I think it was either a 36.5 or 37.5".

Modern belts don't seem to break like they used too. My 65C had an AC Delco generator and probably Gates belt supplied by my mechanic with proper paperwork. It was common for Mooneys to have an extra belt tied in place in the event it was needed.

In ten years, I never lost a belt. It got swapped out when the prop came off for service. Approximately 1,000 hours in that time as well.

Haven't had any issues with automotive belts on my cars either.

Best regards,

I think I'd sleep better with a good quality NAPA or Gates belt on the plane and as somone else metioned belts today are better than they were 30 years ago. Yes also put a spare on there as well while you have the chance regardless of what belt you use is is cheaper than having to pull the prop to install a new belt.

I haven't heard of this .. but it sounds like a good idea. Do you have a picture of this? What do you tie it to? The pulley, the engine block?
