Not sure how really, but I was able to get a new "plastic" one for free.  I think they said it was $5 or $10 to upgrade.


What I did was to go to the online FAA site and request a new certificate with no SSN.  I had my 10 year old paper one previously.  Just requested a new one with no SSN and they sent me a whole new plastic one.  Cool!


PS - Mine is a Special Edition Copy...it has pictures of Orville & Wilbur Wright on it!  ;-)
